El Clon, a Brazilian novela dealing with Islam, the role of women and the science of cloning, is going to be redone in Spanish by Telemundo. I watched the dubbed version when it was originally aired in 2002 and loved it! I hope that Telemundo doesn’t ruin it.
The new Spanish version might have some tweaks, according to Ricardo Scalamandre, general director for international business at Globo TV.
“We are producing based on the original format but specifically for an Hispanic audience, and there will be differences,” Scalamandre said. “The original plot was in Rio … now it’s in California. The main characters and the main story remain the same, but it is to be completely customized for the Spanish market.”
Yeah, why don’t I trust Telemundo. They will totally ruin it.

I watched parts of the Premios Billboard de la Musica Latina live on Telemundo (canal 47 here in NYC) last night ( I channel flipped among the awards, Ugly Betty/Grey’s Anatomy, a PBS documentary about NYC history, and a repeat of a Summerstage concert I saw live with Seu George). The pre-show was a one big advertisement with stars walking down a green carpet sponsored by the green bottled beer (that shall remain nameless) and the Target dog was flashed across the screen more than once.
The local coverage here seemed to be dominated by telenovela stars like Gabriela Spanic who spoke out against President Hugo Chavez’s ban on telenovelas saying he’s taking away jobs from Venezuelans. Thankfully they showed male telenovela stars to like the oh so yummy Dame Chocolate star Carlos Ponce who was one of the main presenters of the evening.
As usual the fashion was dominated by women with plunging necklines revealing thousands of dollars worth of implants like la bon bon asesina Ninel Conde who showed more silicone than the FDA should allow in one woman.

Maegan told you earlier this morning about Hugo Chavez‘s landslide presidential win in Venezuela. According to AP, U.S. Spanish-language network Telemundo also wanted to tell you about it, but didn’t manage to, since they were apparently “forced” off the air during the in situ coverage of the elections in Caracas:
Officials identifying themselves as members of a state regulatory agency forced the U.S.-based Spanish-language TV network Telemundo to halt transmission Sunday of its presidential election coverage.“We’re surprised by this,” said Pablo Iacub, a member of Telemundo’s eight-person team, which arrived last week. “We only want to do our work,” he said by telephone.

I confess. I watch Spanish language novelas with all their stereotypes and overacting. I hide my addiction by saying I’m taping the show for my mom, but really watching a novela is like having a secret love affair. It’s dirty, short-lived, and with a predictable ending. Last night, the finale of Telemundo’s Tierra de Pasiones, delivered on all fronts. If you didn’t get to watch the final episode don’t keep reading. There are spoilers ahead.Marcia, the slutty blonde gold-digger dies(or does she?) a fiery, bloody boat crash death and Valeria, played by the heavily siliconed Gabriela Spanic, ends up walking down the aisle in a red dress to marry Francisco, played by the very sexy Saul Lisazo. At the wedding Valeria’s gay son takes his lover’s hand, the most intimate two men are allowed to get on Spanish network television, and seems not to be bothered by the fact that he can’t get married because of his sexual orientation.

Is displaced Peruvian talk show host Laura Bozzo moving to Televisa after being booted from Telemundo? That’s what Marketing y Medios is reporting:
After six years as Telemundo’s leading lady of daytime talk, Laura Bozzo will step away from the NBC Universal-owned network and into daypart programming at competitor Grupo Televisa, according to sources. While not completely unexpected, Bozzo decided last week to stop production of TV talk show Laura en América in July, when her contract expires.
M y M also quoted an expert who said that Laura’s departure may actually be good for Telemundo’s business, as big advertisers had previously refused to run on the network due to the content of Bozzo’s shows.

I’ll admit to being a little bit amargada that I couldn’t be in Miami tonight covering the Latin Billboard Awards live but I’ve tuned into Telemundo anyway to see the promised excitement and well so far am finding the same old same old. Daddy Yankee had his entrance exagerado. RBD was nominated three times in one category and won (oh what a surprise-bring it on RBD fans). Shakira won within the first 10 minutes of the show and looked casual and comfy against the parade of novela protagonistas with over the top gowns and culo baring dancers. There was a well deserved tribute to Rocio Durcal and my favorite performance, given by the Cubano hip hoppers, Orishas. Shakira just took stage singing Hips Don’t Lie with Wycliff Jean. And with that I think I’ll call it a night. I’m sure whatever I miss will be on Cada Día with Maria Antonieta Collins in the morning.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 5 years of polladas, berrinches, lloros and face-slapping drama, Laura Bozzo, the once-incarcerated host of “Laura en América” has been fired, according to El Mundo and EFE:
Peruvian television host Laura Bozzo has been fired by the Telemundo network after a five year working relationship due to “hard to meet expectations”, according to Peruvian press. Bozzo had declared that her contract ended by mutual agreement, but the press claims that Telemundo ended her aggressive talk show due to a decline in viewers and her approaching trial before Peruvian court on charges of corruption. Her talk show, which reached great popularity in Latin America in last few years distinguished itself by showing dramas in the lives of low-income people who, in many cases, accepted money to tell their stories and allowed themselves to be humiliated for money.
Now who will give all of those poor souls their carritos sangüicheros?
I guess la Bozzo had a reason to fear her Mexican counterpart, since, as far as I know, la Señora Leon still has a job. RIP, “Laura en América”, it was fun while it lasted.

I pretty much coughed up my lunch when I saw that Laura León (of Mexican telenovela “Dos Mujeres, un Camino” fame) was hosting a trashy talk show almost identical to Laura Bozzo’s (the only talk show host in the history of TV to broadcast while under house arrest) “Laura”, cumbia and all. What was even more shocking is that Laura (Leon) has up and moved to Lima to do the show.
How does a Mexican telenovela actress conquer the Peruvian daytime talk show market? Will she know what a pollada is?
I remember thinking “Damn, I bet Laura Bozzo is pissed that La Tesorito is biting her style — in her own country!” I guess I’m a psychic (or just too in tune with the thinking of Peruvian talk show abogadas) because I was right. Throw down, ladies!

When I was growing up I would watch novelas with my abuelita, my babysitters, and my mother. It was part of my socialization. We would all talk over dinner about what Juan Pablo did to Guadalupe as if the characters were people we actually knew. Now with Spanish language network Univision for sale, there is concern that as U.S. born Latinos, like me, are growing up, we are no longer tuning in for the “stories”, choosing English language networks with Latino themed shows and leaving our mamis and abuelitas alone watching what Juan Pablo did to Guadalupe.
