Mexican celebs: Vote or shut up

jvenegas.jpgWith the Mexican elections just a few weeks away, the campaign to get voters out to the polling places — especially young voters — is heating up. “Tu Rock es votar”, an organization whose mission is to do just that has created a pretty compelling campaign online, on TV, on the radio and in print which relies on the power of celebrities to encourage young people to get out and vote. The tagline: “Si no votas, cállate” (If you don’t vote, shut up). The tagline is the main part of a larger message which says: “We all complain…how many of us vote? If you don’t vote, shut up. On July 2nd, don’t let anyone decide for you”.

Bush even less popular among Latinos

george_w_bush_150f.JPGThought he was unpopular before? Latino approval ratings are down for Bush and his party, according to the non-partisan Latino Coalition:

A poll of U.S. Latino voters finds the immigration reform debate has given the Democratic Party a three to one edge over Republicans.

The poll of 800 Hispanic voters conducted by the nonpartisan Latino Coalition showed the Democratic Party a 50 percent to 17 percent favorite in handling the divisive immigration issue.

The margin was narrower for President George W. Bush, giving Democrats a 45 to 22 percent advantage.

The Washington Post reports the poll shows gains the Republican Party made in the Hispanic voting bloc have largely been eroded by hard-line talk on illegal immigration.

Add to that growing discontent among his base and in-fighting within his party and things aren’t looking too good for Dubya, whose approval ratings are at their lowest, 31%. As if that weren’t bad enough, ratings in Bush-friendly Florida are pretty bad as well: 61% of Floridians disapprove of how Bush is handling his job.

Poor Not Feeling Freddy

ferrer.jpg While Democratic candidate for NYC mayor Freddy Ferrer may be talking up the reality that there are two New Yorks but according to an article in the Village Voice today, those more negatively impacted by that fact aren’t buying what Freddy is selling (and I’m not talking thongs).

NYC youth are hearing his speeches as similar in tone to the lecture they hear from their parents about what they went through “back in the day”. The poor feel that Freddy isn’t tackling their day to day problems including welfare.

With less than a week till Election Day, Freddy doesn’t have much more time to get the poor and city students to hear him on what really matters most to them.
