18 May 2010In case you haven’t heard, my home state, Michigan, is working to implement Arizona’s SB 1070 in Michigan. Thank God, resistance is flowing free since the announcement came. Please spread the word!
May 29: Town Hall Meeting in Detroit
Michigan Is Not the Next Arizona &
“Know Your Rights” Educational MeetingSaturday, May 29th, 1:00 PM
St. Anne’s Church, Parish Hall
1000 St. Anne, DetroitOne week ago, a State Representative announced her intention to bring an Arizona-style anti-immigrant law to Michigan.
We know Michigan is better than this. We know that racism is unacceptable, and legalized racial-profiling is not an option.
But we need to stand up before this awful law gains any more ground. Please attend a town hall meeting against bringing an Arizona-style law to Michigan. We will call on our leaders to publicly oppose legalized discrimination.
ALSO, we will provide important information for the immigrant community regarding your rights. ICE and Border Patrol are targeting our communities with increased deportations. Families need to know how to respond.
Co-sponsored by the MOSES and the Reform Immigration for America – Michigan coalition.

28 Apr 2010Just found this link on facebook. How much more hateful and disheartening can this whole “debate” possibly be?
Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Alpine) says the federal government should deport U.S.-born children of undocumented immigrants.
“Would you support deportation of natural-born American citizens that are the children of illegal aliens,” Hunter was asked. “I would have to, yes,” Hunter said. “… We simply cannot afford what we’re doing right now,” he said. “… It takes more than just walking across the border to become an American citizen. It’s what’s in our souls. …”Hunter made his comments at a “tea party” rally in the San Diego County city of Ramona over the weekend. You can see a video of his remarks below.

28 Apr 2010Resistance to the SB 1070 law is coming fast and furious from many different areas–but this particular article was what I’d most been hoping to see. Local people resisting locally.
Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik tells KGUN9 News that SB 1070, Arizona’s crackdown on illegal immigration, is a “racist law,” and says he has no intention of complying with it. In doing so, Dupnik becomes the first major local law enforcement official to officially rebel against the bill since Governor Jan Brewer signed it into law on Friday.
Dupnik told KGUN9′s Steve Nunez that the law is “disgusting” and “unnecessary.” Dupnik said his deputies plan to keep on doing what they’ve always done. He said when illegal immigrants wind up in his custody, his deputies will detain them for federal agents, but will not take them to the county jail.
Dupnik said he realizes that, under the terms of SB 1070, he could get sued for failing to comply with the law. But he indicated that’s a risk he’s willing to take. Dupnik insisted that federal law supersedes state law.
For those of us who don’t have the resources to participate in the various boycotts of Arizona, supporting local people like this man is a great alternative. You just know that Dupnik is getting hell from all sides right now–participating in polls and doing call in’s/sending emails showing support would probably be greatly appreciated at the moment!

27 Apr 2010Wow. These are eye opening videos. I always knew that Arizona was a scary state for immigrants–but this is pretty horrifying.
What the videos are: The state senator who is the author of the SB 1070 legislation (the legislation that requires racial profiling), has an apparently long historical connection to White Supremacist organizations. These videos show him at rallies where White Supremacist language, flags and signs are on prominent display.

Arizona Governor Brewer is keeping mum on if she will sign SB 1070 or not, only saying that she will do the right thing. The comunidad sure isn’t keeping quiet though. There’s been a strong petition campaign (as well as a call-in campaign) urging Brewer to veto the bill.
On Tuesday, a coalition of organizations including Border Action Network, Presente.org, Alto Arizona!, America’s Voice, Reform Immigration FOR America, United Farm Workers, and the National Council of la Raza delivered more than 50,000 signatures asking the governor to veto SB 1070.
My concern is that despite all the calls, emails, signatures and walk-outs, Brewer may just let the bill become a law by not doing anything.

16 Apr 2010If a lack of an immigration reform bill and perceived back-tracking on the part of lawmakers makes you feel like there is no movement happening when it comes to immigration, I would like to invite you to look at Arizona, which seems to be the lab for a growing enforcement first agenda.
If we want to look at this historically speaking with the state borders of Arizona, this is an expansion of the practices of Sheriff Joe Arpaio and the next step from 287(g), nationally.
SB 1070 makes it a crime to lack proper immigration paperwork and requires police, if they suspect someone is in the country illegally, to determine his or her immigration status. Meaning if you are brown and/or have a Spanish sounding last name be prepared to show your papers, kind of like what Schumer/Graham are proposing with a biometric national id.
