Of course this video is a day late and a dollar short–but I wanted to post it anyway because 1. It’s got good facts in it and 2. I didn’t realize Rosie Perez was still so awesome. The last I had heard, she was regulated to Click the Camera on Diego and other D-list jobs because gawd forbid anybody in Hollywood dare to have an accent.

Rosie Perez’s inspiration for her documentary, Yo Soy Boricua, Pa’que Tu Lo Sepas, may have stemmed from frustration at having to explain her roots, but she sure as hell gave a good explanation. The hour and a half documentary aired last night on the IFC Channel and I was able to watch it, with my immediate Rican family and even gave my 8 year old daughter permission to stay up past her bedtime to watch it. After it was over she turned to me and said, “It’s good to be Puerto Rican”.

Actress Rosie Perez says she got so fed up with trying to explain her cultural background to people that she decided to make a documentary about it, according to Star Pulse:
Rosie Perez was compelled to make her directorial debut a documentary about her roots because she was sick of having to explain her Puerto Rican pride to others. Perez was born and raised in New York but was always taught to take pride in her Latino roots. After realizing how tough American life can be for Puerto Rican ex-patriots she decided to make a movie about her parents’ homeland. And, while making “Yo Soy Boricua, Pa’que Tu Lo Sepas! (I’m Boricua, Just So You Know!),” the actress recalled childhood memories where she was made to feel stupid – because of her background.

Robert DeNiro’s downtown NYC film festival, the Tribeca Film Festival, is in full swing in this, its 6th year. The festival, featuring the best in new film from all over the globe, would be incomplete, especially in NYC, if it didn’t feature the Latina experience. Rican actress and director Rosie Perez has her first documentary film featured at the festival, Yo Soy Boricua, Pa’Que Tu lo Sepas, which looks at the history of Ricans, including her own familia. The feature length documentary is showing April 28th through May 7th at theatres throughout the city.
