tvwatching.jpg When I was growing up I would watch novelas with my abuelita, my babysitters, and my mother. It was part of my socialization. We would all talk over dinner about what Juan Pablo did to Guadalupe as if the characters were people we actually knew. Now with Spanish language network Univision for sale, there is concern that as U.S. born Latinos, like me, are growing up, we are no longer tuning in for the “stories”, choosing English language networks with Latino themed shows and leaving our mamis and abuelitas alone watching what Juan Pablo did to Guadalupe.

Golden Globes: Any Latinos Out There?

altkurec1.jpgI am excited about watching the Golden Globes tonight. I don’t know how it happened, but I went from totally hating awards shows to becoming obsessed with them when I hit 26 years of age. I think this might be an indication of a sharp decline in my social life. Or something.

Anyway, I was curious to know if there were any Latino nominees on the list this year, so I went to the web site. The first name on the list, Maria Bello, seemed promising. After checking the IMDB I find that the actress is actually Polish-Italian.

Starting next week the television tastes of Latinos who watch Spanish language programming will begin to count, at least if you watch Univision.

Nielsen Media Research will include in its national ratings shows aired by Univision Communications Inc. Since 1992 a separate and unequal panel of estimation was used for Spanish language television programming. Telemundo, owned by NBC is expected to also be counted in the Nielson ratings. According to the LA Times:

Among the 18-to-34-year-old crowd, Univision frequently would finish second, behind Fox.

Eptitafios: Not Dead Yet

feat1_267x270_epitafios.jpg The suspense series out of Argentina, Epitafios, finished its run last week on HBO Latino but in case you missed it, HBO Signature , a channel available to most subscribers of HBO, will air the 13 part series in its entirety beginning this Wednesday, December 7, at 9 pm.

The crime drama is the first fictional dramatic series written and filmed in Latin America, by Latin Americans, for the Latin American audience by HBO Latino. The show is best described as falling somewhere between CSI and a telenovela. Personally I feel it was one of the best new shows on television this year with plenty of twists to keep me tuning in regularly. Don’t worry if you don’t speak Spanish. All episodes are subtitled in English. Check your local listings.

sofia_vergara_3.jpgMuch to the dismay of men all over the country, Hot Properties, the sitcom featuring (channeling mainsteam media cliche…done) Latin bombshell Sofia Vergara is officially no more beginning in January:

As for HOT PROPERTIES … Sofia Vergara was hot, but the ABC comedy apparently was cold both creatively and with audiences. It’s put on hold, but we know what that means, don’t we.

410_1.jpg Soon 20 countries in Latin America will be able to say, “There’s the rub” and they won’t be quoting Hamlet. Sí TV, the only U.S. English-language Latino network, will be distributing it’s roundtable relationship show, The Rub subtitled in Spanish and Portuguese, and broadcast it in over 20 countries including Mexico, Central America, South America and the Caribbean.

I occasionally watch Sí TV and don’t think The Rub is the best the channel has to offer, but I think a show that features a multi-racial group of young people talking frankly about relationships, love, and sex could be a hit across Latin America.

Carlson.jpgAs a follow-up to Rebecca’s post on Florida state senator Leslie Miller’s proposal to teach children Spanish in school from grades K-2, I wanted to comment on an exchange I witnessed between Senator Miller and (shiver) Tucker Carlson on the latter’s cable television show which left me despising Carlson even more. Not just because he’s a Republican but because he came off as a childish idiot. In response to Miller’s question of why we shouldn’t start teaching kids Spanish early and let them decide later if they want to continue:

CARLSON: Well, I’ll tell you why. Look, it sounds like you’re open to voluntary solution, which is certainly better than the compulsory one. But there are a lot of things you’d like your kids to know. You know, you’d love to learn them—how to learn to play the xylophone, or the accordion, or speak Esperanto or, you know, learn a lot about Finland.

He’s comparing learning Spanish, regarded by most as second most important language in the world to Esperanto and the xylophone. (He also said “learn them”. Jeez.)

JLo, the reality show producer

2:17 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities| Entertainment| TV · Comments Off

17 Nov 2005

Pt People JLo Full.jpgShe’s been a dancer, an actress and a singer. Now Jenny from the Block is jumping on the reality show bandwagon (and retracing her steps as a fledgling young dancer) to produce a new series which chronicles the struggle for fame for some L.A. area talents:

La serie de televisión aún no tiene título y se centrará en las vidas de diferentes bailarines de Los Angeles (EEUU) que quieren ser famosos.

La trama recuerda los comienzos de López cuando se dio a conocer en el mundo del espectáculo como una de las bailarinas “Fly Girls” de la serie de variedades “In Living Color”, que se emitió en la década de 1990.

Rumor has it that JLo will act as executive producer and that the show will be co-produced by her company, Nuyorican Productions and MTV.

Bye-bye Dave, Hello Carlos

999.jpgComedy Central announced officially today what most of us were already speculating: Carlos Mencia is the network’s new Dave Chappelle. As you may already know, Dave left Comedy Central in quite a spot when, after a much talked about exodus to Africa, he subsequently revelealed that he would not be returning to continue his hit show. Chappelle, the network’s highest paid star and the one with ratings to write home about, needed a replacement. It seems they’ve been grooming Latino Carlos Mencia to be just that:

The network announced Monday that it has renewed the Latino comedian’s series Mind of Mencia for a second 13-episode run beginning next March. As part of the deal, Mencia will perform in a one-hour stand-up special for Comedy Central and will serve as emcee of a tour that will hit venues in some 30 U.S. markets in 2006.
