10 Dec 2007Ever wake up a morning after and say to yourself, ” Why the hell did I do that last night?”. That’s what I’m saying to myself this morning after having wasted an hour and a half of my precious life on the Univision Republican debate. Why a waste? Well besides the fact that nothing surprising was said (ok I was a bit surprised at the blatant homophobia). I went into the debate waiting for the obvious racist moment when it hit me. Duh, they know we’re (Latinos) are listening. So in between telling undocumented people to go home they threw in God, compassion, and love. What Latino is going to say no to God, compassion, and love. Hearing all the anti-Chavez, Castro rhetoric, reminded me, that even though the Republicans (minus one) knew we were listening, they also tailored their answers for the Cuban exile community not for me or my kind of Latino. And it seems that much of the Spanish language media didn’t pay the debate any mind, at least not in NYC, where the newspaper front pages are more about our day to day reality, like some kids in Washington Heights who were brutalized by police.
I was also surprised by the constant reference to El Salvador and President Reagan’s intervention there, as if that was the foreign policy model to follow. Were they suggesting that the U.S. should fund opposition parties in Latin America. That the U.S. should support death squads? Oh wait. I think they do that already.
Most Latinos were like my partner, who went into the other room to watch the Mexican soccer final, while I listened to nothing new being said by Republicans, no matter how it was translated.

On to Latin America, everyone in the audience clapped upon mention of the failure of Hugo Chavez’s constitutional reform.
How would you deal with Chavez? Ron Paul was booed when he said that he would talk with Chavez. He said we created the Chavez’s and Castro’s of the world by butting into their affairs. Mitt Romney said that Chavez is no friend of the U.S. but that Chavez isn’t the people of Venezuela and vice-versa. Giuliani agreed with Mitt Romney. Giuliani said that Chavez is acting like a dictator and should be treated as one.

Education: Public school reform should be a priority, how to do that. Thompson said that the responsibility of fixing education needs to be on the local level. McCain said that choice and competition are the key. Poor teachers should be fired and poor schools should be closed. Sounds like he wants to privatize education. Romney said we have a good model already. Teaching children English is a key to success as is testing based on standards. Better teachers should be payed better (merit pay).
Huckabee, how to stop high Latino dropout rate? Huckabee said many kids fail because they are bored. That we need not just math and English but also music and art. Giuliani reminded everyone that he’s a result of Catholic schools (and Jesus is still kicking himself over it I’m sure). Giuliani is using his example to promote school choice.

All candidates said that there was no risk in coming to the Univision debate.
Finally, the English only question. McCain said that English should be the official language and that all who come here should learn English and he will help them. Ron Paul said that bashing bilingualism is wrong but the official language should be English.
Next question: What should happen to over 12 million undocumented people in the U.S. Giuliani said that the illegal immigration needs to stop first. He says we need a virtual and a real wall, a national id. Once we do that then people can get their ids, pay their taxes and if they can’t do that then they should get kicked out. Huckabee agreed with Giuliani on the border issue. Undocumented people need to go back to where they came from and begin the legal process, that is go to the back of the line.
