Xuxa had to learn to be sexy

12:47 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Brazil|Celebrities|sex|Women · 1 Comment

29 Sep 2006

xuxa.gifRemember Xuxa? Yeah, that hot little number that all your anglo friends’ moms would turn off when you were watching “a kids show” on “the Spanish channel”. Her legendary sexy kids show has circled the globe, and has even been parodied by The Simpsons. Now, Xuxa’s coming clean about how she learned to be sexy:

Actress and singer Xuxa, who still reigns supreme in the world of children at 43 years of age, revealed in an interview the secrets that made her a sex symbol two decades ago, when she was still a virgin.

A pencil helped make a pretty, innocent blonde with blue eyes, who still slept with a teddy bear into a femme fatale, according to Istoé Gente magazine.

She had never made love but was already considered a sex symbol. How could she show a face of desire if she had never done anything, Xuxa asked herself. Laughing, the “reina de los bajitos” remembers her first sessions as a model and when she got her director instructions from the: “Bite the pencil, Xuxa! Now imagine that the sun is in your eyes. Keep wrinkling your brow, with your eyes almost closed. Now suck on the air. That’s a face of desire!”

Yuck. What I find ironic is that Xuxa started her career as a porn star, in a movie in which she seduces a 13 year old, and someone thought it would be great idea to make her into a kids show idol.

Wisteria Lane goes south

5:49 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Argentina|Colombia|TV|World · 3 Comments

14 Aug 2006

amas_de_casa_250.jpgThe title of this post doesn’t refer to the fact that Desperate Housewives, while a huge hit in its first season, is being snubbed by viewers in its second. It refers to the fact that while American viewers might see the show as a snoozefest, not so the case with viewers in Latin American countries, such as Argentina.

The New York Times reported yesterday that as a result of the show’s success in Latin America (it’s broadcast on the Sony Channel with Spanish subtitles), Latin American producers are purchasing the rights to recreate the show in localized versions for their countries, all to be called “Amas de casa desesperadas”.

Three versions of the series are under way, each tailored to a different area of Latin America. And three additional productions are a possibility, said Mr. Barbosa and executives here, depending on the outcome of discussions with networks in Mexico, Venezuela and Chile. First off the ground is the Argentine version, which will also be shown in neighboring countries including Uruguay and Paraguay and is scheduled to go on the air in six months or so. After that comes a production in Portuguese for Brazil and a second Spanish-language version made for Colombia and Ecuador.

I am skeptical. The most interesting thing about this article to me was the following:

…in the Colombian version of the series, the nouveau riche couple Carlos and Gabrielle Solis will be Ecuadoreans. “They are the ethnic couple on the block, the equivalent of Hispanics in that society,” Mr. Barbosa said.

I’ll hold my tongue, but your thoughts on that are certainly welcome.

“Lost” Latina jailed

6:30 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Justice|TV · Comments Off

26 Apr 2006

Lucia.jpgHit TV show Lost‘s Latina actress Michelle Rodriguez (known to Lost fans as Ana Lucia) got locked up today in Hawaii as a result of an unfortunate borrachera back in November of last year:

Maybe Michelle Rodriguez figured jails in Hawaii are nicer than those on the mainland, or maybe there’s another reason the “Lost” actress took five days in a sunny slammer of Hawaii over community service when a judge found her guilty of drunken driving, according to a recent Reuters report.

Sentenced Wednesday, she went directly to the Oahu Community Correctional Center, where she is expected to serve her sentence. Rodriguez and “Lost” co-star Cynthia Watros — who play castaways from the other side of the island, where a “Lord of the Flies”-like experience left them in worse straits than the rest of the survivors — were arrested in December “on suspicion of driving under the influence.” The bad girls were arrested separately, but within minutes of each other.

The best part? It ain’t the first time…juicy!

Rodriguez has been on the other side of the law, receiving three years probation in 2004 for three traffic offenses in L.A., including hit-and-run and drunken driving.

I always wondered how they got by without alcohol on that island (and without killing Matthew Fox), but apparently they don’t.

Food TV Reality: Latina Eliminada

6:29 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Food|TV · 3 Comments

3 Apr 2006

foodnetwork.jpgTo the horror of some of my friends, I am a Food Network addict. So, it comes as no surprise to them that I am also addicted to their Survivor-like reality show which pits would-be chefs against each other for a spot as the newest Rachael Ray protégé.

The show, as nail-bitingly entertaining as it is insufferable (like all reality TV) is comprised of a variopinto line-up of contestants. Okay, so maybe not so varied: you basically got one black guy and one Latina — a Puerto Rican named Evette — and bunch of white people. Oh, and an Asian girl, but they told her buh-bye in the very first round.

