From Buzz Flash we get the news that apparently somebody thought it was a good, funny, ironic idea to put a racist picture of Barack Obama on the front of a box of pancake mix and sell that mix to other racists like Lou Dobbs.

A description of the box:

While Obama Waffles takes aim at Obama’s politics by poking fun at his public remarks and positions on issues, it also plays off the old image of the pancake-mix icon Aunt Jemima, which has been widely criticized as a demeaning stereotype. Obama is portrayed with popping eyes and big, thick lips as he stares at a plate of waffles and smiles broadly.

This video of Matt Damon discussing Sarah Palin as a V.P. candidate is making the internet rounds right now. The already classic line from the clip, “I need to know if she thinks dinosaurs were here 4,000 years ago because she’s going to have the nuclear code.”

I do believe that my respect for Mr. Damon just increased ten-fold. Although I feel a slight sneaky suspicion that there is just a tad of hidden sexism in his words–is there something wrong with hockey mom’s? I get his point that being a hockey mom doesn’t qualify you to be president, but why does being a lawyer qualify you more than being a hockey mom? What really *does* qualify you to be a president? I’ve heard some politicians say that really, nothing can–but we as a country do seem to feel more comfortable with unqualified men taking over high power positions with little to no experience that we do women. I think it’s fair to question why that is. What do you think?

The Many Rumors of Sarah Palin

SarahTrig.jpgI’ve learned to take rumors for what they are…often not true, often partially true, often completly true. Sarah Palin has had a huge amount of rumors swirling about her since she announced her candidacy, one of the biggest being that her daughter gave birth to Trig (the youngest child you’ve probably seen in the arms of the older children) and Palin was passing it off as her own. I, frankly, thought that this particular rumor was completly out there untrue, until the Palin camp released a statement saying her daughter was really preggers.

If you (like many!!) are struggling to make it through all the political rhetoric being thrown about now during the U.S. election cycle, please click over to WOC PhD’s place for a “just the facts” sort of post on the Green Party’s team: Cynthia McKinney and Rosa Clemente. Some of the facts:

* extend access to education to immigrants and low income college students without debt
* insure housing – stop government plans to demolish unused housing and give to developers for “revitalization” instead of recycling/refurbishing homes for low income and homeless use,
* address government policies that encourage gentrification to ensure the preservation of affordable housing and established communities success
* sign the UN Declaration on Indigenous Rights
* support all workers rights to unionize end anti-union policies in industries

First John McCain Ad in Espanish

So is the man you’ve been waiting for Latinos? The ad is nearly identical to an English language ad with one exception.

The tag line. In English, it is “The American president Americans have been waiting for.” In Spanish, it is “The president that all of us in the United States had been waiting for.” (”El presidente que todos en Estados Unidos estábamos esperando”).
Throughout Latin America, the term “American” (”americano”) refers to any resident of North, South or Central America. The McCain campaign clearly took note of this subtle but important distinction.
