The capital of Argentina, the lovely Buenos Aires, is experiencing an historic winter this year. A wave of extreme cold has hit Argentina, leaving several dead in other parts of the country, but in Buenos Aires, the city received a treat yesterday when the first snowflakes in nearly 90 years fell on the city:
The strange meteorological phenomenon, unseen in BsAs since 1918, is likely to put fear into those who believe that global warming will be the end of us, but in the city Porteños got out and enjoyed the snow.
More photos after the jump.
Why are these gringos so happy? Because Punxsutawney Phil, the Pennsylvania groundhog who either raises or smashes warm weather hopes, didn’t see his shadow this morning.
According to German lore this means that we will have an early spring. The Germans believed that if a hibernating animal cast a shadow Feb. 2 – the Christian holiday of Candlemas – winter would last another six weeks. If no shadow was seen, legend said spring would come early. Since 1886, Phil has seen his shadow 96 times, hasn’t seen it 15 times and there are no records for nine years, according to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club. The last time Phil failed to see his shadow was in 1999.
I hate, and I mean hate, the cold and the winter which is why I heart Punxsutawney Phil.
Does anyone know how to say groundhog in Spanish?