So once upon a time there was an aspiring TV chef named Evette, a Rican working mother from Florida, vying for a place for her traditional “Latino” cooking style among a more mainstream contestants.

JLo Does Dallas

8:14 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Movies · 2 Comments

16 Mar 2006

dallasCastStoria.jpgNope, it’s not the porn movie you’ve been dreaming of. JLo actually is going to do Dallas — the TV show – on the big screen. And she’s gonna play Sue Ellen!

If the latest story to be churned out of the rumour mill is correct, the Latino diva is set to play Sue Ellen Ewing in the big-screen version of Dallas.

A US mag reckons director Robert Luketic is finalising his key cast members with Jen set to join John Travolta, Owen Wilson and Shirley MacLaine.

I totally see JLo more as Pam. And wait, that cast is just…weird. I mean Dallas was pure drama, and that ensemble says comedy (if anything) to me.

Predictable: Travolta will be J.R. Ick. Not so predictable: Owen Wilson is Bobby.

I wonder who will play Miss Ellie and Jock? Or Cliff?

Dude, who cares…this is going to totally suck.

TV Good for la Familia?

TV%20family.jpg That’s right padres de familias, television is good for you and your children at least according to a national survey, conducted for Comcast Corporation by Horowitz Associates, Inc. Yes , you read that correctly, the survey was paid for by the largest cable company and the largest broadband (2nd overall) Internet service provider in the United States. No conflict of interest or ulterior motive here folks! The survey, The Role of On-Demand Services in Household Dynamics , found that among families using video on demand and/or digital recording services:

3% say that they “watch more television as a family.56% believe that the service “helps them reduce the stress they feel
from having to juggle their kids, family and personal schedules.
47% feel that VOD makes it “easier to negotiate with their kids about
doing homework and chores without them complaining about missing their TV shows.

So stay tuned and…..oh man I have to go I’m missing my novela.

Daytime Drama: Laura vs. Laura in Peru

7:30 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Peru|TV · 32 Comments

13 Mar 2006

laurabozzopanorama_g%20copy.jpgI pretty much coughed up my lunch when I saw that Laura León (of Mexican telenovela “Dos Mujeres, un Camino” fame) was hosting a trashy talk show almost identical to Laura Bozzo’s (the only talk show host in the history of TV to broadcast while under house arrest) “Laura”, cumbia and all. What was even more shocking is that Laura (Leon) has up and moved to Lima to do the show.

How does a Mexican telenovela actress conquer the Peruvian daytime talk show market? Will she know what a pollada is?

I remember thinking “Damn, I bet Laura Bozzo is pissed that La Tesorito is biting her style — in her own country!” I guess I’m a psychic (or just too in tune with the thinking of Peruvian talk show abogadas) because I was right. Throw down, ladies!

tvwatching.jpg When I was growing up I would watch novelas with my abuelita, my babysitters, and my mother. It was part of my socialization. We would all talk over dinner about what Juan Pablo did to Guadalupe as if the characters were people we actually knew. Now with Spanish language network Univision for sale, there is concern that as U.S. born Latinos, like me, are growing up, we are no longer tuning in for the “stories”, choosing English language networks with Latino themed shows and leaving our mamis and abuelitas alone watching what Juan Pablo did to Guadalupe.

Latino kids pull on the purse strings

3:36 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Bilingualism|children|Education|language|TV · Comments Off

23 Feb 2006

handymanny.jpgWhy is that television believes children can get down with Spanish while adults cannot? For whatever reason, prime time TV (with rare exceptions like Freddie Prinze‘s “Freddie”) doesn’t want to bother with bilingualism, even though Latinos are a perfect demographic: 600 billion in buying power, median age of 26, average household size of 4 members, yadayadayada…

There’s a huge rise in the use of Spanish and bilingual dialogues in mainstream children’s television programming. We’ve posted before about Dora La Exploradora, but she’s not alone.

Latino character actor dies

1:41 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Entertainment · Comments Off

15 Feb 2006

pedro001.jpgPedro Gonzalez Gonzalez, an early Latino performer in TV and film, died last week in Arizona at the age of 80. Gonzalez Gonzalez was a fixture in John Wayne movies and was often accused of perpetuating negative Latino stereotypes in his performances.

The films with Wayne, among them “The High and the Mighty,” “Rio Bravo” and “Hellfighters,” and guest appearances on such TV series as “Gunsmoke” made Gonzalez Gonzalez one of the most recognizable Mexican-American actors at the time.

Because he often played sterotypical roles, had a heavy accent and frequently served as comic relief, Gonzalez Gonzalez was criticized in later years as perpetuating negative Latino images.

But his grandson said Gonzales Gonzales took what roles were available.
