rbd22.jpgSeriously, people are taking the RBD thing too far. It was bad enough they had to exist in the first place, make a bad novela and market products with the novela. We thought it was over, but like a bad horror movie, RBD refuses to die! There was already one world wide RBD march, in an attempt to save the band, pero ahora there has been a call for a second RBD world wide march to take place on October 4th.

Put us or this “band” out of misery.

rbd2.jpgBecause apparently, there aren’t enough issues for young people in the world today to be passionate about and hit the streets over, at least one member of the Mexican pop group, RBD, that announced its breakup, is going down with a fight. Anahi wrote to her fans:

Quiero pedirle a todos los fans que por favor no nos dejen solos. Estoy bien loca, porque en el foro de la página oficial ya les dije que hagamos una marcha mundial y me regañaron, que por qué ando haciendo cosas así.

RBD’s Christian Comes Out of the Closet

christian.jpgI’ll admit that I’ve been quite critical of the Mexican pop-tart group RBD, their music and their marketing but my mouth dropped open this morning at reading this news:

Christian Chavez, 23, of Mexican pop group RBD, announced Thursday on the group’s Web site, www.grupo-rbd.com, that he is gay. He says the recent release of compromising photos of him pushed him to come out. He wrote: “Although I’m scared and filled with uncertainty, I know that I can rely on the support of my fans, their love is bigger than all of this. I ask them from the bottom of my heart not to judge me for being honest and to feel proud of who they are and never make the same mistake I did.”

I have to give Christian props for coming out, regardless of the circumstances. What remains to be seen is how fans and parents of fans will react to the news. Will there be a RBD homophobic backlash?

rbd.jpgAs if RBD hasn’t contributed enough with a novela and singing in two languages now they are pushing plastic versions of themselves on our children. Mattel, the makers of Barbie, are unveiling the Barbie(R) RBD/Rebelde dolls at this year’s New York Toy Fair. The first dolls will be of Mia, Roberta and Lupita dressed in their school girl uniform consisting of a red blazer, tie, and tiered denim skirt.

RBD : Those Diablitos!

grupo-rbd.jpgI told you all RBD was evil and now the vice-president of their Chilean fan club has proven it. According to Latina, Francisca Fabia says if you play backwards two songs off RBD’s latest album you too can hear “Satanic messages”.

Fabia claims the song “Rebelde” contains the lyrics, Ven y abrázame, demonio (”come and hug me, demon”), and that “Sálvame” says, El malo me lleva (”the bad one is taking me”).

Mira if you’re like me, listening to RBD is bad enough (to say nothing about watching the novela) so listening to their songs backwards has gotta be like a trip to hell and back. But seriously do young people in Chile need more activities in their life or que?

grupo-rbd.jpgIt’s nothing personal. I just really dislike bubble gum pop music in any language, especially when it’s not just a band but a television show and a concert and a magazine. I should have seen it coming. The warning signs were all there, like when I was at a party on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and this guy from Israel was singing RBD songs. But there is a whole new level of cred that comes with making it in the New York Times and that day has come. According to the Times:

RBD (known by the Spanish pronounciation, “erre beh deh”), a photogenic Mexican sextet that started out as a soap opera spin-off but now rules the world of Latin pop with feel-good teen anthems and Las Vegas-style concert productions. Yet the group remains all but unknown among English speakers, a problem its members are hoping to solve by recording their first English-language album. Due this fall, the album is being aimed at non-Latinos in the United States, as well as markets in Canada and even Asia.

I can barely handle them in Spanish. Now I have to look forward to them in English?
