constructionDespite the fact the Center for Immigration Studies has proven itself to be less than unbiased with it’s ties to hate groups, that hasn’t stopped mainstream news sources from citing them and fanning the flames of anti-immigrant sentiment this time using the Obama stimulus program as it’s jumping off point.

CIS latest rallying cry is that 300,000 undocumented workers will “steal” jobs created under President Obama’s stimulus plan. See how they connect the dots:

CIS asserts that the stimulus bill will create two million new construction jobs based on a 2007 estimate by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) on how many “construction- oriented” jobs are directly created by each $1 billion of “federal highway expenditures. ” Yet “construction- oriented” jobs include technical and management positions for which undocumented immigrants, who tend to be less-skilled, are unlikely to qualify.

CIS then claims that 15% of these two million new construction jobs (roughly 300,000) will go to undocumented workers because an estimated 15% of construction workers were undocumented in 2005-before the economic collapse and before the huge job losses in construction.

See! So if undocumented workers were working in construction before, you know that they will now. Right? Never mind that the stats used are old stats and don’t take into account CIS’s own stats on how undocumented workers are leaving the country. So que? They are all going to run back over the border to take the new jobs?

This build of fear serves one purpose, to stir hate in tough economic times, to distract our vision from why the economy is failing and the why has nothing to do with the undocumented.

robbins.jpgFresh Direct doesn’t have a great relationship with POC communities to begin with. The company that offers NYC buyers the chance to order produce, groceries, and prepared food online and have it all delivered to their door, won’t deliver to most POC ‘hoods. But ever since the company, based in Queens, began it had relied on a largely undocumented Latino labor force. These workers, mostly relegated to working the graveyard shift in a freezing cold warehouse, are barely paid minimum wage and receive no benefits. Those hundreds of workers now are preparing not for the holiday season but to be without jobs ever since the company announced that all employees needed to prove that they were legal residents thanks to an impending Immigration and Customs Enforcement (’ICE’) at the Department of Homeland Security official review.

immigration.jpgLate last year there were a series of immigration raids across the country targeting the meat packing industry. And while in downtown NYC yesterday, NYU Republicans played “find the illegal alien” amidst protests, in Midtown Manhattan the government was seeking out undocumented workers, except they weren’t playing.

In a sweep across 17 states and the District of Columbia, immigration officials descended on popular eateries like Hard Rock Cafe and Planet Hollywood, arrested almost 200 illegal immigrants working for a janitorial company and filed criminal charges against its top three officials.

Immigrants (and those that hire them) are No Longer Safe

maquiladora.jpgAmong the immigrants here in the NYC area, labor raids have never been taken for granted as an article in today’s New York Times suggests. What may be more true, is that those in search of low cost workers, employers and business owners have been taking intervention by Homeland Security for granted, after all they are not the ones being sent back to their home countries, they are not the ones having their families destroyed and there always seems to be an unending flow of more workers to chose from. But now thanks to a new campaign, the focus is on those who hire undocumented workers, slapping them with felony charges that could lead to huge financial penalties and the seizing of assets. The focus of this article of course is not on the workers, but the employers and doesn’t even attempt to touch on the reasons why people want to work here at any cost and why employers hire at low cost.

march.jpg Ok anti-immigrant activists, get your cheer on and start your engines cuz this bit of new should make you all a little happy. Telemundo is reporting that at least 21 Mexican women have been fired from their jobs at Wolvering Packing in Detriot for missing work and participating in a pro-immigration march on March 27. A rep for the company said that the women, some who are undocumented, were told that their pressence was needed at work that day and if they missed work they would be fired.

illegal.jpg When you hear the word “Alien”, do you think little green men from mars or do you think of Mexicans and other Latinos? According to the National Association of Hispanic Journalist (NAHJ), the language being used in the mainstream media to detail the current immigration debate dehumanizes and stereotypes. NAHJ, a 2,300-member organization of reporters, editors and other journalists, is calling the mainstream media out on their use of language and the impact it has in framing the immigration. The NAHJ is giving a historical context for the words being used in the media and offering alternative word choices. Their Resource Guide for Journalists states for example :

While Webster’s first definition of the term “alien” is in accordance with the government’s interpretation, the dictionary also includes other, darker, meanings for the word, such as “a non-terrestrial being,” “strange,” “not belonging to one,” “adverse,” “hostile.” And the Encyclopedia Britannica points out that “in early times, the tendency was to look upon the alien as an enemy and to treat him as a criminal or an outlaw.” It is not surprising then that in 1798, in anticipation of a possible war with France, the U.S. Congress passed the Alien and Sedition Acts, which restricted “aliens” and curtailed press freedoms. By 1800 the laws had been repealed or had expired but they still cast a negative shadow over the word. In modern times, with science-fiction growing in popularity, “alien” has come to mean a creature from outer space, and is considered pejorative by most immigrants.
