Not everyone is a fan of this overly commercial holiday but I say why not have fun with it like Rio Yañez has.

20 Dec 2010I wasn’t able to cover the actions in the Senate this weekend because I was travelling and engaging in some collaborative learning (porque VivirLatino survives/thrives as I do). Pero I have been thinking, spinning the gears in my head y heart and will attempt to get through as much as I can throughout the day, pero that said….this goes out to all the DREAMers, especially ones whom I have met personally and have deeply touched me.
And si I know the video is ridiculously cheesy pero hey

31 Mar 200914 years ago, Tejano music and Mexican American culture lost one of its most beloved artists. Selena was gunned down at the age of 23 outside of a hotel in her hometown of Corpus Christi, Texas 14 years ago today, on March 31st, 1995. Her funeral brought fans from all over the country to Corpus (myself among them) to bid a final farewell to the amazing artist and humanitarian.
14 years later, Selena’s legacy lives on. Her music is unparalleled in the Tejano genre, a genre she proudly represented as much as she proudly represented her Texas-Mexican (a.k.a. Tejano) heritage. There have been many imitators since, but there will never be another Selena.
If you’ve never heard Selena’s music or heard her perform, you’ll get a taste of her at her best in the above clip from her last concert.

While the original artista was a Grammy Award winning Tejano music star, Selena Quintanilla’s tragic murder has stolen the spotlight and has made her a marketable product. First, she was a musical. Now Selena is a postage stamp.
For the first time, the public will be able to purchase, collect, and use the official Selena postage. The 8.5” x 11” commemorative sheet features nine oversized first-class U.S. postage labels, plus a rare Forever in our Hearts label. The release of this postage via Premier Postage fulfills a dream for both family and fans and further underscores Selena’s place as a pop icon.“We are extremely proud of the impact that Selena’s legacy continues to have in the world of music and beyond,” said Abraham Quintanilla, Selena’s father. “This is a tremendous honor to Selena’s memory as well as a celebration of her life.”

I cried when Selena was taken from this world, pero I also think that the cult of the Tejana artista who was murdered in 1995 can go a little too far. The latest incarnation of Selena products is a musical which is set to tour through Mexico and the Southwest U.S. later this year and into next year. The musical was produced in Mexico by Federico González Compeán. Compeán said of the musical with 30 dancers and actors:
Se trata de una historia muy sencilla y simple, popular, que no se plantea contar nada diferente porque sobre Selena Quintanilla (1971-1995) todo está dicho. Lo que sí queríamos era no hacer del asesinato el momento más trascendente, si bien es imposible obviar su relevancia.
My concern is where is all the money that is going to be generated from this musical going to go?
