15 Mar 2006

lrivera.jpgThe hosts for the 2006 Latin Billboard Latin Awards have been revealed. Lupillo Rivera, a huge force in that mix of genres that gringos like to call “Regional Mexican” and TV personality Candela Ferro will be doing the honors:

Rivera is a finalist this year for regional Mexican album of the year, male solo artist for “El Rey de las Cantinas” (Univision/UG) and regional Mexican airplay song of the year, male solo artist for “Ya Me Habian Dicho.”

The 2006 Billboard Latin Music Awards will mark the fourth time that Ferro has co-hosted the show. Candela currently presents the top-rated Telemundo primetime program “Decisiones.”

As previously reported, reggaeton star Daddy Yankee and Mexican pop phenomenon RBD — both part of the youth movement that dominated Billboard’s Latin charts last year — are the leading finalists for the 2006 awards. Daddy Yankee is a finalist in 10 categories. RBD, which burst into mainstream consciousness last year with “Rebelde,” is a contender in nine categories, including top Latin albums artist.

More RBD and more Daddy Yankee. Can we get some diversity up in here please?

24 Feb 2006

a167[1].jpg10:37: Andy Andy and Lu present “Best Rock en espanol artist”.

WINNER: JUANES!

Juanes is so great. “Todas mis canciones tienen un nombre y ese nombre es Colombia”. (Tearing up)

10:40: Okay some dumbasses are dancing “el perreo” in their evening gowns and tuxes. Where is Don Omar in all this? Best “Cancion genero urbano”. Oh, there’s Don Omar, nominated.

WINNER: Daddy Yankee! Why did this fool just call him “Danny Yankee”? Here we go with the subtitles again…”que tengamos los huevos reales…” WTF?

10:43: Paty is saying some oh-so-cliche crap about all Latinos loving their family and getting along perfectly. It’s an intro to a performance by Ana Barbara performing with…her siblings??? Huh?

Dude, her nose is unreal. I mean, I am biased because I hate her, but what is up with her nose? Wait…her bro has the same nose…so it’s not surgery!!!!!!!! Revelation of the year!!! She’s singing “Fruta prohibida” or something. Now some banda action with her bros. This is boring the hell out of me.

Man, these awards are LOOONG…

a167[1].jpg10:17: WINNER: Laura Pausini is “Best Female Pop Artist” of the year. Okay, I don’t love her music but her personality is awesome. She’s proud to sing in Spanish. So cute.

10:18: Oh my God, I know they didn’t just call Sergio Goyri “el gran actor”. What standards are they using? “Grandes estrellas de peliculas de narcotraficantes”? Okay, here we go, “Banda” of the Year…

WINNER: Banda El Recodo…does anyone else ever win this?

Poncho accepted the award without the rest of the band…what up with that?

10:20: The ads…I’m bored of them…sorry…

10:24: Video of the year…didn’t catch who was presenting…Oh, God, again with Laura Pausini…Luis Fonsi…Luis Miguel…SHAKIRA!…Vico C…Anasol…

WINNER: Luis Fonsi!

He’s looking mighty surprised. “Mucha gracia May-ami!” Is he enanito? He looks so short. Dedicates the award to his “coco”. Some dumb chick in the audience gets caught using her phone on camera.

10:27: “Grupo aerobatico antigravity” doing some acrobatics with some reggaeton peeps…sorry, I’m ignorant, who are these people? I can only distinguish Daddy Yankee…Pretty awesome light show and choreography, whoever they are. “Racata…rrracataa….si se me pega voy a darle”. Thank God for Closed Captioning for the hearing impaired.

a167[1].jpg10:00: The ads: Neutrogena Acne Wash with Paola Rey as spokesperson…Motrola Slivr; English ad translated to Spanish.

10:02: The moment I’ve been waiting for all night. One of my top 5 favorites in any genre, the marvelous Ana Gabriel, who’s receiving a lifetime achievement award tonight. Damn, the sound sucks again! She looks great though, in a glittery purple suit and purple eye shadow. You go, Anita! She’s totally suffering and feeling pain as usual…I love it!

10:05: Juanes gives Ana the award. She kisses him…so cute! She’s totally piropeando him saying she wants to take off his “camisa negra”. She says she wants to take advantage of having him on the stage to kiss him. “I don’t know if I deserve this or not, but I know that work and discipline is what counts. With effort, discipline and desire, you can achieve it.” Dedicates the award to her parents. ” Camera cuts to Pausini and she totally has the face of “No entender”. Starting to sing “Quien como tu”. YEAH!!! “Y nada tengo yo que esperar aunque me quedo en el aire…” I LOVE IT!!! She’s barefoot and rocking some sparkly jeans. DIVA.

10:10: Hell yeah, it’s a medley…the Mexican gay anthem “Simplemente Amigos”…”pero es que en realidad no aceptan nuestro amor…”

Strike that prediction about Shakira stealing the show…my girl Ana did.

a167[1].jpg9:30: Ninel Conde, luciendo su pechonalidad, presents Best Male Vocalist in Regional Mexican category. Luis Miguel is nominated…he isn’t “regional mexicana”…my fave Pepe Aguilar is nominated. He won’t win because it’s obvious who will. It’s his night.

WINNER: Marco Antonio Solis

9:32: Rene and Paty present Luis Fonsi. He’s in the middle of the audience and among a sea of Puerto Rican flags. Sorry, but his singing SUCKS. Missing all kinds of notes. Pobre.

9:35: The Ads: BIG advertisers: McDonald’s with “I’m lovin’ it”…not impressed. Lays, however, has a pretty cute ad. Quirky.

