shakiraclinton_092707_320‘Cause he’s cool like that:

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton donated two million dollars to the school that was built by Shakira’s Pies Descalzos foundation.

Clinton visited the school in Barranquilla on the side of his performance at the IADB summit in Medellín.

The money will be spent on the nutrition of the mostly poor children that attend the school and for a course in how to generate income for the children’s parents.

Clinton received a warm welcome at the IADB Summit, where he urged Latin American bankers to “engage the left”, meaning the people of Venezuela, Bolivia and Ecuador, whom he called “Colombia’s neighbors”.

Shakira

Oprah needs to wake up and pay attention to our lovely Shakira. While Oprah is busy funding her single well-meaning, but ultimately highly problematic school for girls, Shakira is taking on poverty by empowering communities through education. And I think Shakira is doing a much better job of it:

To travel with multi-million-selling pop star Shakira is to travel behind tinted windows, on private planes and on Shakira time – always at least an hour behind schedule and always stopping for autographs and photos. It involves long waits while she has hair and make-up touch-ups before emerging from cars, planes and buildings.

But at the centre of the superstar entourage is a young Colombian who is disarmingly friendly and passionately eloquent about education.

And education was the reason we travelled with Shakira to the north-west border province of Choco, deep in the Colombian jungle. It is remote and poor.

Why is Shakira seemingly easily doing what Oprah is struggling to achieve? They both have highly ambitious noble goals–but Shakira is setting her work within communities. That is, she is empowering entire communities *including girls and women* to better fight their way out of poverty (a near impossible feat especially when a government seems absolutely adamant in doing nothing to help).

Oprah, on the other hand, removed girls from their communities–which is always going to cause problems. Girls are going to miss their families, families are going to miss their girls–and that doesn’t even get into the issue of sexism and misogyny that might influence a parent to come take his/her child back home, get angry at Oprah, or even cause moments of danger within Oprah’s school itself.

When girls (and women) have the resources, knowledge and support to stand up for themselves at home, they generally will. And if they don’t, at least they have the resources, knowledge and support to keep themselves safe in bad situations. When they are stuck in some strange building with some strange girls being led around by some strange woman with a camera–where does the empowerment come from? How brave are grown ups when it comes to standing up for themselves when they have to do it alone, by themselves, and in a strange place?

(on a side note, Shakira is so beautiful without all her makeup!!!)

Shakira Opens Up School in Barranquilla

shakira.jpgShakira, la Colombian singing sensation and humanitarian, just added another another gold star to her already spotless reputation for being a great role model. In her hometown of Barranquilla, Colombia, Shaki has opened up a school which will take in 1,500 underpriveleged children, an initiative of her charitable organization, Fundación Pies Descalzos:

In an interview with Caracol Televisión, Shakira explained that ever since adolescence she wanted to find a way to help children who, in spite of a lack of economic resources, want to study. “I’ve been coming here to the La Playa neighborhood since I was 15. I came with the nuns and my classmates to teach children to read,” said the artist.

Shakira called the opening of the school — built with her own funds and donations from various U.S. and European businesses — “a dream come true”.

So VivirLatino couldn’t attend (as in couldn’t afford) The Latino Inaugural Gala. Pero just in case you were wondering what the famosos who attended are thinking about the soon to be President Obama (that feels nice to write), here you go.

See Shakira after the jump.

340x.jpgSeems like Shakira’s hips my not lie pero they still have given her quite a reputation, at least in the eyes of one Egyptian religious leader who said that she is quite the lady of the noche.

An Egyptian cleric assured that (Shakira) “could be a lovely person. Yet beauty is something relative that cannot be found in the butt or legs of a woman, but in her moral values”…

Khaled Al-Gindi said: “it’s like being a prostitute. In this country we respect moral values ahead of the values of a superficial appearance.”

