And the Prison Industrial Complex Grows and Grows

Prison.jpgLate last month a report released by the Pew Center reveals what many have already known, that prisons are growing with people of color as the human raw materials for this industry.

The United States, land of the free, home of the brave, now incarcerates more people than any other country on the globe. More than one in every 100 U.S. residents is incarcerated.

The 50 states spent more than $49 billion on corrections last year, up from less than $11 billion 20 years earlier. The rate of increase for prison costs was six times greater than for higher education spending, the report said.

Is there any doubt then what the U.S. thinks of its youth, especially it’s youth of color?

A Sad Anniversary: 6 Years of Guantanamo

story.jpgToday marks 6 years since the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba opened with the introduction of 778 prisoners, with no names, only numbers.

The administration labeled the men imprisoned at Guantánamo “illegal enemy combatants” who were to be held until the “cessation of hostilities” in the “war on terror” — in other words, forever.

While there may very well be people imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay, the fact remains is that little is known about why the people that are there are there. U.S. citizens and the world at large are just to accept the fact that these guys are dangerous and we are to pay no mind to pesky little concepts like due process, human rights, and international law.
