Martes Movie Moment : Health Care Reform Racistas!

9:26 am By Maegan la Mamita Mala · Health|Media|Politics|race · Comments Off

Nothing like throwing down fear of the R word as a way to fight health care reform.

It could alternately be argued that those who support the current health care reform plan currently under debate in the Senate are racists, since the current plan limits access for immigrants, both documented and not. I’m just saying.

I’ve written extensively on 287(g) and it’s recent expansion and how it is essentially presented as separate from the immigration reform debate, even by DC orgs and insiders, while clearly laying the groundwork for a Comprehensive Immigration Reform policy that criminalizes Latinos. Amigo Nezua from The Unapologetic Mexican made an amazing little film that breaks down the program and the problems with it. This film is part of a weekly series of videos featured over at la Frontera Times.

Jueves Jams: Gloria Trevi is F-ing Nuts

When I first heard this blast from the past I must admit I was disturbed by the subject matterdid I hear right? Is this really a song about someone ODing on pills and coming back to basically stalk their ex-BF under the guise of “guardian angel”?

Check out that bathtub scene!

It’s so bizarre. And so classic and so 80s, I just had to share in an attempt to lighten up your Thursday afternoon. Hang in there, it’s almost the weekend!

As loyal readers may have noticed, we are becoming more and more addicted to YouTube. My number one fascination lately is reliving some old Rock en español videos by my favorite bands, and digging up some that I never even knew existed.

Yeah, makes one feel a little old to see how dated all of these are, but it brings back great memories of when little old me was pretending to be a Rock en español DJ back in Tejas (don’t laugh). I was terrible, but now with YouTube I can feel more like a VJ for all of you. Rock en tu idioma was a great movement, and there’s nothing like a few nostalic hits to kick the weekend off right. Here are three of my favorites to take you back a few years and get your weekend going, 80s style.

Please leave your video requests in the comments section and we’ll try our best to dig in the crates of YouTube to find your faves, and post them here next Friday.
