Zines continue to confound me for some reason. As much as I love playing and working with paper and pen, the zine seems like a puzzle I cannot quite figure out.

This is why I am amazed in awe of dear amigas who make beautiful media, like Aaminah:

Announcing the Arrival of Don’t Leave Your Friends Behind #3

3:55 pm By Maegan la Mamita Mala · children|Family|Media|Zines · Comments Off

22 Apr 2010

I love zines and secretly would love to have someone sit me down and walk me through making one (cuz I’m afraid of effing it up). In the meantime I’m happy to promote the zines of others especially if some of my favorite mamis and rwoc on the planet are a part of them, and yes I include myself.

Don’t Leave Your Friends Behind” #3 is the third issue of a zine geared toward the non-parent radical community about how to be an ally to the parent(s) and children in their midst.

We made a PDF to better share it, so you can print, and distribute as you like: ithttp://issuu.com/strongwindsahead/docs/don_tleaveyourfriendsbehindzine3.bw.final

You can download the PDF for free pero you can also get a hard copy for $3. Click on the Don’t Leave Your Friends Behind Blog.

VivirLatino loves independent radical mujer media makers because we are independent radical mujer media makers. A dear amiga to VivirLatino, BFP has just released her second zine, just in time for la primavera : Remembering the Sun.

Written during the time between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox, aka The Most Depressing Time of The Year, this zine was motivated by the reality of instability–the need to hold onto something solid, real, loving–even as there seems to be nothing left in the world but desperate and lonely thoughts. Others have made through this darkest of time, and you and I will too. We are not alone.

The sun does return.

The “regular” zine is paper, the “special edition” features a cloth cover (made of old babybfp jeans–to better allow us to remember those days when our own jean knees were muddied and stained with joy) and a solid inner cover to protect the zine.

The regular zine is 1$ plus cost of 1 stamp (.44 cents–or if you just want to round it–but at least .44 cents) for US and 1.60$ for International.

The “special edition” is going to be sold to the first 11 people who make a donation of more than 5$. Postage 1$ for US and 2$ for International. Once the 11 are gone–they’re gone! So order quickly!!

As always–if you feel like donating more, please do so! All money goes towards woc media making (i.e. the costs of this site, of making zines, etc).

Get yours here! Be inspired. I know BFP inspires me.

Call for Submissions : Next Issue of Nos/Otras

12:28 pm By Maegan La Mala · Arts|Culture|language|Media|Women · Comments Off

11 Jan 2010

Last month I reviewed the Finding Gloria : Finding Nos/otras zine with great pleasure. Now here’s your chance to get in on the action.

From Hermana, Resist:

We are looking for submissions that speak to how Audre Lorde, June Jordan and Gloria Anzaldua-our writers foremothers speak to us, influenced us and continue to guide us. I am stepping off the work that Alexis Pauline Gumbs has done at Letters to Audre and other projects, check out In your Hands, which is a phenomenal premise, listening for guidance from our foremothers.

Send submissions to noemi.mtz@gmail.com. Deadline-lets say August 1st, 2010, for now. Send a bio (will be included in zine if selected), your mailing address (will not be included) and any other stuff you want to plug. Nonfiction, essays, poetry submissions are welcome as well as fotos and artwork- some kick ass artwork for the cover would be awesome. Keep in mind that we bring in black and white. And we are a zine.

Finding Gloria : Nos/otras

8:47 am By Maegan la Mamita Mala · Media|media justice|Texas|Women · 1 Comment

14 Dec 2009

glzinecoverI have been blogging for close to a decade and while doing my own radical women of color media making work have earned a deep respect for fellow rwoc media makers, especially zinesters. Zines still confound me. I can make words, string them into sentences and make them dance to a rhythm on the edge of my lips, but a zine? It is an art I haven’t been able to commit to, even as other amazing mujeres around me have.

This weekend I sat with the comp zine, Finding Gloria: Nos/otras. It was edited by Noemi Martinez and has writings by Elle Gray, Alexis Pauline Gumbs, ire’ne lara silva, Fabiola Sandoval, heather bowlan, noemi martinez and Kamala Platt. Artwork and photos by: Fabiola Sandoval, Celeste De Luna, and Veronica Gomez.

I opened the plain brown envelope as if it were a navidad gift before navidad. Seeing the return address from Noemi, I knew what it was, and I had carried the zine in it’s envelope for a few a few days waiting for a few moments to steal and give the zine the attention it deserved. For days that moment never came, so on my commute to and from tutoring the children of immigrants on the proper use of punctuation, on subway trips above ground and underground, between the mami’hood and the mala’hood, Finding Gloria: Nos/otras found me and each page brought tears to my eyes. The zine, an altar en papel for Gloria Anzaldua, is also an evolution of her legacy. We, the other women, Nos/otras spill stories in pen and ink, draw and photocopy our histories, and paint the future.

My very dear Michigan hermana, brownfemipower, has created a new zine! Modeled on the (re) thinking walking series that bfp and co-collaborator, Jess Hoffman have been working on for the last year or so, the zine is described like this:

PC090001

The first zine hand made by brownfemipower, the editorista of the blog, Flip Flopping Joy. Featuring continued commentary in the manner of (re)thinking walking, this zine grapples with brownfemipower’s place as a survivor, Latina, Chicana, immigrant, sexual, organizing, moving mami.

All that for an amazing $1 plus shipping??? I really think you should head over to bfp’s place and check it out!!! Support media making by Latin@s!
