PH2007070502079.jpgJust in case you’ve had your head in a hole over the past few days, we’re updating you on some news that has shaken Los Angeles: mayor Antonio Villaraigosa — the first Latino mayor of L.A. in over 100 years and currently in divorce proceedings — revealed that he has maintained a relationship with a news reporter from the local Telemundo station, Mirthala Salinas(image above). The basics:

On July 3rd, Mayor Villaraigosa admitted, via press conference, that he had a relationship with Salinas:

“I have had a relationship with Ms. Salinas over time. It has evolved, and today I have acknowledged that relationship,” said the mayor, who announced his separation from his wife, Corina, last month.

“I don’t believe that the details of my personal life are relevant to my job as mayor,” he said, speaking to reporters after attending a downtown swearing-in ceremony for school board members.

villaraigosa-inside.jpgHate rears its ugly head again in the immigration debate, with two prominent Latino politicians en la mira of anti-immigrant elements who threaten their lives. LA mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Lt. Governor (California) Cruz Bustamente have both been on the receiving end of threatening correspondence. Governor Schwarzenegger announced this news, but the two Latino politicians are playing down the incidents, according to Reuters:

Villaraigosa, son of a Mexican immigrant, said threats “come with the turf” and has also not increased his security.

“There is nothing to worry about. … You can see by my face that I’m not concerned about that,” Villaraigosa told reporters.

The threats have taken on various forms, with Reuters pointing one out in particular that read “The only good Mexican is dead Mexican”. Not very original, I must say.

matthewsduct.jpgConservatives call him liberal, and liberals are calling him a republican — MSNBC’s Chris Matthews is igniting conversation all over the internet with comments he made in an interview with L.A. mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. It seems Chris has gotten inside the minds of Latino immigrants, and was schooling Villaraigosa — a Mexican American — on Mexicans. Neat.

Media Matters’ Summary:

MSNBC’s Chris Matthews asserted that Spanish-speaking immigrants “sound like … natural Republicans to me.” Matthews also claimed that “everybody knows” that Puerto Rican, Cuban and Mexican immigrants “don’t want a big social democracy” and that “[t]hey want free enterprise and entrepreneurialism,” citing examples of opening a flower shop or “a bodega.”
