6 Sep 2007Bet you didn’t know that la Mala likes opera (blame my assimilationist papi). Today I am sad for the world’s loss of Luciano Pavarotti, who died at age 71 after struggling with pancreatic cancer. He was one third of the three tenors and had a bad boy reputation after leaving his longtime wife for his much younger secretary. And if you’re wondering what the hell Pavarotti has to do with Latino life, well maybe you should ask Ricky Martin, who sang with the Italian great in 2003.

26 Jul 2007The last time I saw Ricky Martin in concert he wasn’t even legal, was singing as part of Menudo and I wasn’t yet la Mala . Ah but oh how time flies and with his growing outspokenness I was thrilled to see that the second U.S. leg Of his BLACK & WHITE TOUR includes a stop here in NYC. So far his shows have been selling out and I have no doubt that the shows scheduled for NYC, Cali, and Texas will sell out as well. Ricky also will return to his home isla del encanto Puerto Rico on August 10th & 11th to film a concert DVD that is planned for release later this fall. To see the entire lineup of the second part of his tour read after the jump.

First he sang at his inauguration, later he gave him the finger, and now Ricky Martin is back to criticize old friend George W. Bush and his administration:
Puerto Rican singer Ricky Martin has lifted his voice against the U.S. government, accusing it of “mortifying entire populations”. In an interview with Italian newspaper Il Messaggero, the musician says that he can no longer “accept the decisions made by the U.S. administration in silence.”
Just how far Ricky will go in speaking out against the Bush administration remains to be seen. As I’ve said before, it would have been nice to have seen him take this position a very long time ago.

Pop tart Ricky Martin will get a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame next year, along with a list of stars from the TV, film and recording industries. How they fit so many stars on that street each year is a mystery to me. Do they “delete” people after a while? Here’s the complete list of who will be honored in 2008:
Movies: Angela Bassett, Cate Blanchett, Tim Robbins, Stan Lee, the Munchkins (from “The Wizard of Oz”) and the Westmores of Hollywood, a longtime show-business makeup family.Television: Howie Mandel, Susan St. James, Bill Geist, Kate Linder, Howie Mandel, Sherwood Schwartz, Vince McMahon and, posthumously, Brian Keith.
Recording: Brooks & Dunn, Ricky Martin, Christina Aguilera, Red Hot Chili Peppers and, posthumously, George Harrison.
Live theater/performance: Stephen Schwartz.
“The Munchkins”? That one’s been a long time in the making — nearly 70 years. Not very PC either.

Ay if only it were that easy, but if what Azteca America reported on their morning show today is true, you or your favorite hombre can at least dress like Ricky Martin or at least in a clothing line the Boricua superstar is slated to begin.
Hmmm I wonder what the line will be called? Something like “ay que rico” seems perfect to me.

We already know that Ricky Martin is the King of the Puerto Rican Day Parade but another Puerto Rican musical act will also be holding court on Fifth Avenue on June 10th. It’s been confirmed that Daddy Yankee will be on the MTV Tr3s float, spitting some reggaeton and waving to the expected millions of onlookers.

All that shaking, gyrating and kicking seems to have had a negative effect on our beloved Ricky Martin, who threw his back out during a performance and has had to cancel tour dates:
He was told that he needs bedrest and has suspended his tour because of the medical recommendation, until he recovers. At a show in Laredo Friday night, Ricky hurt his back while dancing.
The performace of the Puerto Rican star was planned for last Saturday in El Paso, but has been postponed until further notice.
Is Ricky getting too old for all that prancing about? I wish somebody had a video of this, a la Juan Gabriel’s Humpty dance.

8 May 2007Because that papasito Boricua named Ricky Martin is selling-out arenas across the United States with his “Black & White” tour and his song “Tu Recuerdo” is the #1 song on Latin radio this year, SONY/BMG is honoring him and treating us, the fans, by releasing a Limited Edition Tour Pack. The limited edition collector’s set contains the CD RICKY MARTIN: MTV Unplugged and a DVD of the unplugged session as well.

5 Apr 2007While speculation continues about his own sexual orientation ( I mean really though when you’re that hot does it really matter), Ricky Martin is throwing his support behind other Latino musicians who choose to disclose their sexual preferences, specifically Christian of RBD.
“Life is too short to live closed up, guarding what you say,” said Martin _ whose sexual orientation has been the subject of speculation _ in an interview with The Associated Press. Christian “has to be free in many aspects. I wish him much strength.”
Who ever is sleeping in Ricky’s bed is one lucky person. I mean just look at him move.
