puertorico.jpgThe President of the National Puerto Rican Day Parade may have played a greater role in the 208 arrests that happened on Fifth Avenue two Sundays ago then originally admitted to. Madelyn Lugo is now admitting that she warned the New York City Police Department to be prepared for the Latin Kings. She said it was because she knew how controversial the street organization is. He actions may have been key in the mass sweeps that arrested not just so-called “gang” members but other non-affiliated parade goers.

Police say they arrested four people, charging them with disorderly conduct and inciting a riot during a street party held after Sunday’s Puerto Rican Day Parade in Manhattan. Police claim that party goers attacked them while witnesses say that women and children were pepper sprayed, and cameras which videotaped the police were confiscated.

Watching more than Floats and Flags at Rican Parade

Rican Pride Parade Season Begins

10:40 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · history|New York City|Puerto Rico · Comments Off

18 May 2007

puertorico.jpgHere in NYC, you know that the Puerto Rican parade season has begun when cars drive by with the red, white, and blue one star and stripes on the hood. A walk past an Old Navy store revealed Puerto Rican flags on tank tops for sale. Many Puerto Ricans complain that some of our own wave the flag but once a year and with little knowledge of the history behind the flag. For example did you know that the Puerto Rican flag was designed in New York City and that its inspiration was drawn from the Cuban flag? So before you start singing Que Bonita Bandera make sure you know where the roots of your bandera are.

TatoBrujo over on MySpace gives a great detailed history of the Puerto Rican flag.
