Even groundbreakers adhere to stereotypes

carmen-shane3.jpgShowtime’s lesbian drama “The L Word” has been called groundbreaking in that it’s the first major television show with a plot centered around lesbian characters. The show introduced a Latina character last season (“Carmen”) played by Sarah Shahi. AfterEllen.com goes after the stereotypical portrayal of a Latina in L.A.:

…Carmen explains, “In the Latino culture, it’s okay if two girls dance with each other.”

Her statement, which over-generalizes by using the word “Latino”— there are countless nations and ethnic groups that can be encompassed by that term — drives the scene firmly into stereotypical territory. Indeed, Carmen’s entire family is extremely stereotypical, complete with the over-involved mother who wants nothing more than to feed the overly thin Shane and find her a boyfriend, and a gaggle of gossiping aunties to fix Shane’s hair and coo over Carmen.

per-003861.jpgMen everywhere will rejoice upon the news that the Sofia Vergara wil return to the small screen for their viewing pleasure. You thought you had lost her with the cancellation of her show, Hot Properties, but Sofia’s set to come back (and contrary to her last venture) on a hit show:

Todos tenemos derecho a una segunda oportunidad y aunque con sus Propiedades calientes (Hot Properties) en la televisión estadounidense no pudo lograr el éxito esperado, Sofía Vergara intentará demostrar esta vez que además de su singular belleza, también tiene mucho talento y al parecer ahora formará parte de la serie Desperate Housewives de la cadena ABC.

Will mainstream America embrace novelas?

12:52 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Culture|Entertainment|Marketing|TV · Comments Off

30 Jan 2006

d_NP.jpgIt depends on how “authentic” they are. Will they be as melodramatic as Spanish-language novelas? Will they follow the typical cliché plotlines — repeated time after time for decades — the ones we love so much?

If they do, I think they’ll be a flop with a mainstream audience. TV executives are also pondering these questions as they move into the telenovela realm. Call it “reverse TV crossover” if you will:

“They will be adapted for American sensibilities, perhaps with fewer “heaving bosoms,” she said.

“I’m part Latin, so everything in the Latin culture is — there’s a lot of hyperbole and there’s a lot of melodrama,” Tassler said. “I think we’re going to modify it for our audiences.”

Take away the heaving bosoms and you’ve lost half the appeal.

welmo21.jpgThe fabulous children’s show on PBS, Plaza Sesamo (the Spanish-language version of Sesame Street) just announced its plans for a new season, and it looks pretty cool:

Plaza’s unique Muppet characters, appear in telenovela parodies to positively demonstrate emotions and help children understand them. Also, watch for special celebrity guest appearances from Jorge Campos, Edith Gonzalez, Sebastian Gonzalez “Chamagol,” Andrea Legarreta, Adal Ramones, and Marco Antonio Regil, as they share adventures with the residents of the Plaza and their viewers.

Aquí no se hace pipi

water.jpgI had to laugh at loud at the comprehensive analysis that Univision.com has conducted on the historical absence of bathrooms, bathroom speak, and any reference to using the bathroom in telenovelas — and the baño’s sudden reappearance on the scene. In a very complete (three pages!) article, they analyze the history of the bathroom on Spanish language soaps, and it’s present-day comeback. A tidbit:

blackbrazilchannel.jpg If you watch Brazilian novelas (I sometimes do, you know that usually there is one Afro-Brazilian. Just one. If that character is a woman, she usually is the housekeeper. She usually is hot and earns the attention of a hot light skinned patron. If that character is a man, he is also usually a domestic worker and is also hot. He usually gains the attention of an older white patrona. If said dark skinned character doesn’t live in the big house then they live in the slums. So when TV da Gente, Brazil’s first black owned television station with programming directed at Brazil’s black population, made its debut last November why did people cry “racism”?

sofia_vergara_3.jpgMuch to the dismay of men all over the country, Hot Properties, the sitcom featuring (channeling mainsteam media cliche…done) Latin bombshell Sofia Vergara is officially no more beginning in January:

As for HOT PROPERTIES … Sofia Vergara was hot, but the ABC comedy apparently was cold both creatively and with audiences. It’s put on hold, but we know what that means, don’t we.

Cristina la revista gets the ax

6:06 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Magazines|Marketing|Media · 1 Comment

30 Nov 2005

june_cover_i.jpgCristina Saralegui — the Cuban talk show queen that mainstream media likes to call “the Hispanic Oprah — has been building her niche media empire since the Latino market was just that: a niche. So it seems strange that now, with such a boom in Latino marketing and an increased demand for content to support advertising, her magazine, “Cristina”, is getting the ax:

Still, experts said they were surprised by the decision, given the growth in the market.

Samir Husni, a professor of journalism at the University of Mississippi who tracks the industry, said the magazine should have been able to survive.

“We have not seen the tip of the iceberg yet,” he said. “At any given newsstand, even at the non-Hispanic areas, we have five to 10 titles in Spanish. There’s no saturation yet.”

Eva Longoria: Lalaland’s new tourism ambassador

7:29 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Los Angeles|Marketing · Comments Off

18 Nov 2005

evalongoria1.jpgI thought Eva Longoria was a proud Texican…or at least that’s what she’s always playing up in interviews. I thought she hated Hollywood. Didn’t she say

“I’m just a Texan through and through. I want to move back to Texas as soon as I’m done with the show, whenever that is. You know, I’m never followed by paparazzi in San Antonio.”

But wave some dinero in her face and give her a chance to plug her latest venture and she’ll say this:

“It doesn’t get better than driving down Sunset Boulevard and catching a comedy show like ‘Hot Tamales Live’” she says, referring to the all-female comedy variety show she co-produces at the Comedy Store, located on the Sunset Strip.

Longoria says, “Los Angeles is a great place to live, work and play. I am excited to be part of an effort to promote LA to visitors from around the world.”
