…at soccer, that is, on a new Microsoft XBox game. The Mexican futbolista, currently playing for Barcelona, beat supernerd Bill Gates (looking particularly dorky in this picture) 2-1 at an event to promote XBox.

mex_usa3.jpgLast night I was ready with my Mexican beer and food to watch the Mexican national futbol team, under soccer legend (and big mouth)Hugo Sánchez, kick the U.S. team’s behind. Well, that’s not quite how it went down (thankfully I didn’t put money on the game). The U.S. team beat Mexico , 2-0, thanks to Bobby Conrad and Landon Donovan. The game was played to a sold out crowd in the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

Will a hunky Brit hook L.A. Latinos?

4:07 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Culture| Los Angeles| Marketing| Sports · Comments Off

url-1.jpgDavid Beckham: the one soccer player that people who know nothing about soccer can identify. His model good looks and requisite skanky wife have made him more like a Hollywood star than a sports star, and perhaps that’s why his new bazillion-dollar gig is for L.A.’s futbol team, the Galaxy.

While we know that soccer isn’t the biggest sport in mainstream America — far from it — is still much appreciated by Latinos in this country, who shell out big bucks to see Mexican and other Latin American and Spanish teams play stateside. AP reports today on how Latino fans in L.A. are reacting to the multi-million dollar player’s export from Madrid to Los Angeles:

ronaldinho.jpg26 year old Brazilian futbol superestrella Ronaldinho has decided to hang up his soccer cleats. Currentky playing for Barcelona, he says he’s had enough of all the pressure come from the media and has more than enough money to live the rest of his life well. He said:

Lo que hago no lo hago por el dinero. Empecé a jugar al fútbol porque era lo que más me gustaba, soñaba con jugar en Europa.

Some say that Ronaldinho never got over the World Cup loss.

Colo Colo Fans in Chile All Wet

1:06 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Chile| Sports · Comments Off

30 Nov 2006

colocolo.gifI have a confession. Soy Colo Colina, that is a fan of the Chilean Futbol team Colo Colo. This causes some problems between my boyfriend and I, him being a fan of la Universidad de Chile. Colo Colo, named after a Mapuche leader, is the first Chilean team in 13 years to make the regional finals of the Copa Sudamericana. The first leg of this final is going to played tonight against the Mexican team Pachuca in Mexico.

Many Colo Colo fans in Chile who had been waiting for hours to try and snag tickets for the second half of the final to be played in Santiago de Chile on December 13, found themselves ticketless and all wet.

Who is Not Watching the Copa Mundial

12:50 pm By Maegan La Mala · Sports| TV · 1 Comment

28 Jun 2006

goolicon.jpgAccording to a Rasmussen Reports survey (who?), only 6% of Americans are following the World Cup. Now let’s look a little more closely at this report. The term “Americans” is not not defined. Only 1,000 people were polled and it does not indicate the race of nationality of the people polled. Cuz you know that if these pollsters came into any barrio or hood and asked Latinos if we were watching, listening, reading about the Mundial the numbers would be way different. According to this poll what sport do “Americans” like to follow? Football of course or futbol americano as I was taught to say it in Spanish class.

The Copa Mundial Officially Kicks Off

12:19 pm By Maegan La Mala · Events| Sports · Comments Off

9 Jun 2006

mascot2_m.jpgIt’s on! A short time ago the 2006 FIFA World Cup was officially opened. German uber-model Claudia Schiffer and futbol legend Pele opened the Mundial carrying the golden World Cup. This was follwed by a parade of the countries who have won World Cups into the Munich stadium. A catchy musical performance followed featuring German singer Herbert Gronemeyer and African duo Amadou & Mariam.

Now we are officially into the first game of the Copa Mundial with Costa Rica facing the home country team of Germany. Not even 18 minutes into the first half, we have Germany ahead 2-1. Germany scored a golaso within the first three minutes. If what I’m watching now is any indication, this is going to be an amazing Copa Mundial. I need to go grab a beer. This is good.

Keep track of what’s going on with the Copa at the official FIFA World Cup Website.

Dems courting Latinos via “la copa”

2:35 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Marketing| Politics| Sports · Comments Off

8 Jun 2006

mexico_city_azteca1.jpgA group of Democrats are dedicating 2 million big ones to an initiative to get Latinos won over to the party via an ad campaign that will run during the 2006 World Cup, according to AP:

Simon Rosenberg, president of the New Democrat Network, said the group wants to use a “major sport like soccer to brand Democrats for a wider audience.”

The TV ad shows an empty soccer field as an announcer says: “For years now, we’ve been awaiting this moment. Our country is again ready to return to being the great nation that all of us always dreamed of. Get involved. It’s up to you.”

The radio ad will air in 70 markets all over the country.

Personally, while definitely a way to target Latinos en masse, I’m wondering if this campaign will be effective. The World Cup, perhaps more than any other sporting event in the world, is a way to escape, to dream, to imagine and to celebrate the sport as a culture. I think the last thing on people’s minds is the state of the country and how a political party might change that. Caught up in the revelry and emotion, it’s hard to remember that as a nation we’re in crisis.

Thoughts?

A Different Kind of World Cup

2:28 pm By Maegan La Mala · Argentina| Sports · 1 Comment

8 Jun 2006

prisonsoccer.jpgUnless you are living under a rock, you know that the World Cup officially kicks off tommorrow in German. What you might not know is that the Argentine team lost 7-3 to Ivory Coast and was eliminated from the 2006 world football championship. It’s obviously not the Copa Mundial but rather it is a soccer competition taking place in 32 prisons across the province of Buenos Aires in Argentina. The First Inter-prison World Football Championship began last week. According to COA News:

A total of 384 players went through the tough selection process, training and eliminatory matches. Each team adopted the flag of one of the 32 countries taking part in this year’s World Cup. But unlike professional football, the teams are made up of seven players, instead of 11. The games are divided into two 25-minute halves, and the system is simple elimination – which is why Argentina is already out, after the opening match.
