10 Dec 2010In contrast to what happened in the Senate yesterday morning with the DREAM Act, the Senate failed to move to even discuss the repeal of the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT) policy, which forces lgbtq members of the armed forces to serve in the closet or risk losing their position.
Via the Detroit News:
It failed in a 57-40 test vote, falling three votes short of the 60 needed to advance.
GOP senators mostly united in defeating the measure on procedural grounds, insisting that the Senate vote on tax cuts first. Maine Sen. Susan Collins was the only Republican to support moving to debate the bill.
The U.S. Military is so desperate to fill in the blanks that dead soldiers have left, that they are threatening to send high school students to jail if they dare to choose college over boot camp.
The recruiter from the Greenspoint Recruiting Station in Houston was suspended last week after a recording of his threats aired on a local CBS affiliate, KHOU. The recruiter, Sergeant Glenn Marquette, warned 18-year-old Irving Gonzalez that he would be sent to jail if he decided to go to college instead of joining the military, even though Gonzalez had signed a non-binding contract that left him free to change his mind before basic training.

Surprise, surprise (well, ok not really) but it seems like the U.S. Military targets young, poor communities of color to reach their recruitment quotas. In a report released by the American Friends Service Committee, a pacifist organization, in New York City the military recruited from the predominantly African-American and Latino neighborhoods of the South Bronx, Washington Heights, Inwood, central and north Brooklyn, Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, Flushing and Jamaica. In 2004 99 people from Washington Heights and Inwood joined the military. In Jackson Heights, Corona, Woodside, and Elmhurst, 119 people enlisted. Compare this to the 7 individuals who enlisted from the Upper East Side of Manhattan.
