What do you get when two Mexican (via Dublin, Ireland) guitarists play their unique flamenco metal acoustic guitar fusion song called “Fuck the USA Visa Department”? You get Rodrigo and Gabriela headlining this past Sunday’s Summerstage concert in Rumsey Playfield, NYC. The concert had a varied mix of people waiting three hours in the July sun on Sunday and it was oh so worth it. Only Rodrigo (Sanchez) and Gabriela (Quintero) could get away with banging time on their guitar a la Espanola in between Metallica and Zeppelin rifs. Gabriela could be seen flashing a rock out sign between songs while Rodrigo led the crowd in three part hand clapping harmony. Rodridgo improvised using a water bottle as a guitar slide to aid him in creating sounds that you wouldn’t believe were coming from a guitar unless you saw it yourself. I’ve been listening to this talented duo since their album was released last October and you should catch up and listen too. It’s with good reason that “Rodrigo y Gabriela,” beat both the Arctic Monkeys AND Johnny Cash to number one in the Irish charts.
