Let them pay taxes!

12:30 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Controversia|Politics|race · Comments Off

It’s interesting to see the Republicans struggle through the reasoning behind their losses. It seems to be the common wisdom among Republicans that they simply weren’t “Republican” enough–that they weren’t conservative enough–and thus we have the ass smacking the Democrats gave to them at the polls. I tend to disagree–there’s been nothing ‘liberal’ about the past eight years, after all.

But it’s even more interesting to me to see how hating on Latin@s becomes a strategy of recruitment of Latin@s:

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been paying taxes for decades and I still don’t vote for Republican. And honestly, of all the ‘hispanics’ I know, this little quip would be the one thing that would drive most of them away from the Republican party rather than to it–if there’s one thing those who identify as hispanics are proud of, it’s being law-abiding and paying their taxes.

Virtual Fence on Hold, Physical Fence 400 Million Over Budget

Seems that the government is struggling to get that damn border wall up and in place. Reuters is reporting that for right now, the virtual wall that was planned for the U.S./Mexican border is on hold and the physical wall they are building will need $400 million dollars to complete. But at least we have our priorities in order:

The highest priority is to put out a system of physical fences and barriers that will keep people and vehicles from illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, Jayson Ahern, U.S. Customs and Border Protection deputy commissioner, told the Journal.

My own priorities are not quite so neatly in order, and I tend to feel a bit outraged that my taxes are going towards a virtual mess that is destroying the environment, harming human beings, and not to mention accomplishing next to nothing–I wonder when we can all agree to take legitimate steps towards solving the broken immigration system?

The Tax Man Cometh for Marc Anthony

4:13 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Chismes|Money · Comments Off

12 Apr 2007

marc_anthony.jpgAs we are in the midst of tax season, I must ask this question again: why can’t celebrities pay their taxes?

It seems that JLo’s hubby is joining the ranks of celebs who owe the government megabucks for not paying their taxes, reports Spain’s El Pais:

At least three companies he owns have not paid their taxes correcly and have been told to pay 2.5 million dollars to the state and city of New York. They will also have to pay an additional $180,000 in fines.

The companies involved are Ari Enterprises, which administers the singer’s tours, the record company Bolero Records and Marc Anthony Productions (MAP). In the case of Ari and Bolero, the lack of payment was for the period from 2001 to 2004. Marc Anthony also didn’t pay his personal taxes during that period.

Maradona being investigated by Argentine I.R.S.

0307_de_wr_futbol_argentina.jpgWhile many of us in the U.S. are ramping up to tax time, soccer legend Diego Maradona is dealing with some tax issues of his own. Apparently La mano de Dios is having his records reviewed by Argentine tax authorities, who are requesting records from all of the banks with which he has accounts.

This isn’t the first time Maradona has been in trouble with tax authorities:

In 2006, Italian police stripped the star of two Rolex watches during a visit to Naples, in line with a judicial order requiring payment of a reported 31 million Euros (40 million dollars) worth of back taxes in Italy.

Juan Gabriel, Paquita la del Barrio, Paulina Rubio, and now Maradona. What is it with celebrities not paying their taxes? These people are in the better position to pay their taxes than the rest of us, but they still don’t. Why?

The Tax Man Cometh in Spanish

taxes.gifI like to get my taxes taken care of as soon as I can after the new year, which means I send them to someone else to take care of them. But there really are a wide range of products and services out there on the market that make filing your own taxes a little less scary and some of them even allow you to do your taxes in Spanish.

eSmartTax provides an easy and convenient tool to help Spanish-speaking taxpayers prepare and file their tax returns electronically. And it supports the significant efforts of the IRS, California and other state tax agencies to serve this specific population. Electronic filing of tax returns is quick, accurate and convenient for the taxpayer while it reduces errors and processing costs significantly for the government.

And look you can even do your taxes in my favorite language, Spanglish! I’ve never filed my own taxes, much less done it online but have to admit I’m tempted now.
