Last month Maegan told us about rumors that legendary Argentine rock band Soda Stereo might be reuniting, to commemorate the ten years that have passed since they split. Well, it looks like the rumor is confirmed. Venezuela’s El Universal reports that Argentine news agency Telam says that sources close to the group say they’ll be making an official announcement any day now.
…the famous trio is already rehearsing and the announcement of their return will be made at a press conference in Buenos Aires “between the 10th and the 15th of this month.”The emblematic band, popular from the mid 80s until their breakup in 1997, “already has 12 concerts booked in Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, Chile, Perú, Ecuador and Argentina, where they will play at the stadium of the soccer team, River Plate, and “perhaps in another city in the interior” of the country.

17 Nov 2006As loyal readers may have noticed, we are becoming more and more addicted to YouTube. My number one fascination lately is reliving some old Rock en español videos by my favorite bands, and digging up some that I never even knew existed.
Yeah, makes one feel a little old to see how dated all of these are, but it brings back great memories of when little old me was pretending to be a Rock en español DJ back in Tejas (don’t laugh). I was terrible, but now with YouTube I can feel more like a VJ for all of you. Rock en tu idioma was a great movement, and there’s nothing like a few nostalic hits to kick the weekend off right. Here are three of my favorites to take you back a few years and get your weekend going, 80s style.
Please leave your video requests in the comments section and we’ll try our best to dig in the crates of YouTube to find your faves, and post them here next Friday.

Proving that mujeres in rock can be strong, sexy and talented while singing in Spanish and not crossing over is 33 year old Mexicana Ely Guerra. At age 15 the Nuevo León native left home to pursue her musical dream in México DF. Since then she has released four full length albums, numerous EP’s and contributed tunes to films such as Amores Perros. Ely can rock out with the best of them, like she does on the track Mas Bonita. She can also sing sing sultry songs like Tu Boca. Both sides of Ely can be heard on her latest release Sweet & Sour, Hot Y Spicy . Ely Guerra isn’t compared to crossover pop Latinas like Shakira but to Alternative vocalists in both English and Spanish like Ani DiFranco and Julieta Venegas.
Rock en Español is still seen as the black sheep of Latino culture. Its use of rhythms native to Latin American countries combined with hard rock drums and guitar riffs defies easy categorization. It also has had the ability to reach audiences across the Latino diaspora. Latino rock can’t be claimed by any one country more than another. It’s unifying that way. The places where fans gather also have that pan-Latino vibe. In New York City one of those places has been la Oveja Negra. Located in the heart of immigrant NYC, Queens, la Oveja has played host to bands from all over the world of el rock including Chileno Joe Vasconcellos , Argentinos Babasonicos, and Libido from Peru. la Oveja also offers up space for up and coming local rockeros to play and network.
But it isn’t all rock paz y amor. As Reggaeton is growing in popularity, its presence in the traditionally all rock venue has been creating some drama and dissatisfaction with management.
Regardless if your scene is rock or reggaeton, la Oveja Negra does have something for everyone, including drinks and dancing.
