I had no idea that vasectomies were illegal in Argentina, until I read that some guy that seriously needs to get one is now petitioning his government for permission to do so:
An Argentine who is 44 years old and has 37 children has asked the courts to allow him to have a vasectomy because he doesn’t want to keep procreating. The case of Cleto Ruiz Diaz has all of the ingredients to attract the media, but it’s gotten more notoriety because the Argentine parliament is close to giving a green light to letting men and women have operations to eliminate their ability to reproduce.
According to Montevideo.com/EFE, the man works as a painter, and doesn’t have the money to buy contraceptives because
he says that “buying a box of condoms would be mean ‘leaving his family without a kilo of sugar’”. He also says he cannot control himself to abstain when he falls in love with a woman, and that he lived for 14 years with three wives under the same roof.

If you’re a regular VL reader you’ll know that we cite Spain’s 20 Minutos newspaper a lot. I think it’s funny how they tend to have the weirdest stories, yet position them as “hard news”. Today is no exception. The headline:
International Sex Study: Spaniards — the longest-lasting and most imaginative, but we do it less frequently.
Hee. Can you tell this is a newspaper they hand out for free at subway stations?
According to the “international study” (which is actually just a survey done by Men’s Health magazine — a PR tactic as it were — in which the data is based on respondents’ answers), Spaniards and Mexicans rank high in sexual prowess. Some highlights:
According to the study, we Spaniards are outstanding at prolonging the length of the sexual act, since our average is 22.3 minutes, the third best after Mexicans and the Dutch who last 22.5 minutes. We are also third in the world in the variety of positions we put into practice in lovemaking, with 4.63, beaten only by the Hungarians, who confess that they change positions 8,27 times, and by Argentines, who try 5.76 positions.
Again, if you ask someone these questions, what are they going to say? I think all this shows is that it’s clear that Spain had a hand in the creation of the Mexican “macho”.

About the naked pictures her ex-husband sold to Penthouse. She also says she wasn’t naked in them (sounds like Foto-Chop!):
“I thought he was a gentleman, but know I see he’s not,” said Pilar, referring to her ex-husband.
“I’m super hurt, those were personal photos. I did them in lingerie, so those naked photos, I’m sure they took my clothes off with the computer.”, said the singer, who also said she did the photos because Jorge himself asked her to, with an American photographer who didn’t know who Pilar was, somewhere in Ft. Lauderdale or West Palm Beach.
Jorge Reynoso, her ex, responds with a very bizarre letter sent to the press in the Dominican Republic, which you can read in its entirety (in Spanish) on the Univision website.

You can’t make this stuff up. A group of nuns from Barcelona, Spain has launched a curious (understatement) campaign to convince women that it doesn’t matter if you like to party, get wasted, make skrills…you can be a nun too! From the site (translated), “Mi vocación”:
“Me a nun? Ha-ha!
You like men, nightclubs and money?
Do you fall in love easily?
Of all the options life has to offer, every young woman should consider, as well, these two options: should I be a gigolá (female gigolo) or a nun?”
Oh my (excuse the expression) God, what?!

I ran across a blog post talking very briefly about a documentary, produced by HBO, supposedly about the sex life of Dominicanos. The post said that it was a “montaje” (fake) and says (translation):
It’s not untrue that there is sexual frenzy in our society, but to me what is presented there seemed staged.
I watched the first part of the video, and I’m not sure what it says about Dominican sexuality (actually, I have some strong feelings about it with no relation to a culture — but I’ll keep those to myself for now), but apparently Dominican talk show host “Nuria” has a few things to say on her show tonight. We’ll stand by for her comments, but in the meantime, the Domincan Tourism secretary has something to add:
“The government’s secretary of tourism rejects the documentary presented by the American television network HBO which promotes the Dominican Republic as a sexual paradise, because the material is sensationalist and totally distorts the social and cultural reality of the Dominican people.”
I’m including a link to the video because I’d like to get our Dominicano readers’ take on what it says, if anything about your culture and your sexuality. Does it stereotype Dominican women? And to all readers: is it offensive?

The airwaves are heating up — at least the Latino airwaves — as multiple Spanish-language radio stations opt for talking about sex in the morning in between traffic and weather reports. The success of one NYC station’s morning programming has even been proved in the ratings — it beat Howard Stern:
DJs and callers discuss dildos, anal sex, group sex and not getting sex. Although no one—not activists, academics or community leaders—can readily agree on what all this raunchy sex talk means for Latinos, everyone is worried. And one thing is for certain: Howard Stern can’t keep up with it. New York’s leading Spanish radio show beat Stern’s blunt sex talk in Arbitron ratings in 2003 and 2004.

Mala reported last week on a new men’s magazine — a “Maxim for Latinos” — called Fuego. Back in November, I applauded the publisher’s decision to serve a market that had been flatly ignored for so long. But in the blink of an eye, the fuego has been extinguished:
Fuego magazine, Harris Publications Inc.’s first foray into the Hispanic marketplace, has folded after less than one year.
A call left late Thursday at Harris was not returned.

From time to time, the most interesting news from Latin America doesn’t reach our shores and I have to lean on my daily dose of European news to find these tantalizing tidbits. A good example of such news is this story (translated from Spanish by yours truly for your reading enjoyment):
A Brazilian adult television channel has launched a marketing campaign to attract subscribers in which it invites customers to imagine erotic scenes of one of their favorite actresses, with the possibility of being able to star in the scene if chosen…”It’s an innovative marketing strategy with a surefire success incentive, sex,” said advertising exec and porn film producer Robson Gonçalves.

So much for the press being tolerant and accepting of celebs peeing on others. Ricky Martin really thought that he would find understanding in the media when he confessed to Blender magazine that he enjoys engaging in “one night stands, porn, golden showers”, as reported by Mala earlier this month. To Ricky’s surprise the press did what they were supposed to do: EAT. IT. UP. Now he’s pee-pee-pissed:
Ricky Martin has struck back at critics who have attacked his ability to run his humanitarian foundation because of controversial statements the pop star made about his sex life in Blender magazine. In a letter in Spanish posted on Univision.com, Ricky said, “At the time I granted the interview never did it cross my mind that my comments would spark this absurd and sensationalist public discussion. I cannot avoid speculation about my career and life, but I cannot allow those for whom my foundation works to be affected because I am a public figure.”

I know we’re already in January but the December issue of Blender magazine and the interview with Ricky Martin inside begs to be written about. While arguably the most famous former Menudo, Ricky Martin has been tight lipped about his sex life and the rumors of what gender (or genders) he likes to share his sex life with. The recent issue of Blender doesn’t reveal Ricky’s sexual preference but it does reveal some other um interesting activities proving that maybe he is indeed livin’ la vida loca. According to the interview he engages in booty calls, one night stands, porn, golden showers, and video taping his sexual encounters. Súbete a Mi Moto indeed!
