7455478a84_skecth_03042008.jpgPlaying on people’s fears is something that the United States is really good at so it’s no wonder that people are playing on the fears of the undocumented to commit crimes against them.

Immigrant communities in the Boston area are in a heightened state of fear as people impersonating law enforcement officials barge into their homes and extort money from them. The Boston Herald documents several reports of this oppression.

This crime is playing on the fears of the undocumented, fear of law enforcement. So great is this fear that when crimes are committed against them, often they won’t report these crimes.

Texas: Immigrants contribute to state, cost local government

ppp.immigration.texas.us.flags.small.jpgThe Texas state comptroller’s office has released a report that will satisfy and disappoint those on both sides of the immigration debate. It seems that in the state of Texas, undocumented immigrants

“have boosted the state’s economy by $17.7 billion and haven’t been a drain on state government.”

The downside? The same report says that they cost local governments $929 million in 2005.

Immigration lends database to local police

fingerprint.gifThe Department of Homeland Security is supplying some local police forces in California with access to a database of fingerprints of immigrants who have been deported back to their countries of origin, in an effort to identify whether individuals are undocumented when they are detained by authorities:

The U.S. government intends to make information available to all local law enforcement agencies in the nation within two years to help catch criminal immigrants, people with ties to terrorist groups, and others who pose a threat.

“We need more people on the ground with information who can act,” said Robert Mocny, acting director of the Home Security visitor-technology program.

Meanwhile, immigrants rights groups like MALDEF worry that this initiative may lead to law enforcement detaining people just to check their legal status.

In Los Angeles County, Bryant said there is no indication officers have arrested people just to check their immigration status. “We’ve got better things to do,” he said.

I can’t help but be reminded of this Houston proposal.

TX_26422.gifLately, we’ve been telling you about towns across the country who are writing discrimination against undocumented immigrants into their local laws. Farmer’s Branch, Texas (a suburb of Dallas) just jumped on that bandwagon by proposing an ordinance to ban “illegal” immigrants from the town by making English the official language, among other measures:

A councilman has given city attorneys drafts of an ordinance that would make English the city’s official language and proposals to fine companies and landlords who do business with illegal immigrants.

Meeting death while looking for a new life

no_human_is_illegal.jpgChasing after a new and better life above the Rio Bravo continues to prove deadly for so many immigrants, not the least of which are often children.

Three days into the journey, a U.S. Border Patrol agent spotted the group of illegal immigrants, and as the agent chased them, the Border Patrol truck hit Cruz-Torralva and his daughter, Lourdes, killing her.

Yuma County sheriff’s detectives determined the death was an accident, but Cruz-Torralva was arrested on charges of endangerment. Deputies argued that he had placed the child in “risk of imminent death” by bringing her into the desert.

Frame2.jpgI never thought of my hometown as a “haven” for the undocumented (much less its suburb Katy, or Austin), but apparently the U.S. government thinks so, and is pressuring Houston officials to change this:

City Councilman Mark Ellis is trying to force a vote on a plan directing police to enforce immigration law and requiring proof of citizenship for people receiving social services. The local effort coincides with a push by President George W. Bush and bills in Congress to crack down on illegal immigration.

“The federal government, they’re not going to be able to get their arms around this issue alone,” Ellis said in a telephone interview. “They’re going to have to have assistance from the local government and state government.”
