There is so much going on, between the DREAM Act, Wikileaks and well everything else in day to day life that I am going to try my best to catch everyone up. I will be stepping away from the computer today and onto the airwaves at about 11:30 am. EST

As part of the buildup for the Digital Diversity Summit I will be participating in this weekend, I will be on Kansas’s NPR affiliate KCUR’s Central Standard with the organizer of the summit, Simran Sethi, Associate Professor of Journalism at the University of Kansas.

Part of the discussion will be on the use of twitter and its applications in communities of color and the upcoming digital diversity summit developed by Prof. Sethi’s  KU students and co-sponsored by UNITY.

I hope you can tune in. You can also follow discussions on Twitter by following the #digitaldiversity hashtag.

What would MLK do with today’s technology?

8:13 pm By la Macha · Uncategorized · Comments Off

Over at Vanity Fair, there is a really brilliant post about how MLK might’ve used today’s technology to organize back when he was alive. Some of the posts are very humorous, like the example I have here–and others are very pointedly sad or ironic. And as the author succinctly notes, MLK would’ve definitely used twitter and other social media (he was a forerunner of the use of television, after all), he would’ve been well aware of the problems as well:

His popular legacy remains one of speeches, but he attended and organized meetings and direct-action campaigns. He put his money (what little he had), his time, and his life where his mouth was. I imagine he would be frustrated by the passivity and false sense of action that Twitter can promote.

Amen to that.

Charges Against Twitter User in Guatemala Dropped

7:35 am By Maegan la Mamita Mala · Guatemala|Twitter · Comments Off

9 Jul 2009

jeanferNearly two months age we wrote about the “tweet heard ’round Guatemala” and how that tweet landed Jeanfer, also known as Jean Anleu, in jail facing charges of inciting financial panic. Well it looks like he’s a free man and that all charges have been dropped.

The situation in Guatemala is getting heavier by the moment with reports of arrests of street vendors and at least one twitter user A little background. Attorney Rodrigo Rosenberg was killed and a video released posthumously points the finger at President Alvaro Colom.

The video’s release has led to widespread protest, calling for President Colom to step down and face justice. The twittersphere in the Central American country also responded. Twitter user “Jeanfer” was arrested for suggesting in a tweet that people who had money deposited in Banrural should remove those funds, and by doing so, break the control that “corrupt people” have over the state-controlled financial institution. The murdered attorney, who was shot to death this past weekend, represented a finance expert, Khalil Musa, who was said to have refused to participate in corrupt transactions involving Banrural.

Angie Zapata was a transgender woman who was brutally murdered in Colorado last year. Next week, her killer goes to trial, and an online campaign by ProgressNow Colorado is encouraging us to remember Angie’s life and death at this difficult time.

Light a Candle for Angie is a Facebook application designed to draw attention to the issue of hate crimes. If you are a Facebook member, why not join the iniative?

If you are a Twitter member, you can follow all of the activities around the online campaign by adding Justice for Angie, or searching #zapata for other online conversations around anti-hate activism in Angie’s name.

It’s refreshing to once again see social media sites being used for something more than just entertainment. These applications’ ability to bring people together also have great potential to harness the power of many to bring much needed attention to serious social issues such as hate crimes, which I hope will eventually bring about policy change.

W.W.J.T? What Would Jesus Tweet?

10:54 am By Maegan la Mamita Mala · Internet|Religion|social networking|Tech|Twitter · Comments Off

thumbnailaspxI’ll be walking the Stations of the Cross in my hood later today pero turns out I can keep my ass in front of the computer and remember the Passion of the Christ.

In a marriage of Christian tradition and digital technology, Wall Street’s Trinity Church is using the micro-blogging service Twitter to perform the story of Jesus Christ.

The main characters will tweet the Passion play for three hours beginning at noon on Good Friday. The feed also can be delivered to mobile devices or e-mail addresses.

The lower Manhattan Episcopal parish also is offering a Web version of the Stations of the Cross.

So is this sacrilege or is it keeping up with the times?

The recent deaths of two family members, explaining twitter to twitless amigos, and a sort of twitter break up have revealed to me the pros and cons of the twitter and how it changes communication.

So yeah this toon made me laugh and reflect. Pero you should all still totally follow us.
