22 Dec 2008Are we supposed to be stunned by Ms. Aniston’s nakedness? Impressed? First of all, Salmita can kick Ms. Aniston’s ass at any time. Thank you. Second of all–are we as a culture so freaking denied that a *picture* of a naked woman turns us all into bumbling fools that masturbate behind big desks (Matt Lauer, get a damn grip)? It’s a naked chick, my friends. If you haven’t seen one recently, please surf some porn and calm down.
Third, is there some reason why classy pictures of near naked *women of color* are not fawned over to this extreme? I mean, the last ‘fawning’ came in the form of Jessica Alba’s “fat” body being downsized for a post-baby shoot. What kind of fawning in that? Oh, and I guess that JLo got some good press off her ass–but what happened to the rest of her body?
Will women of color ever be “known” for their whole bodies AND their work AND their complete and total sexiness?

13 Oct 2008Sokari at blacklooks led me to this video while I obsessively checked my twitter account. Rosa Clemente speaks at a what I think is a New York University (I’ve watched about 20 minutes in the video so far and nobody has said directly where this speech is at).

29 Sep 2008VL reported here last week about Louisiana State Representative John LaBruzzo’s efforts to create legislation that would pay poor women $1000 to have their tubes tide. At the time, a commenter noticed that many women of color and poor women may actually want the sterilization, to which I replied that it is frustrating that “help” for poor people always comes in the form of sterilization rather than challenges to economic structures (such as $1000 scholarships for school, more jobs, raising the minimum wage, etc).
Women’s Health & Justice Initiative and the New Orleans Women’s Health Clinic (both located in Louisiana) put out talking points to address LaBruzzo’s plans. The address the issue of “consent” in a very important way:

I never buy the American Book Review, but I’m going to make an exception for their latest issue and you should too! The current issue features Women of Color Publishing and contains the words of some blogger/writer hermanas! Just a taste:
“This Instant and This Triumph” an introductory essay that puts the current women of color publishing movement into historical context by Alexis Pauline Gumbs
INCITE: Women of Color Against Violence’s crucial The Revolution Will Not Be Funded reviewed by the strategically fly organizer PAULINA HERNANDEZ!
Girlchild Press’s new anthology Just Like A Girl: A Manifesta reviewed by the most talented and necessary fiction writer of our generation DANIELLE EVANS! (I should note- La Mala is in here too!)
Hermana Resist’s collaborative ‘zine The MAIZ Chronicles reviewed by BROWNFEMIPOWER!

One of the reasons I love VL is because our readers pass us such great info. Yesterday we were informed of a film that impacted me as a Latina mami and mujer. The short film, A Girl Like Me, explores the standards of beauty and the messages that society is sending to black girls. The 7 minute piece directed by Kiri Davis and featured at the last Tribeca Film Festival features interviews with black girls talking honestly about their skin color and hair texture and what they were taught was beautiful compared what they thought themselves to be. While watching children all shades of brown choosing a white baby doll as good and a darker baby doll as bad and identifying with the darker doll was sad and horrifying it wasn’t surprising.
VivirLatino is a daily publication published by Mamita Mala Media, dedicated to featuring all the latest politics, culture, entertainment of interest to the diverse Latin@ diaspora.
