Aging (read: very old — 91 years old to be exact) Chilean ex-dictator Augusto Pinochet has been placed under house arrest after being charged with multiple kidnappings and one murder charge:
Pinochet, who turns 91 on November 25th, was notified by a justice official at his mansion in Santiago’s La Dehesa neighborhood of the decision, made last Friday by Judge Alejandro Solís, for the crimes committed in Villa Grimaldi detention center.Solís tried the nonagenarian ex-dictator (1973-1990) after having rejecting a petition by his defense team to exonerate him, arguing that he is too physically and mentally incapacitated to stand trial.
Judge Solís made his decision after formally interrogating Pinochet and deciding that he was “lucid” enough to stand trial, that he “understands the consequences of his words”, and that he had an “emotional reaction” to the questions.
Spain’s 20 Minutos reports that the specific crimes related to this court decision are related to incidents at Villa Grimaldi (at the “Cuartel Terranova”) where 5000 people were tortured — among them current Chilean president Michelle Bachelet and her mother — and 226 turned up missing.
20 Minutos also cites other charges that have been or will be lodged against the ex-dictator, among the disappearance of 119 protesters, the executions of 75 dissidents, as well as falsification of passports, tax evasion and money laundering.

Unlike his friend Pinochet, Alfredo Stroessner’s day has come. The ex-dictator of Paraguay has died at the age of 93 in exile in Brazil after a month in the hospital.
Unlike other controversial Latin American dictators, Stroessner has kept a relatively low profile since his exile in 1989. From 20 Minutos:
Stroessner was born in Encarnación, in Southern Paraguay, November 3, 1912, and resided in Brasilia since two days after his defeat on February 3, 1989.The dictatorship he led for nearly 25 years concluded that day, when a coup de etat led by the now deceased general Andrés Rodríguez, then commander of the cavalry and in-law of Stroessner, was triumphant.
Rodríguez was de facto president for one month and then called for elections, from which he emerged as constitutional Head of State.
He remained in the government until 1993, when he was succeeded by Juan Carlos Wasmosy, the first civilian to govern Paraguay in 40 years.
During this exile in Brasilia, Stroessner strictly respected the silence imposed upon him by Brasilian authorities in exchange for offering him asylum and lived in absolute discretion.
Despite repeated attempts to have Stroessner extradited to his native country, Paraguayan authorities were unsuccessful in removing him from Brazil.

I spent 70 minutes last night in el Palacio de la Moneda in Santiago de Chile sharing Salvador Allende’s final moments on September 11, 1973. Colombian actor Ramiro Sandoval plays the first democratically elected Socialist president of the Americas in the stage production, Allende:The Death of a President now showing at the Theater for the New City in the Lower East Side of New York City. They say that before you die, your entire life flashes before your eyes. Argentino-Americano journalist and current editor of the New York Daily News Spanish language weekly, la Hora Hispana, has wriiten a monologue that imagines what Allende was thinking in the hours leading up to his death including reflections on his life as a political leader, husband, and father.
90 year old former Chilean dictator, Augusto Pinochet, was fingerprinted and had his mugshot taken yesterday as part of his indictment in the killing and disappearance of nine people in the 1970’s. The booking took place in Pinochet’s mansion in a suburb of the Chilean capital of Santiago, where he has been under house arrest.
