Ricky en boykini with a boy

ricky-martin-beach1.jpgUrban legend or gay love story? Univision.com is really going out on a limb today. They are insinuating in a headline (“Un Rickísimo descanso
Ricky Martín vacaciona con un chico”
) that Ricky Martin may be — gasp — gay! The site is featuring some rather old photos that have been floating around the internet for the past couple of weeks in which Ricky seems to be having a ball with another (very hot) man.

¡Mal pensados!

Ricky’s…er…pissed

l_ricky_200x200.jpgSo much for the press being tolerant and accepting of celebs peeing on others. Ricky Martin really thought that he would find understanding in the media when he confessed to Blender magazine that he enjoys engaging in “one night stands, porn, golden showers”, as reported by Mala earlier this month. To Ricky’s surprise the press did what they were supposed to do: EAT. IT. UP. Now he’s pee-pee-pissed:

Ricky Martin has struck back at critics who have attacked his ability to run his humanitarian foundation because of controversial statements the pop star made about his sex life in Blender magazine. In a letter in Spanish posted on Univision.com, Ricky said, “At the time I granted the interview never did it cross my mind that my comments would spark this absurd and sensationalist public discussion. I cannot avoid speculation about my career and life, but I cannot allow those for whom my foundation works to be affected because I am a public figure.”

ricky.jpg I know we’re already in January but the December issue of Blender magazine and the interview with Ricky Martin inside begs to be written about. While arguably the most famous former Menudo, Ricky Martin has been tight lipped about his sex life and the rumors of what gender (or genders) he likes to share his sex life with. The recent issue of Blender doesn’t reveal Ricky’s sexual preference but it does reveal some other um interesting activities proving that maybe he is indeed livin’ la vida loca. According to the interview he engages in booty calls, one night stands, porn, golden showers, and video taping his sexual encounters. Súbete a Mi Moto indeed!

Panty Shoppers and Panty Watchers Love Ricky

3:33 pm By Maegan La Mala · Celebrities|Fashion|Music|TV · Comments Off

2005-1109_ricky.jpg It may have been the best part of Tuesday night’s televised Victoria’s Secret fashion show. Ricky Martin, the former Menudo turned crossover Latino singer, sang a single from his new album Life , titled Drop It On Me while dancers in their underwear surrounded him. The single is a typical Ricky Martin crossover English language song but this time with a reggaeton beat. The only good thing about the performance was that he looked good.

Inglés sin barreras?

1:08 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Bilingualism|Entertainment|Marketing · 1 Comment

Shakira_at_Rockefeller2_035.jpg Is a Latino artist’s career “sin barreras” when they decide to record in English, like Shakira, Ricky Martin, etc. or can they make it big without going crossover and recording only in Spanish? The Boston Globe has a very interesting piece that ponders this very question:

But Leila Cobo, Billboard magazine’s bureau chief for Miami and Latin America, doubts these artists can achieve a high level of success unless they embrace English. ”If you want to do some kind of crossover,” Cobo says, ”usually you do need to have some language connection. Reggaeton is just the big exception to all the rules. And even so, these artists are doing collaborations with people who are singing in English, and that’s going to prove to be their entryway.”

While I personally don’t like to see Latino artists go crossover — I think the lyrics end up suffering and the performances seem forced at times — it has worked for quite a few artists. Paulina Rubio comes to mind. The opposite has happened for Thalia. As much as she tries, with her bigwig producer husband behind her, Engligh-language audiences just don’t warm up to her. Should she care? The Globe goes on:

With more than 41 million Latinos living in this country and an international Latin audience willing to purchase the music, is the crossover audience even important for a Spanish-language artist?”You do need it,” Cobo says. ”If you’re an artist and all you want to do is play concerts, no. But if you’re a label and want to sell albums, yeah. Because Latin America is very, very pirated.”

Apparently the only genre that doesn’t have to worry about what language it produces music in is reggaeton. No one can really understand what they are saying anyway.

Ricky Martin Takes Over Yo Tele

10:00 am By Maegan La Mala · Celebrities|Music|TV · Comments Off

12 Oct 2005

ricky.jpg Ricky Martin is shakin’ his bon bon and whoring his wares all over English language television to promote his new album, Life. He was on Oprah on Monday (thankfully not jumping on chairs a la Tom Cruise). Access Hollywood has dedicated a segment every day this week to the Boricua singer. Today you can expect lots of young girls screaming when he appears on MTV’s TRL at 5 pm (I recommend staying clear of the Times Square, NYC area at this time). And if you haven’t od’ed on Mr. Martin’s rugged new look by then, he will also be livin’ la vida loca on The Today Show Outdoor Concert Series on NBC on Friday, and performing on both Regis & Kelly and the CBS Early Show next week. Check your local listings to get your cup of life, I mean, Ricky fix.

Ricky Doesn’t Care

2:00 pm By Maegan La Mala · Music · Comments Off

4 Oct 2005

ricky.jpg" After a long hiatus from the music scene Ricky Martin is back but is he better? The first track off his Life album to be released worldwide on October 11 is I Don’t Care. Here Ricky sings in English with an urban hip hop/R&B beat. The track features R&B diva Amerie and Bronx Rican rapper Fat Joe. He’s definitely trying to appeal to a young urban audience. Maybe he feels he needs to compete with Daddy Yankee who is actually featured on the album as well?

Ricky also has a new look to go with his crossover sound. His hair is cut, he’s got tats, and he looks like he needs a shave.

Personally the new look and sound doesn’t do a thing for this VivirLatino editor. There’s no doubt the Boricua singer is still beautiful and sexy but come on, he’s no thug. The fact that he has Fat Joe on the new single calling a woman a slut and a ho doesn’t add to Ricky’s street cred. In fact it lessens his credibility, making it seem like he’d do anything to stay on the top of the charts and sell cd’s. Ricky, vuelve with what you do best then I’ll reach into my wallet and buy what you’re selling.
