When Texas-based pizza chain Pizza Patron began accepting Mexican pesos as a form of payment for its pizzas last year, there was outrage among right-wingers who despised this “catering to” Mexican residents in the state. Well, the publicity must have worked well for Pizza Patron as another Texas business is replicating its model. Value Giant, a Dallas-area retailer, announced that it will also be accepting pesos at its stores.
Just a publicity stunt or a sincere attempt to better serve their Mexican customers? What do you think?

While air travel might be a hard enough sell that half naked flight attendants sound like a good idea to marketers, I didn’t think pizza needed help. In Canada, savvy businesspeople know that sex sells, and are using it to sell their pizzas:
Pizza sellers in Western Canada have decided to buy into the saying “sex sells”: they are delivery pornographic photos with their products. Porno Pizza, which opened last week in Winnipeg, has had great success with their idea of covering the bottoms of their pizza boxes with pornographic images.“They range from photos with an artistic bent like Playboy magazine to photos that are much more hardcore,” says Corey Wildeman, owner of the establishment, who says that the photos become visible as you eat the pizza.
Pizza porn might be the next big thing in Canada, but could it spread to the U.S.? With pizza names like “Hawaii Five ‘ho’” and others that I’m too embarrassed to repeat, this gimmick just might appeal to American consumers starved for pizza and for sex.

I’ve written before about how a relatively little-known pizza chain called Pizza Patrón is doing an amazing job catering to Spanish-speaking customers, mainly recent immigrants from Mexico, by tailoring their marketing — and their menu — to the tastes of that community. In another smart and surprising move, the chain has announced that they will be accepting Mexican pesos at their stores:
Starting Monday, patrons of the Dallas-based Pizza Patrón chain, which caters heavily to Latinos, will be able to purchase American pizzas with Mexican pesos.Restaurant experts and economists said they knew of no other food chain with locations so far from the Mexican border offering such a service.
“We’re trying to reach out to our core customer,” Antonio Swad, president of Pizza Patrón Inc., said Friday.
“We know they come back [from Mexico] and have pesos left over. We want to be a convenient place for them to spend their pesos.”

19 Apr 2006We don’t cite a web site called Pizza Marketing Quartely very often, but this little story has piqued our interest. Have you ever seen those acrobatic pizza dough competitions on the Food Network? As bizarre at it may seem to you, these contests have their stars and one of the biggest is a Mexican named Juan Hermosillo, a pizza tosser who had been living in the U.S. since he was 9 years old.
The fourth place title in the entire world goes to Juan Hermosillo for dough tossing at the 2006 World Pizza Championship in Salsomaggiore, Italy. However, Juan, who represented the United States as the U.S. Pizza Team’s acrobatic dough tosser, has been denied the right to re-enter into the United States, where he has lived for the past seventeen years of his life.

I randomly came across a very interesting site while doing a search for “Mexico”. It’s an online resource about Mexico, for children, in English, maintained by the Mexican government and it’s called El Balero.
The idea itself is marvelous — I’m all about American kids learning about other countries — but the rudimentary, albeit well-meaning style makes for a few laughs. I think it’s really cute, though a bit…um…bossy. A few highlights:
Have a lot of fun! (re: reading the site)
Esquites are a famous Mexican tradition. They’re delicious and easy to prepare, You should give them a try!
Have a lot of fun! (re: playing Mexican games)
Enjoy yourself making and eating it! (re: making mini-pizzas)
An adult should help you to prepare your pizza
so you won’t have an accident.
Follow the instructions!
You are going to have fun!!
