Republicans Love Immigrants …er Maybe Not

2:16 pm By Maegan la Mamita Mala · Immigration|Politics · Comments Off

2 Apr 2010

Both pre and post the March 21st March for America , there has been a series of meetings between immigration “reform” advocates and politicians about pushing the “reform” agenda forward. The most recent happened just the other day when Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele met with some “reform” advocates.

You know the Republicans have been talking some good game when it comes to courting Latinos, saying that they recognize the power and presence of the Latino vote (something everyone says when there is an election close by). The GOP knows that an issue close to the Latino community is the immigration issue, not because it directly impacts so many of our communities pero because of the ways it ties into other critical issues such as health care and the economy. But the Repubs seem to be a little undecided as to how best love immigrants. After the latest meeting it was reported that said he would push Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and the party’s leadership to enlist another Republican senator’s support for comprehensive and bipartisan immigration reform. Then he said (well a spokesperson said to the NYT) that there was no promise made to do anything.

With GOP Votes, is Sotomayor on her Way?

4:55 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Justice|Politics|race · Comments Off

17 Jul 2009

I know it’s starting to sound like the 24-hour Sotomayor News Channel around here, but we promise we’ll be done with it soon. Here’s at least one note before our heads explode with all the Sonia updates: 3 Republican senators have pledged they will vote for her confirmation. Might Sotomayor be paving an easy street to confirmation? Can we get excited yet? The Miami Herald reports:

Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor picked up her first Republican Senate backers Friday – Sens. Mel Martinez of Florida, Richard Lugar of Indiana and Olympia Snowe of Maine – virtually assuring her of an overwhelming confirmation vote.

Democrats control 60 Senate votes, and some other Republicans could join them when the Senate votes, probably in early August.

In the clip above, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham asks Sotomayor about her “temperament”. Another “hot-blooded Latina” stereotype? Maybe, but The Miami Herald and other sources are saying that Graham is strongly leaning towards voting for her.

I’m actually really surprised that Mel Martinez is voting for her confirmation. I mean, just look at his positions on common hot button topics. I guess this might be taken as further testimony to the fact that Sotomayor is no “activist liberal judge”. But some (perhaps Fox News?) will undoubtedly whine that it’s about Latino favoritism. Like Mel Martinez and Sonia Sotomayor have anything in common aside from a Spanish surname.

What do you think? Is Sotomayor out of the woods yet?

After the jump, some fun and lightheartedness with regard to how literally Sotomayor’s soundbite about being a “wise Latina” has been taken…and what she’s still up against.

Racist Right Doesn’t Know How to Spell

6:15 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Controversia|Funny|language|Politics|race · Comments Off

…in English. From Think Progress, this is hilarious.

buchanan

These fools were at a “conferenece” (!) arguing for English Only, spelling the word “conference” como el culo and using Sonia Sotomayor as the central figure for their ignorant rhetoric:

PAT BUCHANAN: Judge Sotomayor is up there at school in New York, she gets a scholarship to Princeton, she’s graduated with all these big honors and awards they said she never won. What’s she doing there in the summer? They said her adviser told her to read children’s classics so she can learn English better. How do you graduate number one in Princeton if you’re in the summer and you’re reading Rumpelstiltskin and Snow White? [laughter] [...]

Yeah…”so she can learn English better”… What tense are we speaking in? Nice grammar on you, too, Pat!

That’s a segue into a delusional rant about how Obama is out to make everyone speak Spanish:

PETER BRIMELOW: I really do recommend the language issue because you know that polls better than immigration and affirmative action. Eighty-five percent of Americans say they would favor official language policy. The wonderful thing about this issue if you look at what’s going to actually happen here is you’re going to find that the Obama administration is going to gradually institute institutional bilingualism in the country. It’s going to be required to speak Spanish in key positions, the police force and so on. This is a direct attack on the American working class because they are not going to be bilingual.

Right. Because Obama himself speaks Spanish so well.