Pero what if you’re hot and have good real moral values? Certainly Shakira has done her fair share of community work with her Pies Descalzos foundation and ALAS.

shakira_narrowweb__300x450%2C0.jpgColombiana Shakira has announced her endorsement of Barack Obama for U.S. president. Now Shakira can’t vote pero how much you wanna bet she’ll do an Obama song (ay and I hope in Spanish). “I am honored to receive the endorsement of such a talented and generous individual who has achieved worldwide acclaim, and whose commitment to social justice has made such a difference,” Senator Obama said.

“Shakira is a role model for young Latinas in the U.S., and throughout our entire hemisphere, and I am humbled that she recognizes the type of change we need in our country and around the world.”
“I support Barack Obama because I think that he is the person that can bring the world the true American message,” Shakira said. “I feel in my heart that he would be able to reconstruct peace and confidence in the United States.”

Shakira added that: “I’d like to invite the Latino community to come out and make themselves present during this election because they can really make a difference. (ESPECIALLY THE NON-VOTERS!!!!) I care deeply about this country and I think everyone does because America’s economy is so crucial for the rest of the world. The rest of the world’s economy depends on the economy of this country, and world peace depends on the policies of this country.”

Shakira Will Not Sing Song About Islam

Publicist_corrects_Shakira_report.jpg

Turns out that the rumors that Shakira would be singing a song about Islam with Arab singer, Dania Youssef are ‘total fabrications in every respect,’ according to Shakira’s publicist.

I wasn’t really that interested in the rumors that she would be singing a song about Islam–but now I’m interested in knowing why she’s not. And why it’s necessary to make sure we all know that all rumors about said topic are total fabrications in every respect. Is the Latina siren anxious about possibly inspiring a Dunkin’ Donuts, Michelle Malkin led boycott?

Shakira and Colombia’s President Uribe Toast to Peace con Refajo

9:58 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Colombia| history · Comments Off

21 Jul 2008

Ok so no one saw the two actually drinking Colombiana with beer. I was drinking refajo as the President of Colombia and Shakira celebrated Colombian independence and called for an end to the cycle of violence in their country.

Shakira and Uribe are joined by Brazilian President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva and Peruvian President Alan Garcia. Eleven of the hostages that were rescued together with Ingrid Betancourt were also present in Leticia.

The Colombian pop idol called on guerrillas, who still are involved in a war against the government to demobilize and work with the government towards peace.

Later she performed together with fellow Colombian singer Carlos Vives. Hundreds of thousands of people were visiting the border concert.

Ingrid Betancourt and Shakira : BFF

shakira26.jpgRecently rescued from the FARC, former Colombian presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt shows no signs of a promised slowdown as she hangs with fellow Colombiana, Shakira. Apparently Ingrid is using Shaki’s song “Hero” for a political ad aimed at the FARC.

Hey guerrillas, I’m Ingrid Betancourt. I want you to recover your liberty like I have. I’m waiting for you!

ALAS, the non-profit organization dedicated to aiding impoverished communities in Latin America for which Shakira is a spokesperson and advocate, has received a major contribution from some of the world’s richest businessmen:

With the affirmation of “We are going to make history,” Shakira and Miguel Bosé announced on Thursday that the ALAS Foundation will receive a donation of 200 million dollars from businessmen Carlos Slim and Howard Buffett, as well as from wealthy families all over Latin America.

Slim alone is donating 110 million dollars to the cause. The Mexican businessman said he feels a social responsibility towards the less fortunate and said that as a member of ALAS he is using his business experience to help solve social problems.

American Buffett will contribute 85 million dollars. “Poverty has devastating consequences. Those who prefer to live with their eyes closed will see the consequences. ALAS will not allow it” said Miguel Bosé in a press conferenece two days before the massive free concerts that will be held for the cause, which will happen simultaneously in Mexico City and Buenos Aires.

I’m sure the 110 million is no skin off of Slim’s nose, but it’s nice to see this happen. I’ve always found it to be an offensive contradiction that one of the world’s top 5 richest men would be from a country where half the population lives in poverty and one-fifth in extreme poverty.
