In the realm of holiday-related marketing, Valentine’s Day advertising can be the most disturbing. From the annoying yet innocuous “every kiss begins with Kay” jewelry commercial (because women’s love must be purchased with trinkets a la island of Manhattan) to the downright terrifying. I caught this commercial for Vermont Teddy Bears and really couldn’t believe what I was watching…the toolish boyfriend, the ladies’ reactions (:42), the suggestion that these bears will undoubtedly lead to sex…it’s all too much.

What’s your favorite or least favorite Valentine’s Day commercial? And do you know of any that are geared towards men?

Latinos : Do You Do Dia del Amor y Amistad

valentines_day.jpgIn many Latin American countries, today is more than just about buying the most expensive gift for your opposite sex partner (at least that’s what all the commercials on tv are telling me today is about). Valentine’s Day is often translated as Dia del Amor y Amistad : A day about love and friendship. That’s right, so that single people shouldn’t feel bad because they didn’t get crappy candy today or roses that will die really fast (and that probably were imported from Colombia where workers were grossly underpaid). Couples (of all sexual preferences and gender identities) shouldn’t feel obligated to buy each other trite greeting cards or buy blood diamonds. If you’re gonna buy into today at all, do it by saying and extra “te quiero” or doing something nice for your partner, friend, or neighbor. And if you aren’t buying into today. Do something nice for yourself anyway. You deserve it!

So are you “doing” Valentine’s Day? How? If you’re not, why?

Sudor is Sexy

sudor_hombre_3.jpgHombres, stuck on what to get your sweetie for Valentine’s Day? According to a recent study out of the University of California, Berkeley, the sweat off your brow (or anywhere) may get the best results. The study suggests that male sweat acts as an aphrodisiac for women. Blame androstadienone, a pheromone found in male sweat. This chemical, which is sometimes added to perfumes as well, raises women’s levels of cortisol, a hormone related to stress and sexual stimulation.

And sweat is free, unlike chocolates, roses, and diamonds. Pero don’t overdo it. There is a fine line between smelling like a man and just smelling.
