Around this time two years ago, we began the offline test phase of what would later become VivirLatino.com, a project all of us were excited and passionate about, and which had one clear goal in mind: to help fill the void in Latino online media. That passion hasn’t waned one bit in the past two years, and the biggest part of what keeps us going day after day is you! Today, as we celebrate the milestone of the 2000th post on our blog, we want to say thanks to the thousands of you who read us daily, and support us in other ways as well. We love you guys!
All gushing aside, 2000 posts is A LOT of writing. It seems like if it happened, we wrote about it. We’ve live blogged major (and not so major) events, we’ve covered the Latin Grammies and a Democratic debate, we’ve attended protests and rallies, and we’ve even covered elections coast to coast. And even all that doesn’t even scratch the surface of all the chisme, controversy and polemic we’ve covered, and the debates we’ve engaged in — willingly or unwillingly — as a result of it. Phew!
As we approach our second birthday, October 2nd, we’ll be taking a look back on the stories we’ve covered and where they are today. And if you have any favorite posts or stories you’d like us to revisit, please let us know in the comments section.
¡Viva VL!

Some of you might have noticed (of course you have) that our beloved Mala has been absent lately. Well, she was on a temporary hiatus from blogging to bring you VL’s very first bebé. Wasn’t that nice of her?
La ChileRican #2, Gabriela Paula Paredes Ortiz was born on January 16th at 1:07 pm in NYC, weighing in at an adorable 6 lbs. 12 oz. and measuring a charming 20 inches.
We are happy to have our Mala back and to welcome our first VL baby into the world.
Felicidades to mami, papi, and big sis! And special thanks to El Gossiper for filling in for Mala.

VL East Coast Editor Mamita Mala was a guest on NPR’s Latino USA radio show yesterday talking about the Latino vote in this year’s elections. Mala threw down with a Latina republican who claims that “Latinos are Republicans, they just don’t know it yet” and talked about how many Latino young people disenfranchised by both political parties. Check out the show on the Latino USA website.
If you are listening to the complete show, you can hear Mala after Univision’s Maria Elena Salinas‘ take on Latino voter intimidation. Immediately after the Latino vote segment, you can hear authors Carolina Gonzalez and Seth Kugel talk about their new book, Nueva York: The Complete Guide to Latino Life in the Five Boroughs, which I am totally buying.
And if you’ve never heard it before, Latino USA is a great show. It should be required weekly listening.

28 Aug 2006It’s usually all girl action here at VL but with my partner in crime Jenn taking some well earned time off, we called in the boys, well two very specific males, because it takes two males to take the place of one fabulous Jennifer.
We at VL are excited to welcome guest bloggers Amaury Nora and Marco Fernando Navarro.
