From Buzz Flash we get the news that apparently somebody thought it was a good, funny, ironic idea to put a racist picture of Barack Obama on the front of a box of pancake mix and sell that mix to other racists like Lou Dobbs.

A description of the box:

While Obama Waffles takes aim at Obama’s politics by poking fun at his public remarks and positions on issues, it also plays off the old image of the pancake-mix icon Aunt Jemima, which has been widely criticized as a demeaning stereotype. Obama is portrayed with popping eyes and big, thick lips as he stares at a plate of waffles and smiles broadly.

The Many Rumors of Sarah Palin

11:58 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · US Presidential Race 2008 · 3 Comments

8 Sep 2008

SarahTrig.jpgI’ve learned to take rumors for what they are…often not true, often partially true, often completly true. Sarah Palin has had a huge amount of rumors swirling about her since she announced her candidacy, one of the biggest being that her daughter gave birth to Trig (the youngest child you’ve probably seen in the arms of the older children) and Palin was passing it off as her own. I, frankly, thought that this particular rumor was completly out there untrue, until the Palin camp released a statement saying her daughter was really preggers.

9322471737eaa9c3debsd3.jpgWhile the name, Center for Immigrant Studies, sounds non-partisan enough, in reality they are a right wing white supremacist hate group using their various fronts to spread lies to feed into the mainstream media and the mainstream media buys it!

Their latest piece of nonsense? Blaming immigration for the end of the world as we know it : global warming. Yes, that’s right folks. Polar bears drowning as icecaps melt? Blame the immigrants. Troubling weather patterns? Blame the immigrants.

They have such incredibly stupid “data” includes factors like “immigrant emissions”. Tell me they’re not talking about José’s and Tanya’s farts?

Did Obama Support Lead to Car Keying?

9:00 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · US Presidential Race 2008 · Comments Off

29 Jul 2008

th_17006107_240X180.jpgA Vancouver woman with a Barack Obama sign by her house found her car keyed with some choice words.

The words “white power” and “I’m gay” were etched into the car of Karen Wastradowski last Saturday. Wastradowski had left her car in the driveway of her home when the vandals struck.

She filed a report with Vancouver police. Wastradowski said a blue “Elect Obama” sign in her yard could have caused the crime.

I know that whenever I see a John McCain sign I have the uncontrollable urge to tag “Puerto Rican Power” oh but wait, I don’t think I’ve seen a John McCain sign.

Apparently the area where the keying happened has a history of racist assholes.

Yes, Clark County has its share of unrepentant bigots. Earlier this year the son of a Battle Ground city council member was charged with cyberstalking over virulently racist emails sent to a black council member and other community members. So while vandalism is not exactly an unusual thing during the summer months, it’s also not acceptable to just shrug off racist defacement of private property as “just kids being kids.” They learned it somewhere.

Jay Smooth on How to Call Peeps Out on Their Racism

4:17 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Uncategorized · Comments Off

21 Jul 2008

As much as I love me some Jay Smooth, I don’t know if I completely buy the argument that we need to call peeps out who are being racist based on their actions and not on the fact that they are racist. Why? Bueno porque there are so many subtle ways of being racist without saying the slurs and making the watermelon jokes. Can’t I do both? Can’t I just smack ‘em upside the head?
What do you think?

michael_savage_mic.jpgMichael Savage, the shock jock whose bigoted rhetoric has ruffled more than a few feathers over the years has got something to say about refugees to the United States. An email from media watchdog group Media Matters fills us in:

Michael Savage asserted on June 23: “We’re getting refugees now who have never used a telephone, a toothbrush, or toilet paper. You’re telling me they’re going to assimilate? They will never assimilate. They come here and they bring their destitute ways to this country, and they never assimilate.”

He continued: “And then their children become gang-bangers. It is a disaster.”

Savage added that earlier immigrants to the U.S. “had used toilet paper and toothbrushes and they knew how to survive in this country. They took a job or they worked. They didn’t come and sit and have 16 children and eat beetle nuts.”

European immigrants were “civilized” and modern day immigrants are somehow less deserving of the right to seek a new life in another country. If I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard that one…

If you’ve got a strong stomach you can also listen to the entire audio file on the Media Matters website.

Race and the Criminal Justice System : An Inside Reminder

11:00 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Justice|New York City|race · Comments Off

judges-gavel.jpgMy 28 year old “baby” sister just completed jury duty in the same courthouse where the officer’s that killed Sean Bell were acquitted in Queens, NY. It was an eye opening experience for her because she witnessed first hand how racism against Latinos is built into the very justice system. The case involved a young Latino man accused of gun possession. His accusers were NYC Public School Safety officers, now a subdivision of the NYC police department. A lack of evidence tying the accused to the gun (dubious witness accounts, no fingerprints even taken) eventually led to a not guilty verdict, but what also, undoubtedly influenced the jury was the blatant racism shown by the judge, who is supposed to be impartial.

Pshaw, racism, smacism.

Victoria Switzer, a retired social studies teacher, was on phone-bank duty one night during the Pennsylvania primary campaign. One night was all she could take: “It wasn’t pretty.” She made 60 calls to prospective voters in Susquehanna County, her home county, which is 98 percent white. The responses were dispiriting. One caller, Switzer remembers, said he couldn’t possibly vote for Obama and concluded: “Hang that darky from a tree!”

capt.nyol92003122337.obama_ferraro_nyol920.jpgEveryday I’m reminded how lucky I am to be a woman of color, a Latina, a Puerto Rican. I’m so lucky apparently that white women want to be women of color to get big book deals. When people of color question how such things can happen, how can so many real stories of the struggles of people of color get passed by, silenced ? If the answer we dare to speak is racism, well then we are racist against white people. Remind me how lucky I am again?

Enter Geraldine Ferraro who stepped down from her honorary post in the Hillary Clinton presidential campaign because she reminded Barack Obama (and all people of color in powerful positions) just how lucky he is:

“If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept.”

Who Says the Minutemen Aren’t Scary

9:50 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Activism|Immigration · Comments Off

4 Feb 2008

Groups of more than 2 white men on a corner make me nervous to begin with (tongue firmly planted in cheek) but for those who say Minutemen aren’t scary or up for some good ole-fashioned threatening, well I guess the above was staged.
