9 Feb 2012It has not been a good year for Latino images on television. Considering that the year hasn’t even completed two full months, this can’t be a good sign.
First, there was the transphobia and tired Rican stereotyping of the now cancelled ABC sitcom Work It. Then there is the not yet cancelled but should be CBS sitcom ¡Rob! centering around a white man’s (played by Rob Schneider) sudden marriage into a Mexican-American family. That family is filled with every Spanish accented caricature possible, weal attempts to counter those portrayals, and plenty of hot blooded innuendo. Two nights ago I watched Glee and the debut episode of The River, and I was reminded why I generally avoid television unless it’s the news and even that pisses me off.

29 Mar 2010(EDITED) La Bianca posted her own thoughts on Ricky coming out right as I did–so there’s sorta a double post–but I’m gonna leave both of them up because both contain different perspectives. What I am going to do, in the interest of cutting down on the post length is edit out Ricky’s coming out message on mine–so if you want to read it, go to Bianca’s post, here!
Well, after years of speculation, it’s finally happened–Ricky Martin has come out. And here I was thinking I was a cynical as they come. His announcement brought me to tears and got me singing.
EDITED OUT
I’m really surprised at the strong reaction this brought up in me. It’s like all the questions and conflicts and fear and even terror I experienced as a kid–worried that somebody would find out what I was *really* thinking about–It’s like all that got washed away today. All the people who told that innocent 10-year-old that only succia white girls were lesbians–just got told. All the asshole macho men I grew up around who treated me like the only I was good for was pussy and cooking just got told. In the sweetest, kindest, most honest and humble way possible. You can be Latino, you can be kind and compassionate to human beings and be motivated by love for your hijos–AND QUEER–all wrapped up in one.
To Ricky–VIVA!
To all the queer Latino kids out there who have never had the words before–here they are: queer, Latino, love.
LOVE!

29 Mar 2010The last time you read about Ricky Martin was when we shared the statement he issued against homophobia. On his own terms, today Ricky Martin has “come out” as a gay Puerto Rican man. Let’s just take a moment to remind ourselves that he is identifying as a gay Puerto Rican man at a time when gay Puerto Rican men get murdered for begin gay, Puerto Rican, and male.
He states on his website (Spanish first then English translation):
Que pasara de ahora en adelante? Quien sabe.
English:
These years in silence and reflection made me stronger and reminded me that acceptance has to come from within and that this kind of truth gives me the power to conquer emotions I didn’t even know existed. What will happen from now on? It doesn’t matter. I can only focus on what’s happening to me in this moment. The word “happiness” takes on a new meaning for me as of today. It has been a very intense process. Every word that I write in this letter is born out of love, acceptance, detachment and real contentment. Writing this is a solid step towards my inner peace and vital part of my evolution.
I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am.

20 Dec 2009Ricky Martin has issued a statement speaking out against homophobia. Author and activist Larry La Fountain-Stokes, author of Queer Ricans, posted this story in English and Spanish. Martin writes:
Well, when we believe in peace, there is simply no room for complacency. The murders of James Byrd, Matthew Shepard, Jorge Steven Lopez, Marcelo Lucero, Luis Ramirez and countless others who were victims of violent “hate crimes” should be completely unacceptable to every human being; because we’re all human beings. It’s up to us to change the paradigm. I hear the world “tolerance” thrown around in the media when it comes to cases like the ones I mentioned above. One of the meanings of tolerance is “the capacity to endure pain or hardship.” Another is “the act of allowing something.” To me, those don’t seem to encompass acceptance, by any definition. So how about this? Instead of saying “we need to tolerate diversity” why not say, “we need to accept diversity.”

More than just some pretty faces, Ricky Martin lent that face and body against human trafficking in a trip to Cambodia last week.
The pop star also held the 3-month-old daughter of a 22-year-old woman who was sold by her father to a brothel and is now HIV-positive. The woman broke down in tears as she urged Martin to keep fighting against human trafficking.“I’m not going to stop,” Martin said, pounding his fist on his knee as he sat on a tiled floor. “All of you are my heroes. You are a gift of my life.”

MTV Unplugged Album, his “Sold-Out” Black & White Tour, induction into The Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the legendary singer’s ongoing charitable work on behalf of children through the Ricky Martin Foundation.
We couldn’t agree more.

Bon-bon shaking bombón Ricky Martin reached a milestone in his career yesterday as he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. By his own account, Mr. Martin was a little nervous:
“I have talked to Congress and the United Nations, but have never been as nervous as I am today,” Martin, 35, told reporters.“With this star my work has been recognized and this star is here forever,” added the singer and former Mexican TV soap opera star who shot to world fame during soccer’s 1998 World Cup with his fast-paced tune “Livin’La Vida Loca.”
Actually, Ricky, if your career dries up, the star won’t be there forever. There’s only so much sidewalk. But we’ll pray that doesn’t happen!
Oh, and someone tell the AFP writer that it wasn’t Livin’ la vida loca but La copa de la vida that he sang for the World Cup. Get your RM tunes straight!
Ohlala blog has some great photos of Ricky’s Walk of Fame ceremony here.
