Hooray! It’s a landmark moment for Latinos on TV. A show by Latinos, with a Latino cast and a Latino storyline, adapted from a script born in Latin America, has taken the Golden Globe for Best Comedy, with America Ferrera taking home her own for Best Comic Actress on TV.
Betty‘s producer, Silvio Horta, got all teary-eyed (and so did I, I confess) when he said that Ugly Betty was an immigrant story and that Betty herself symbolizes the American dream. The immigrant angle, I think, is what has taken an ordinary Cinderella tale and turned it into something meaningful that so many people can relate to.
While Horta gave his speech, Salma Hayek, the show’s star executive producer stood back, and cast member Vanessa Williams jumped up and down and shouted with glee. Horta ended his speech by sending a shout out to his mom: “Te quiero, mami!”

The cast and crew of the Mexican version of Ugly Betty, Televisa’s La Fea más bella, is mourning the death of their director, actor Sergio Jiménez, who
…died of an apparent heart attack, television producer Rosy Ocampo said Wednesday. He was 69.Jiménez had been working as a director on the TV soap opera “La fea más bella.”
Ocampo, who was in charge of the production, told Televisa that Jiménez´s body was found in his apartment after he did not show up for the show´s Wednesday taping, the first such session scheduled after the holiday season.
“People close to him went to look for him at his apartment and upon noticing that (the door) was locked, that his car was parked outside and that it had been several days since he had gone out, it was decided to go to the district attorney´s office” to notify them of the unusual circumstances, Ocampo said. He also said that prosecutors “finally entered his house and found that he had died, apparently while he was watching television.”
Jiménez is perhaps best known for his role as “El Gato” in the legendary Mexican film Los Caifanes (image above).
Univision.com has a piece on how the Mexican entertainment world is reacting.
Mexican daily La Jornada eulogizes Jimenéz, saying Sergio came from a time when “actors were real actors”.

In an affirmation that telenovelas are truly crossing into the mainstream (as evidenced by the recent success of ABC’s “Ugly Betty”, an adapation of the famed Colombian novela “Betty la fea”), the UK’s most important network, the BBC, is going to do some skanky soaps of their own, in an effort to bump up ratings:
…BBC is investing millions in its own telenovela, working on several ideas with famous screenwriters and has put British playwright Jonathan Harvey in charge of developing the project with the Talkback Thames independent production company. The director of the BBC’s fiction division, Jane Tranter, says that the series will follow the structure of a telenovela.
“We will know how many epidodes it will have from the beginning; a beginning, a twist and plot points, but we will tape each episode a couple of days before broadcasting it.”
According to EFE, the advantage of the Latin American telenovela structure is that is has a definite end date, which helps boost ratings, instead of going on forever until viewers eventually disappear.
If they really want to make a good telenovela, they need to scrap the renowned playwright, take a plane to Mexico and meet with Televisa writers. They know how to write a good novela. They created the formula that doesn’t fail. Why reinvent the wheel?

Tonight is Ugly Betty night on ABC and if the numbers from last week’s premiere of the show, produced by Salma Hayek, were any indication, millions will be tuning in. 16.3 million people tuned to ABC to watch America Ferrera play Betty Suarez. I know I’ll be watching.
Oh and if you wanna dress like Betty Suarez you can start by wearing her signature “B” necklace, available online at ETS Shopping for the low price of $172.

Last night ABC premeired Ugly Betty starring America Ferrera as the fea Betty Suarez. The show, partially produced by la bella Salma Hayek (who makes a guest showing as a gun toting telenovela maid), is a light, fun look at an “ugly” Latina assistant struggling to find her place in the superficial world of a fashion magazine. The show is based on the popular Colombian novela Betty la Fea. This English language version features the fashion capital of the world, New York City, as one of its main characters. Betty is a Queens College graduate and the street on which she lives with her widowed father and single-mother sister looks nearly identical to the Corona, Queens street I spent part of my childhood on (complete with the 7 train passing in the background).

Debuting Thursday, September 28 at 8:00EST, is America’s first response to the moneymaking, country-captivating and saucy Spanish-language novela. Known for keeping your mother, your grandmother, your sisters and your girlfriends glued to the television (sometimes your father, too) if you’re Latino, you learn what a novela is at an early age. (I still remember what Thalia looked like in Marimar and I still remember that Chayanne’s speedo in the opening credits of Volver a Empezar was yellow. I’m not the only one who does. Am I?)
Anyhow, novelas are a very important part of our culture. Whether we watch them or not, novelas are due a great deal of respect for their ability to captivate an entire people. Sure people have their favorite novela-producing countries, i.e. Mexico and Colombia: but Latinos are really concerned with the best cast and the best story. Period. ABC’s Ugly Betty borrowed from the most successful novela ever, Yo Soy Betty La Fea is long overdue.
