Graduation picture of African American Nicolas Heyward Jr., aged 14The Nicholas Naquan Heyward Jr. Memorial Foundation Inc.Invites you to our 16 Annual Day of Remembrance for Nicholas Heyward, Jr.

Nicholas was a 13 year old honor student from Boerum Hill Gowanus Houses, Killed by housing police, while playing cops & robbers. I met Nicolas Sr., in the late 1990′s when I was a teenager just getting politicized and working against police brutality in NYC during the “Giuliani Time”. Nicholas Sr., was one of the few fathers, among mothers who held marches, rallies, and followed then Mayor Giuliani, making sure that wherever he and his police chief was, so were we, with pictures of the dead. When Nicholas was killed all he was doing was playing, the way children should. When Nicholas was killed, the Housing Police were separate from the NYPD. So many years later, Nicholas’ father struggles on against a police force that has consolidated power and now runs the projects, the subways, and the schools (as well as the streets). So many years later, Nicholas and I see each other at rallies, now I have a child who will be the same age Nicholas was when he was shot and killed, and we hug, as parents, as fighters.

Iman%20Morales.jpgA few months ago, we wrote about, Iman Morales, a mentally ill man, was killed by NYPD officers on September 24th, 2008. Mr. Morales was tasered while standing on the ledge of a store front awning 10 feet high without an air bag to break his fall. The officers ignored his mother’s cries for an airbag, and made no attempts to catch Mr. Morales who fell to his death after being tasered.

“He was a good son. He didn’t deserve this. It shouldn’t happen to anyone else. All he needed was a little help, which the NYPD didn’t give him,” Olga Negron, mother of Iman Morales.

I Am Sean Bell : A Film By Stacey Muhammad

5 Jan 2009

I remember being pregnant with my first child when Abner Louima was assaulted by the NYPD and feeling worried that I would have a boy, a boy in a city where brown boys grow up feeling that they can be shot at a moment’s notice. That bullet can come from generic street crime or from the police.

I gave birth to a girl but 12 years later the fears are the same.

archangel-michael.jpgLast night, we wrote about how a religious event in the Bronx, NY ended with community members harassed and arrested. This is how the powers that be treat even the most sacred things in our lives : with suspicion and ultimately, violence and repression.

Those expecting justice in the court system come out with a mixed bag.

Last evening about 15 members of the community gathered in court to await Amari’s arraignment. The Judge, District Attorneys and Court Officers were not happy. As Amaris was released on here own recognizance on multiple misdemeanor charges and her supporters walked out of the courtroom, court officers grabed Mujahid, a member of Taino Survivalists.
A face off between community people and court officers ensued in which we were told that Mujahid was arrested for disorderly conduct. When asked what had he done , we were told that “Constitution had been suspended by officer James badge # 3726. This was then echoed by officer Jack # 6788.

All supporters were then ordered out of the Court Building. About 1/2 hour later Mujahid was released without charges.

They just need to remind us who is in charge.