9:40: Monchy and Alejandra performing. Safe to say they are a cut above Luis Fonsi singing live. God, this song sounds just like that “vuela, vuela” song — or is it just me? The dancers are pretty cheesy…dressed like the 50s but with masks on.

9:45: Mayte Delgado and Alejandro Avila presenting “Best Grupero Artist”. Bronco…Grupo Inovacion…Temerarios…Marco Antonio…

Guess who…

WINNER: Los Temerarios! I totally thought it was Marco Antonio again. Fooled me!

a167[1].jpg9:22: Fernando Arau and Aron Gonzalez presenting Best “Genero urbano” artist. They are totally making fun of the reggaeton lexicon and pull out a “Reggaeton-Spanish / Spanish-Reggaeton” dictionary. Hmm…who will win. DUH.

WINNER: Daddy Yankee!

What is happening to me that DY looks appealing? Too much bitching about reggaeton comes back to bite you in the ass I guess. As usual I can’t understand.

9:24: Paty presents some Banda act. Didn’t catch who they were, I had to get up and that was the perfect time.

9:27: The ads…First GMC ad of the night. BORING…the same ones again and again. Unless there is something new, I won’t comment on them anymore.

24 Feb 2006

a167[1].jpg9:10: Tropical Song of the Year presented by part of Grupo Reik…one guy is missing and they had a cardboard cutout of him.

WINNER: OLGAAAAAAAAAA! She’s wearing a top hat and man’s suit and totally pulls it off. Like Juanes, if Olga is in your category, you are screwed.

9:12: Lidia Avila and Poncho Lizarraga present Best Pop Male Vocalist. Bad, bad, bad jokes. Lidia looks pretty.

WINNER: Luis Fonsi!

9:15: Rene Strickler introduces Laura Pausini referring to her as LATINA…Here we go again! Laura seems like a nice girl and all, but is another one of those performers I can’t see the appeal in. She’s just so flat pop. I do like hearing an Italian sing in Spanish though, it’s cute.

9:18: The Ads: JC Penney…another bland ad but at least it has some Latino people in it. Bud Light again. T-Mobile again. JC Penney again! Somebody’s trying hard. Chevy Silverado…there are some cowboy hat-wearing Tejanos in this one. Still bland.

a167[1].jpg9:00: Best regional Mexican song presented by Mauricio Aspe and Eugenia somebody.

WINNER: My boys Intocable! Yeah!

9:05: Best rock song presented by Reyli and Cynthia Olevarria…so very obvious who is going to win when Juanes is in the mix.

WINNER: JUANES!

9:07: Daddy Yankee is about to hit the stage. It sounds LOUD. OMG, the stage, the background, the design is awesome! Truly a show-stopper. Huge screens, bigger than life, flashing the words “Hermandad” and quotes by Victor Hugo. I’m not a reggaeton fan, but that was great!

9:10: The Ads: Wendy’s again. Did I mention I really like this ad? Finally something smart in Latino-targeted advertising. Chevy Tahoe…God their ads or so boring and not targeted at all. There’s the vitamin commercial again…”genetically specific for Hispanics”…sorry for the redundance, but WTF??? AT&T…a mainstream ad with a Latino voiceover. Way to go, AT&T. Sierra Mist…pretty good ad, marginally funny, which is a lot for Latino marketing.

a167[1].jpg8:20: The ads: Pepsi, with Eva Longoria…not a fave. TMobile: I love it. Guys texting each other, arguing whether a soccer play was a foul or not. Budweiser ad was boring. Nothing truly groundbreaking here.

8:25: My paisanos Intocable singing “Contra Viento y marea”. Awesome. Looks like they fixed the sound.

8:28: Award time: Best Tropical Album…I want Olga to win…

Everyone is screaming “OLGA!”

WINNER: YEAH!! OLGA!!!! I heart Olga!
Now she’s dancing with some reggaeton guy and singing her thanks.

8:30: No idea who these fools are. Un tal Jorge Reyes presenting Best Album, “genero urbano”.

WINNER: Luny Tunes and Baby Ranks…I can’t understand a word they are saying, except “Viva el reggaeton!”

8:32: The Ads: Hispanic Vitamins? “Only for the Hispanic community”…WTF???

The Wendy’s ad…I love it. It’s so silly but really my kind of funny. Glad to see I misread Stuart Elliot (NYT) in thinking that the real Latino artists were going to be in the ad.

Chevy Impala…typical car ad.

a167[1].jpgAlmost 8:00…start already! Got my beer and I’m ready to go.

What the HELL is Marco Antonio Solis wearing???

Not so live from San Francisco…

8:00 — Juanes!!! He always looks so effortless when he’s performing. OMG the sound is horrible. Can we get some production value over here?

8:05 pm — Juanes introduces Shakira. Wow — two HOT stars back to back! Pobrecita has got her pajamas on. It’s very her though. AGAIN with the horrible sound. Weird to see her not gyrating around. I love Shakira. Prediction: she will be the star of this show.

8:10 — Paty Manterola and Rene Strickler (hosts) come out. Dumb schtick. Paty welcomes the English speaking audience, letting them know that they can get the English channel for sound as well. Crowd cheers when Daddy Yankee’s name is mentioned and when they mention Luis Miguel…nada.

8:12 — First award, presented by Jaqueline “Saltamontes” and Roberto Palazuelos: Best Album. Shakira, Kumbia Kings, Pausini, Luis Fonsi, Obie Bermudez.

WINNER: SHAKIRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

8:15 — La Quinta Estacion presenting the next award, Females artist of the year, Regional Mexican category: Ana Barbara, Diana Reyes, Isabela, Mariana (who ARE these people???)

WINNER: Ana Barbara…sin comentario All really had to say was “gracias” but not to her new hubby