WHAT. THE. F***?!

This is what we call in Spanish patadas de ahogado. The Republicans are giving up the ghost.

Bad news for the Republican Party. Long-time GOP senator Arlen Specter let President Obama know this morning that he is switching parties and becoming a Democrat, citing that he “no longer feels comfortable” with his party. CNN broke the story about an hour ago (video above), and reports that some of the Senator’s Pennsylvania constituents were to meet him this morning when the news leaked, at which point Specter emerged from his office amid roaring applause from them. The UK’s Guardian has more:

“I now find my political philosophy more in line with Democrats than Republicans,” Specter said in a statement posted on a website devoted to Pennsylvania politics and confirmed by his office. Several Senate officials said a formal announcement could come later today or tomorrow. [...]

“I am unwilling to have my twenty-nine year Senate record judged by the Pennsylvania Republican primary electorate,” he said in the statement.

“I don’t have to say anything to them. They’ve said it to me,” Specter said, when asked in a Capitol corridor about abandoning the conservatives.

The Guardian reports that President Obama contacted Specter by phone shortly after to say he was “thrilled to have” him and give him his “full support” (more coverage from MSNBC after the jump).

CNN just reported that Republican Senator for Maine Olympia Snowe was quoted as saying that Specter’s switch is “devastating” for the GOP and symptomatic of the dominance of the extreme right within the party.

Specter had been a Republican since 1966.

Poll: Conservatives don’t read books

3:23 pm By Maegan La Mala · Books|Culture|Politics · Comments Off

21 Aug 2007

stack_books.gifWhile we know that conservatives do read — as evidenced by the hundreds of comments we get from them here on VL — a recent poll shows that they aren’t exactly devouring books.

The AP-Ipsos poll found 22 percent of liberals and moderates said they had not read a book within the past year, compared with 34 percent of conservatives.

Among those who had read at least one book, liberals typically read nine books in the year, with half reading more than that and half less. Conservatives typically read eight, moderates five.

By slightly wider margins, Democrats tended to read more books than Republicans and independents. There were no differences by political party in the percentage of those who said they had not read at least one book.

Republicans diss Latino officials

5:50 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Controversia|Miami|Politics · 1 Comment

29 Jun 2007

Elephant.jpgWhile Democratic hopefuls for the 2008 presidential campaign will participate in a candidate forum hosted by the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) in Orlando, Florida tomorrow, the GOP candidates – with the exception of one — decided to skip the event all together. ABC News reports:

Friday’s Republican forum? Canceled. Only Rep. Duncan Hunter of California agreed to show. The other candidates cited scheduling conflicts, including a Saturday debate in Iowa, which Hunter also planned to attend.

“The Republican candidates have blown off Hispanics in Florida,” said state Rep. Juan Zapata, a Republican who helped bring the NALEO event to the state.

They didn’t just blow off Latinos in Florida. This shows a disregard for Latino voters in general. And what’s interesting is that if there were ever a place where Republicans might find an easy Latino audience, Florida would be it. Perhaps for that reason they think their time is better spent courting Latinos in non-stronghold states?

It will be interesting to hear what happens at NALEO tomorrow with the Democrats, and we’ll keep you posted.

hate_mail1.jpgGreetings from the great state of California, where some members of a certain infamous county’s GOP think it’s okay to threaten people over mail and scare them away from the polls. They aren’t getting away with it, though.

It seems that a Vietnamese immigrant running for Congress (check out the awesome photo of him after the jump, courtesy of his website) on the Republican ticket in Orange County thought that sending anti-immigrant hate mail to Latino voters would be a productive way to sway the polls his way:

State investigators have linked a Republican campaign to letters sent to thousands of Orange County Hispanics warning them they could go to jail or be deported if they vote next month, a spokesman for the attorney general said.

“We have identified where we believe the mailing list was obtained,” said Nathan Barankin, spokesman for Attorney General Bill Lockyer.
