In an interview posted now on Univision.com, Beyonce talks about feeling close to Latina culture, in part thanks to her upbringing in Houston, Texas. She’s trying to do a reverse cross-over and recording in Spanish because she thinks that Spanish is a “sexy” language (and no doubt because she thinks Latino money is sexy too). She admits to being a fan of fellow Texan Selena and Shakira, whom she worked with on the single “Beautiful Liar”.

Shakira was in Santiago de Chile last week to meet with President Michelle Bachelet to discuss child labor in her country as well as in the rest of Latin America. Shakira has made this issue her own in her role as ambassador for UNICEF, as well as being a UN children’s ambassador and the head of Pies Descalzos, her own non-profit organization:
Shakira, who was in Chile to do two concerts, was received by Bachelet in the governmental palace, La Moneda, where the two talked about the protection that all children need.Long before the singer arrived at the palace, outside 300 people congregated and didn’t seem to mind the harsh sun or the temperature which was way above 30 degrees Celcius (86 degrees Fahrenheit).
After meeting with President Bachelet for about half an hour, Shakira made a plea to Chilean parents:
I ask that all Chilean parents send their children to school, that they protect them from vulnerable situations, from child labor and that we all start thinking more about children.”

Is our lovely Shak-attack finally going to tie the knot with her boyfriend, Antonio De la Rua? Rumors have been flying for years, but it seems that controversial (ousted) ex Argentine President Fernando De la Rua — Shaki’s would-be suegro — is hinting that the pair has at least talked about the possibility:
Former President Fernando de la Rua told Listin Diario that the hip-shaking international superstar and his son, Antonio, have talked about marriage and raising a family but have no immediate plans to tie the knot.“They prefer to wait,” de la Rua said. “Kids today would rather live as a couple, they don’t believe that marriage is necessary to be happy.”
Those crazy kids of today. Mr. De La Rua also had some nice things to say about Shakira, calling her a “very good woman” and “a lover of peace“.

Mexico City’s Palacio de los Deportes was the site of the MTV Latin Music Awards last night, which held more than a few surprises for viewers. The biggest: British pop star Robbie Williams showed the world his butt:
Williams, who took home the award for best international pop artist last night, mooned the crowd of around 10,000 people during his performance of his song “Rock DJ.”
Unfortunately, since we don’t have MTV TR3S and therefore weren’t able to see the awards, you’ll have to settle for just a rundown of winners.

6 Oct 2006In a replay of her successes at so many other awards events, VL’s Most Influential Latina 2006, Shakira sweeped Mexico’s “Oye!” Awards, taking home 4 awards and “a special award for social values”, according to Spain’s El Mundo newspaper. She looks pretty darned happy in this photo, via AP.
Pobrecita Julieta Venegas left empty-handed after being nominated in several categories.
In other Shakira news:
Pop diva Shakira will donate the proceeds from a concert in her hometown to build an arts school for 1,800 children forced to flee their homes by Colombia’s civil war.The concert, part of her worldwide Oral Fixation tour, will held Nov. 15 in the Caribbean port city of Barranquilla and is being billed as a festive homecoming for the hip-shaking international superstar who last month was nominated for five Latin Grammy awards.
The school will be called “Pies Descalzos” after the Shakira album of the same name, and her charitable organization.

For all of you out there who are fed up with hearing Hips Don’t Lie, you’ll have to get used to the fact that it ain’t going anywhere anytime soon. That’s because Shakira has been nominated for 6 Latin Grammy awards this year, so you’ll be hearing it in lead up ad nauseum, though it wasn’t nominated (is it because it’s in English?) giving way to La Tortura.
Second in line with the most nominations are several old faves, each with four nods:
Poetic singer/songwriter Ricardo Arjona, Argentine rocker Gustavo Cerati and Mexican pop/alternative chanteusse Julieta Venegas with four nods each. Cerati’s album, “Ahi Vamos,” will compete in the album of the year category against Shakira and Venegas’ “Sal y Limon.”
The awards will air on Univision on November 2nd, and since God knows they won’t give us press credentials, we’ll likely be live-blogging it from our couches.

A little while back Jen wrote about Colombian singer and hip shaker Shakira being called out by Rican salsero Jerry Rivera for using a trumpet rif from his song Amores Como lo Nuestro in her hit song Hips Don’t Lie without his permission. Many of you wrote in defending Shakira and Jerry Rivera, some even saying that the trumpets had been used in other songs. Well someone forgot to send the memo to Jerry because in today’s El Diaro/LA Prensa Jerry is quoted as saying from Peru:
Si Shakira dice que antes había sido utilizado por otro artista, pues que lo demuestre, porque yo no lo sabía. ¡Quiero escucharlo!
So who is gonna send Jerry the MP3?

Colombian rocker Shakira, who is half Lebanese, is speaking out about the war in Lebanon, saying she’d like to see an immediate cease fire:
“It breaks my heart, that we remain silent while this is happening. I hope that my generation will call upon the world to intervene to end this conflict,” Shakira, whose father is from Lebanon, has said. There has to be “immediate” intervention that would lead to a ceasefire, the singer said.
“I am sad, as I believe the rest of the world is, knowing that so many mothers and children are being killed on both sides,” Shakira said.
“We do not need leaders who create dispute, anger and hate but rather leaders who care about the people and their needs,” the rock star was quoted by ‘Ynet’ as saying.
She said that war is “neither the answer nor the solution to any conflict, not today and not in this century”.
It’s nice to hear a big star speak out on a topic of such importance, instead of just standing silently on the sidelines like so many others.
