Poetas Invade Nueva York

poster%20poesia%20nyc%204WEB.0.jpgNew York City is under invasion and there is no better invasion than a poetic one. Today marks day one of The 3rd Annual Encuentro de Nueva Poesía, a weeklong series of events throughout NYC that brings together written and spoken word artists from various corners of the planet.

The Encuentro has two successful antecedents. The first time the Festival “Poetas en Nueva York” was carried out was in April 2004, in honor of Pedro Pietri, and over 20 poets participated, for three days, in events at Nuyorican Poets’ Café in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. The second iteration, where the name Encuentro de Nueva Poesía was coined, was celebrated in October 2005. It then included the participation of over 40 poets from diverse backgrounds, among them residents of New York who were originally from countries like Costa Rica, Colombia, Ecuador, and the Dominican Republic. It also counted with the presence of a delegation of Puerto Rican poets and artists who traveled to New York City solely for the purpose of participating in the events. The Encounter took place in diverse settings in Upper and Lower Manhattan, as well as the Boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens, and concluded with the publication of a poetry anthology with the artists’ works.

La Tula: Heard of her?

f1.jpgI, unfortunately, had not, but am glad to come out of my own ignorance and discover her work. Following La Mala’s theme of highlighting exceptional mujeres, I found this little gem on Regalado blog out of Cuba (thanks, special friend, for sharing your 14,000 obscure Latino feeds with me — you know who you are). Translated for your reading pleasure:

Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda was blocked from entering the Real Academia Española. She is considered a precursor to modern feminism, as much for her vibrant attitude as for the strength that she gave her female literary characters.

Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda (1814-1873), a Cuban born writer that lived in Spain from age 22, is considered one othe most authentics voices of Latino romanticism.

Her life was a cumulus of tragedies comparable only to those of her characters. The death of her father and the rushed re-marriage of her mother drove her out of Cuba to Europe, where she came into contact with the romance literature of the time; Victor Hugo, Chateaubriand and Lord Byron.

Lluvia Poetica

14 Oct 2005

52312356_97002471fd_t.jpgIt’s been pouring for days here in New York City, but water isn’t the only thing flooding the streets. Words, sounds, beats and rhythms, in English, Spanish and variations between have been saturating the Latino scene thanks to the presence of Poetas en Nueva York : el Segundo Encuentro de Nueva Poesia. The four day poetry and spoken word series brings not just local Latino poets together; a group of spoken word spitters and poetas direct from la isla del encanto, Puerto Rico, are taking part as well. The series, sponsored by a variety of Latino and literary institutions and organizations, includes performances, exhibitions, and lectures at various lugares throughout New York City.

I had the pleasure of attending and participating in the first event in the series on Wednesday, La Tertulia de Fusion Atómica. D’Antigua, a bar/restaurant in Jackson Heights, was packed. Poetas weren’t going to let a little bit of rain ruin their night. It wasn’t about traditional iambic pentameter either. All the poets that performed mixed politics with pride and sometimes even threw in a Reggaeton beat.

As the rain promises to continue to fall through the weekend, show your love and open your mind to some incredible talent and their ideas from New York and Puerto Rico.
