The Journalist and the Foreign Minister

1%2Bcopia.jpgAh, crushes. How many of us have pined after celebrities, sighed for politicians, and dreamed of romantic interludes with other public figures. Most of us don’t write about these little fantasies on our blogs (thank God) but a certain Peruvian journalist, one Luis Iparraguirre (pictured above, in the middle), did, and let the world know about his love for his country’s Foreign Minister, Mercedes Araoz. His blog, Crónicas de Pollada (gotta love that name), was the scene of the declaration of love, and little did he know that his “Carta de Amor” would actually reach the object of his affections:

In a love letter published on his blog, journalist Luis Iparraguirre tells the Minister: “Can I call you Meche? Can I call you mine? Hey, I know you are not, but you will be tonight in my dreams.”

Fujimori will run for Japanese senate

8:14 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Peru|Politics|World · Comments Off

27 Jun 2007

fujimori.jpgLast week we told you that ex-President of Peru Alberto Fujimori was mulling over the idea of running for a Senate seat in Japan. Today it was announced that the embattled ex-leader will indeed run in that country, and many in Peru are unhappy, saying that this is just an attempt to avoid extradition from his current country of residence, Chile.

Upon hearing about the announcement, ex-minister of Peru Carlos Ferrero said:

“This reveals that Fujimori wants to avoid extradition. He probably thinks that this process will be favorable for Peru. But it also means that he is speeding the end of his political career in Peru, and that of his followers. What Peruvian Fujimori movement can exist if its principal leader is a Senator in Japan?”

Good point. Without a Fujimori, can there really be Fujimoristas? But his becoming a Senator in Japan doesn’t mean he won’t ever return. This is getting very interesting.

diazperu-cp-201618.jpgCameron Diaz is saying sorry today for a cultural faux pas related to her choice of purses. Last week she was photographed at Machu Pichu sporting a Maoist-themed bag which stirred up all kinds of emotions:

The voice of Princess Fiona in the animated “Shrek” films visited the Incan city of Machu Picchu in Peru’s Andes on Friday carrying an olive green bag emblazoned with a red star and the words “Serve the People” printed in Chinese, perhaps Chinese Communist leader Mao Zedong’s most famous political slogan.

The bags are marketed as fashion accessories in some world capitals, but in Peru the slogan evokes memories of the Maoist Shining Path insurgency that fought the government in the 1980s and early 1990s in a bloody conflict that left nearly 70,000 people dead.

Latin American countries experiencing job growth

2:45 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Argentina|Labor|Latin America|Peru · Comments Off

25 Jun 2007

south-america-map.gifLatin American countries traditionally plagued by unemployment and weak economies are beginning to experience a notable level of job growth, according to Forbes.com’s list of “The World’s Hottest Job Markets”, based on Manpower’s quarterly Global Employment Outlook. The South American countries ranked in the Top 5 for job growth: Peru and Argentina:

Manpower’s quarterly Global Employment Outlook, which surveyed over 50,000 employers across 27 countries, ranked Peru No. 2 and Argentina No. 4 in expected job growth for the July-September quarter. The firm scored each country by subtracting the percentage of companies that said they plan to cut back on workers from the percentage that said they plan to add them. A country where 75% of employers plan to add to their workforces and 25% plan to cut them, for example, scores +50%. Peru rated +48%, while Argentina weighed in at +38%.

Experts say that the rub is in whether or not this growth is sustainable. Number one on the list is Singapore, while the U.S. barely made the ranking, coming in at number 10.

He’s got his sights set on a political future in another country: Japan, where a political party has asked him to run for Senator.

“In light of this proposal, Alberto Fujimori has left his definite response pending, as he analyzes the benefits of his possible election as Senator in Japan could have for the Preuvian people,” said the ex-president’s press office in a statement.

Peru: Fujimori will get a fair trial

3:46 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Controversia|Justice|Peru · Comments Off

13 Jun 2007

_40952359_fujimori_ap203b.jpgLast week we told you that Alberto Fujimori, the controversial ex-president of Peru, might be extradited from Chile back to his country. Much is being said about how fair a trial Fujimori could get in a country where he is hated by so many, but the Peruvian government is attempting to put those fears to rest.

