photoIf you are in NYC on any Monday evening this month, stop by the Nuyorican Poet’s Cafe to see Elaine del Valle’s award winning one-woman show, Brownsville Bred.

The autobiographical show takes the audience through an “emotional rollercoaster” that is uplifting, heartbreaking and powerful as they witness Del Valle recreate life in the tough projects of 1980’s Brownsville, Brooklyn NY. Amongst eight other characters, Del Valle narrates as herself from ages 11 to 17. Del Valle’s loving father, another empathetic character, leaves the family of five as he falls from stature as a talented musician to a defeated heroine addict. Not unlike most impoverished families, Elaine’s mother emerges as the loveable spirit that holds the family together and guides them to a hopeful future. Crime, Drugs and Poverty mix with the Joys of Family, Hope, Salsa and the Birth of Rap, as Del Valle’s innocence recounts a journey to womanhood, a neighborhoods crack & crime epidemic, Salsa rumbas, and her love of Run DMC, which often times help her verbalize a unique struggle and triumph that has audiences cheering and laughing through their tears while swaying to urban rhythms.

teatro ppal.gifThe influence of the Dominican community in New York City cannot be denied. Over half of all Dominicanos in the U.S. live in the state of New York, and the face of New York City has changed as la isla dominicana has come to transplant itself on la isla de Manhattan over the past several decades.

Surprising it is, then, that only now is the first all-Dominicano theatre, Teatro Estudio Internacional, opening its doors in New York City. Not en el barrio, but on Broadway.

I think the fact that the theatre will be based in the heart of the “mainstream” theatre district is a great step towards getting Americans to take a closer look at Latino theatre, and at Dominican theatre in particular, which according to some has never existed as a serious movement in New York the way it should — until now.

The premiere party for the Teatro Estudio Internacional gets started this Thursday, October 20th at 7:00 pm at the Times Square Arts Center (between 8th and 9th Avenues).

Latinologues Hits Broadway

latinologuesLatinologues, a comedy show now on Broadway, is a series of monologues based on a Latino’s experience in the USA.

Though this is its first time on Broadway, Latinologues has been around, with specials on Showtime & HBO. They also have 2 DVD’s available.

I have to admit that I have not seen the show, but I have seen and listened to quotes from their website. Here is a little taste of what to expect. This monologue was given by a character Buford Gomez, Border Patrol, giving a special seminar:

Not every single Latino is Mexican, there’s different kind of Mexicans. There’s Colombian Mexicans, Guatemalan Mexicans…Puerto Ricans are legal Mexicans. Cubans are Mexicans with boats. Argentineans, you are not European, I repeat you are not European.

Written by Rick Najera, directed by Cheech Marin, and performed in English, the show runs through Dec 4.
