2-day event beginning Saturday April 21-22, The Green Festival focusing on discussions, skill-shares, and workshops centering finding solutions to living healthier lives socially, economically and environmentally. Speakers this year include Russell Simmons, Amy Goodman, and Van Jones. See the full NYC schedule here.

Bianca will be on a panel discussing called “The F-word: Perspectives on Contemporary Feminism” at 5pm on Saturday and talking about how she identifies as a radical woman of Color and how her AfraLatinidad impacts that decision/label/etc. She’ll be on the same panel as media maker Aiesha Turman. As a member of this panel, Bianca received several free passes for one day each (a $15 value).

If you’d like a pass leave us a note with an email address where we can contact you so that we can reach you, get a mailing address and number of tickets, and mail you the passes. (Last time Bianca spoke at an event on feminisms and identified as a radical woman of Color, 3 older white women walked out!)

The SPEAK CD is waiting for YOU

from Flip Flopping Joy comes the link to this SUPER review of the SPEAK CD, of which our lovely Mamita Mala is a part of! A taste of the review:

Most of the pieces rely on minimal sounds – light percussion, synthesizers, background noise – if there’s any sound besides the speaker at all, so E. Rose Sims’ “On Cartography and Dissection” is a jarring change of pace, with an orchestrated score that matches the dark tone of her exploration of monsters. The piece is a brilliant series of connections between colonialism and transphobia and racism, with mapmaking serving as a metaphor for the naming and conquering of the human body. Flags are planted, already-established realities are ignored, and healthy, natural identities are twisted, by colonizers, into “a wrongness, a distortion.” Sims’s voice brims with sadness and anger as thunder crackles behind her and she ponders what Medusa felt the first time she saw her own reflection.

There are delightful moments of humor in the collection, too. BabyBFP, giggling, reads a poem about her cats, and the CD begins to draw to a close with a spirited rendition of “I Feel Pretty.” When I saw the title on the track listing, I was afraid it would be corny, but these ladies pull it off.

So what are you waiting for??? GO BUY THE CD!!

speak
Last summer in Detroit, I was blessed and was a part of a group of incredible radical women of color media makers and media justice fighters. We spilled and spit our voices and experiences into a mic and transformed that into a CD compilation of spoken word, poetry, and song and ahora you can share our experience and in the process help mamis of color and other mujeractivistas attend this year’s Allied Media Conference.

Speak! is a women of color-led media collective. In the summer months of 2008, they created a CD compilation of spoken word, poetry, and song. After months of hard work, they are excited to finally share their first self-named album with the world!

With artists and poets from all over the country, the Speak! CD is a testament of struggle, hope, and love. Many of the contributors are in the Radical Women of Color blogosphere and will be familiar names to you. Instead of just reading their work, you’ll be able to hear their voices.

VL’s own Maegan la Mala (me!) is on the cd and you can also get a zine and download a curriculum porque the voices and experiences on the cd are not just meant to be listened to and forgotten pero rather are meant as steps to build movement forward upon.

The cd is $12 and $17 for the CD and zine. You can purchase the cd and zine here.