Peru’s prime minister, Jorge del Castillo, reiterated today that ex-president Alberto Fujimori will have a “fair” trial “without interferences” from the governement if he is extradited to the country and reminded [reporters] that “the ball is in the Chilean justice system’s court right now.”

Del Castillo is referring to the fact that Chile has still not decided whether they will send Fujimori back to his home country. The extradition was first requested by Peru in January of 2006, and current President Alan Garcia‘s administration has been accused of not doing enough to get Fujimori processed.

Fujimori to be placed under house arrest

2:58 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Chile|Justice|Peru|Politics · Comments Off

8 Jun 2007

fujimori-small3.jpgEx-president of Peru, Alberto Fujimori, will be placed under house arrest in Chile, at the order of a Chilean judge. The Peruvian government had expressed fears that the ex-leader might flee the country:

Those fears were fueled on Thursday when a Chilean state prosecutor submitted a report to the Supreme Court recommending his extradition.

The report will be passed to Judge Orlando Alvarez, who must decide whether Fujimori should be sent to Peru, which accuses him of embezzling $15 million and using excessive anti-terrorism measures during his 1990-2000 presidency.

According to Reuters, Fujimori says he has no intention of fleeing the country, and is “calmly” waiting the decision on his fate. Expect major uproar if he does get sent back to Peru.

Peru wants to erradicate lateness

1:39 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Culture|Peru · Comments Off

19 Feb 2007

image055.jpgThe Peruvian government is launching a campaign to do away with lateness, which, according to many Peruvians, is the social ill that holds this South American country back. 91% of Lima residents support the initiative, called Perú: La hora sin demora, which will launch on March 1st by having the entire country synchronize its clocks with the official time of the Peruvian Marines.

The idea of encouraging punctuality — which the government is calling “a civic virtue that represents respect for the other person’s time and there for respect for the other person” — was proposed by a group within Peru’s Consejo de Ministros and made up of luminaries and intellectuals called “El Grupo del Deber” which, according to their website, looks to promote “the return of civic values” in Peruvian society.

url.jpgIt seems that Spanish airline Iberia has some ‘splaining to do…as to why two Peruvian parlamentarians were the target of what can only be regarded as racist and xenophobic comments on the part of Iberia staff at Lima’s airport.

Peruvian congresswomen Hilaria Supa and Maria Sumire, both members of the oppositional UPP-PNP alliance, complained they have been the target of discrimination by Spanish airline Iberia. The incident obviously happened on Saturday evening at Lima’s Jorge Chavez International Airport.

According to Sumire’s version given to CPN Radio, both legislators arrived at Iberia’s check-in counter to board the 8:55 p.m. flight to Madrid.

However, they were told the airplane was full and there was no alternative for a later flight that night.

Sumire maintained that despite purchasing the tickets in advance, airline personnel made them wait unnecessarily while servicing other customers first. After the congresswomen started to complain about this disadvantage, an airline employee apparently answered something that roughly translates to “how can you be congresswomen if you don’t even know how to speak the language? Obviously you don’t speak Spanish very well, so complain all you want”.

Um, she said what?! Yet another reason not to fly Iberia. While Spain seems to be the most progressive country in Europe, it appears that some of the people hired by its national airline are not. Which begs the question: was the employee a Spaniard or a racist Peruvian?

Montesinos sentenced to 20 years

12:36 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Controversia|Peru|Politics · Comments Off

22 Sep 2006

montesinos-peru_not.jpgEx Fujimori aide and Laura Bozzo’s ex-boyfriend, Vladimiro Montesinos, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for allegedly selling arms to Colombia’s FARC (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia), according to Spain’s 20 Minutos:

This sentence, which follows 12 other sentences since Montesinos was detained in Venezuela in June of 2001, is the longest and is the one that he must serve out, since in Peru sentences are not culmulative.

Apparently, Montesinos procured the arms from Jordan, and sold them to the FARC, “committing crimes of violation of a foreign state’s sovereignty, political conspiracy, and illegal supplying of arms to subversive groups.”

Meanwhile, Montesinos’s ex main squeeze will gets 4 years of her own on a variety of charges.
