Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar shocked a few reporters in New York when he decided to comment on the relationship Penelope Cruz (known as Pe and one of Pedro’s muses) had with Tom Cruise:
Almodóvar said in a meeting with reporters that the actress’ career was damaged by the long relationship she maintained with the polemic Tom Cruise, current partner of Katie Holmes. The director also said that the roles that Cruz gets in the U.S. aren’t on par with her talent as an actress, and that in general she is offered scripts that cast her as “the pretty girl” instead of letting her develop all of her potential.
Penelope was Cruise’s faithful compaion for years, right after he divorced from actress Nicole Kidman. For Almodóvar, that relationship made the press “see Penelope in a bad light”. He thinks that many people, not only in the U.S., saw her as an opportunist, when that wasn’t the case and that Nicole Kidman could take advantage of her relationship to get good roles, but Penelope could not since “they saw her as the other woman”.
If Katie Holmes is reading this, I bet she’s saying “amen”. Tom Cruise is more a career liability than a help these days.
Meanwhile, Pe seems to be over all of that, happily dating Orlando Bloom and getting hit on by “drag kings”.

Spanish actress Penelope Cruz is flying high with the success of her new film, Almodovar‘s Volver, and hasn’t wasted any time in replacing ex Matthew McConaughey after their split. She was rumored to be dating Adrian Brody, and now it seems she’s traded up for actor Orlando Bloom. Spain’s El Semanal Digital calls Penelope the country’s most eligible bachelorette:
After being romantically linked to actores such as Matt Damon, Nicolas Cage, Tom Cruise, Matthew McConaghey and Adrien Brody, our most international heartbreaker now has a new victim and, this time it’s an actor at the very height of his career. It seems that Orlando Bloom himself has fallen into the web of the sexy Spaniard, according to some revealing photos published in Cuore magazine.
Apparently, Penelope was introduced to Orlando by her good friend Salma Hayek.

Spanish actress Penelope Cruz says she doesn’t feel pressure to fit into U.S. standards of beauty, mainly around weight because she’s not from the U.S. FemaleFirst goes so far as to say:
The beautiful ‘Volver’ star is comfortable with her curvy body, despite the expectation from Hollywood for women to be really skinny.
I agree that Penelope is beautiful but curvy? She looks straight up flaca to me. Or is it that as a Latina I also have a different idea of beauty compared to Hollywood?

Last month we told youthat Spanish actress Penelope Cruz and Texan actor Matthew McConaughey had split. At that time, the couple cited pressures caused by having a long-distance relationship as the key factor influencing their break-up. Now, Matthew is saying that the pressure was of an entirely different kind: it was Penelope pressuring him to get married. According to LaBotana.com:
According to online magazine Famapop, the reason for the breakup between Spanish actress Penélope Cruz and actor Matthew McConaughey, was the pressure that “Pé” put on him to talk about wedding plans.Matt said in a recent interview that he wasn’t ready to take that big step, meanwhile Cruz told the press in her country that her greatest desire was to get married and have a family.
It’s nice to know that Hollywood men are just like ordinary men. They hear the word “marriage” and run for the hills.

Spanish beauty Penelope Cruz has split from her boyfriend Texas sex symbol Matthew McConaughey, reports People Magazine:
Matthew McConaughey and Penelope Cruz have decided to spend time apart, PEOPLE has learned exclusively. The couple “have decided to take time off as a couple. Due to busy work schedules and so much time apart, they mutually decided four weeks ago that separating was the best thing to do at this time,” according to a joint statement from the couple to PEOPLE.
“They’re very good friends, but they haven’t been able to be together,” a source close to Cruz tells PEOPLE. “Who knows what the future holds.”
The biggest factor influencing the break appears to be the fact that the couple saw each other very infrequently:
(Penelope) said it has been too hard to have a relationship when you see the other person every six weeks,” adds the source. The couple last saw each other in February when McConaughey visited Cruz on location in Spain.
What’s that saying? “Amor de lejos es amor de pendejos”. These guys seem to have figured that out.

Spanish director Pedro Almódovar has often been applauded for raising the profile of women in Spanish film. Indeed, most of his films’ protagonists are strong women who know how to survive. His latest cast of actresses has been awarded a very special award at Cannes for their performance in his latest film, Volver.
The honour, given out in a glittering ceremony in this French Riviera resort, reflected the flawless performances and on-screen intimacy of Cruz and actresses Carmen Maura, Lola Duenas, Blanca Portillo, Yohana Cobo and Chus Lampreave in the Spanish film.“It’s such an honour to share this award with these amazing women who have been so inspiring,” said Cruz as she accepted the award with some of the other actresses next to her.
Many of these actresses have worked with Almódovar on past projects. This is the first time in the history of the festival that Cannes has awarded a collective best actress award.
