ricky.jpgNo, really Ricky Martin is officially a king. The Boricua crooner has been named the first ever King of the National Puerto Rican Day Parade.

Madelyn Lugo, President of the National Puerto Rican Parade Committee says, “Throughout its history, the Parade has awarded many personalities the titles of Grand Marshall and Padrino. As we move beyond our fiftieth year of existence, it’s fitting to create a new title to recognize Ricky Martin, an individual who is not only one of the world’s greatest entertainers, but, more importantly, a true humanitarian. Through it all he has always expressed his pride as a Puerto Rican and a Latino. He has served as one of our greatest ambassadors and we can’t think of a better role model to honor as the ‘King of the Parade.”

Ricky Martin, documentarian

ricky-martin-7.jpgRicky Martin is getting on my good side. First, he’s giving Dubya the finger and now he’s planning on making a documentary to bring attention to problem of human trafficking, a cause very dear to him. He announced his plans in Costa Rica last week:

“Until now, the priority of my foundation has been to educate the world about what is happening, putting numbers on the table, and letting the media know that we need help so that the world will realize that this is organizaed crime,” the singer explained.

“Now, my priority, aside from music, is to create a strong, effective documentary. I think that it’s very important that we take this problem to the big screen, to be crude about it, without beating around the bush.”

It doesn’t sound like Ricky will be directing the doc, though he will be helping create the script by looking for the right stories to tell.

Ricky was in Costa Rica for a concert and to launch his new campaign against human trafficking, called Llama y vive, which looks to help victims of this crime via a telephone crisis line.

Ricky Martin: No regrets about “sticking it” to Bush

12:39 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Controversia|Politics · Comments Off

Ricky%2BMartin.jpgWhile I wrote Ricky Martin off for pulling a much too late Dixie Chicks move by giving Dubya the middle finger on a stage in Puerto Rico, the little hip shaker must be commended for standing his ground and not apologizing for this action. Ricky was quoted as saying yesterday:

“My convictions of peace and life go beyond any government and political agenda and as long as I have a voice onstage and offstage, I will always condemn war and those who promulgate it,” Martin said about his action in an e-mail statement sent to The Associated Press via a spokesman.

As proud as we can be of Ricky not backpedaling, I insist that now is the perfect time to gain a little limelight by being critical of this government, when everyone — even Republicans — is turning on this president.

While Ricky’s sexuality remains “ambiguous”, many also question why, pre-war, he would support a president who had already declared himself an enemy of gay rights.

Ricky Martin sticks it to Bush

6:42 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Politics · 9 Comments

13 Feb 2007

Our friends over at Latin Gossip are reporting that Ricky Martin has apparently changed his political stripes: it seems that one of George W. Bush‘s more illustrious Latino supporters is now telling him to stick it:_1126294_martin2300.jpg

During his performance in Puerto Rico, Ricky Martin stuck his middle finger out when he mentioned President Bush’s name. In the song Asignatura Pendiente, there is a line in the lyrics that goes:

“A photo with Bush…”

As he said this, Ricky gave him the F-you treatment and the crowd of 18,000 fans went crazy and cheered.

The irony in all of this is that Ricky was one of the artists to sing for Bush during his inauguration as President.

Ricky%20Martin%20005.jpgWe are what, four days into 2007 and already the Boricua crooner and humanitarian is hard at work. According to a press release sent to my inbox yesterday afternoon, Ricky Martin has the #1 song on the Billboard “Hot Latin Songs”chart. Tu Recuerdo, the first released single from his latest album, MTV Unplugged, has been #1 for three straight weeks now.
Felicidades Ricky! I must say that I am please to see Ricky get back to his musical roots instead of trying to act hardcore and play into the reggaeton craze.

ricky.jpgAy Ricky. How I remember him when he was just an adolescent dancing in unison with other boys, waiting for his facial hair to grow in. Now look at him. Tonight Ricky Martin is being honored as The 2006 Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year. Calle 13, Miguel Bosé, Don Omar,Juan Luis Guerra, Ludacris, Ednita Nazario, Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez and Shakira all are at the Sheraton Hotel & Towers to pay tribute and recognize Ricky’s accomplishments as a world-renowned entertainer, consummate performer and passionate humanitarian (not to mention hottie). Ricky will even perform.

ricky.gifThe Latin Grammy Awards are less than a week away and the announcements about who will be gracing the stage as performers and presenters just keep on coming. Yesterday the The Latin Recording Academy accounced that nominees Ricky Martin and famed tenor Andrea Bocelli will be singing their hearts out at Madison Square Garden. Additional presenters include Calle 13. And in case you all were wondering, La Mala did find a dress for red carpet. Now if I only could find shoes.

18 Aug 2006

ricky_martin_150b.jpgWell, he didn’t make VL’s Most Influential Latino list, but Ricky Martin is getting props anyway. The Latin Recording Academy is honoring Ricky as its “Person of the Year” for being a great “entertainer and humanitarian:

“The 34-year-old Puerto Rican pop star will receive the honor at a dinner and concert in New York City on Nov. 1. A portion of the evening’s proceeds will benefit Martin’s charitable efforts.

“His musical accomplishments are matched by his endeavors as an advocate for the welfare of children around the world,” Latin Recording Academy President Gabriel Abaroa said in a statement Thursday. “It is a great pleasure to honor this man of limitless talent, passion and sense of caring.”

Among other charitable endeavours, Ricky is involved in campaigns to combat internet predators and sex trafficking of children.

2005-1109_ricky.jpgThat Ricky Martin is such a humanitarian. Just last week we reported on how Mr. livin la vida loca was helping to fight internet predators. This week his foundation signed an agreement with the International Organization for Migration to combat sexual exploitation and the trafficking of children. At the agreement signing in Madrid, Spain, Ricky said:

We are committed to ending child exploitation.Unfortunately, more than half of trafficking victims worldwide are children, forced into pornography, prostitution and labor servitude, among other forms of exploitation.

ricky.gifRicky Martin, always the humanitarian (has he said anything about the Rican $$ crisis by the way?):

…taped three educational multimedia videos (each one in English, Spanish and Portuguese). The videos aim to provide minors, parents and teachers useful tools to protect themselves against sexual predators, identity theft, child pornography and violent content, among other risks in the Internet.

This is part of the Boricua entertainer’s role as Goodwill Ambassador to UNICEF. The project is being funded by Ricky’s own foundation and Microsoft Latin America.
