After so much politics and flying back and forth its time for fluffy goodness (mmmm rico). Perez Hilton is reporting that Penelope Cruz had what seems to be a panic attack on a plane.
Penelope Cruz had a panic attack onboard a Continental flight from Newark to Barcelona Thursday night. Cruz, who appeared to be traveling alone, was in first class and became agitated after the plane left the gate. After she spoke with the cockpit, the plane returned to the gate and Cruz deplaned. A fellow passenger told Huffington Post, “She was freaking out and refused to fly.” In the process of Cruz deplaning, the flight removed all the bags, which then sat in the rain, so that the airline could locate her luggage
Pobre Penelope. Perez is hinting that she was on something, maybe she’s afraid of flying.

Ooh, baby baby…Looks like Pe has got a new man: Scarlett Johannson’s old man. Oh, well, I guess she doesn’t care about “sloppy seconds”:
Penélope Cruz and Josh Hartnett shared a romantic dinner on March 21st in which their was hand-holding and even movie star kisses.…the protagonist of “Volver” was surprised last week in the company of the actor in the El Coyote restaurant in L.A., attempting to get a table where they could have dinner protected from the curiosity of the rest of the customers.
When there wasn’t one available, they went to the luxury restaurant The Little Door, where they reserved the blue room. In such a romantic atmosphere, according to In Touch, Pe and Josh had an exquisite evening where hugs, kisses and gestures of tenderless were not lacking.
Penelope goes through men like I go through kleenex. In all honesty though, I wouldn’t say that this is the best she’s chosen so far. I mean, this guy was in 40 Days and 40 Nights.

I have to agree with what most critics are saying about Ellen DeGeneres hosting last night’s 79th Academy Awards. She was boring and I could have done without her dancing but my ears perked up when she appeared to call Penelope Cruz “Mexican”, an error she even apologized for on air later during the broadcast.
In Ellen’s defense, I honestly think that she just lost her train of thought. While she was thinking about properly acknowledging the diversity that was represented by the nominees, it appears that she wanted to say something about the Volver star and then began another thought without finishing her first one.

Director Woody Allen is responsible for launching the careers of many an admired actress, and for using some of the most alluring women of the moment as protagonists for his films. Now he’s drawing from Almodovar’s crop of discoveries and has announced that his next film will star Penelope Cruz.
Allen, in his frequent trips to Barcelona playing with his New Orleans Jazz Band had hinted that he wanted to make his next film in that city. Now it’s official: the film will be in English and Spanish, set in Barcelona, and starring Penelope.

Hollywood has been buzzing about an Oscar nod for Pedro Almodóvar’s Volver since Cannes. Most of thought it was a given, but we were wrong. Almodóvar (who missed the Golden Globes this year) has been passed over and his film has garnered only one nomination, that of Penelope Cruz:
With the nomination of Penelope Cruz to the Best Actress category, the protagonist of Volver becomes the first Spanish actress to be nominated for this award. The precedent was set by Javier Bardem, who, in 2001, was nominated in the Best Actor category.
In happier news, Mexico can celebrate the multiple nominations of its paisanos. Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Babel and Guillermo Del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth have been nominated for numerous awards, and once again Argentino Gustavo Santolalla is in the running for his amazing score.

Latinos were in the house at this year’s Golden Globes. With the sweep of two important categories by ABC’s Ugly Betty, we had something to celebrate, but the tail end of the show brought triumphs and losses.
The big win: the last award of the night, Best Film Drama, went to Mexico’s Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for Babel:
“I swear I have my papers in order, governor, I swear,” “Babel” director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu of Mexico joked after California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger presented the best drama prize for the sweeping ensemble drama that takes place on three continents.
And while here at VL we frequently entertain the debate of whether we should consider people, things, issues, animals, etc. from Spain applicable to this site (yes, we know Spaniards are not Latinos), Mala and I are huge Almodóvar fans so we were rooting for Volver. Unfortunately, our movie lost. Boo-hoo. I wonder if Pedro knew and that’s why he said he had cold and skipped the awards all together?
Also, our beloved Penelope lost the Best Actress award, also for Volver. Hopefully Salma stuck around to keep her company without rubbing her nose in it.
Still, some Hollywood experts still have Pe pegged for a Best Actress nod at the Oscars.

While the fantasy of hotties Salma Hayek and Penelope Cruz being lovers might inhabit the mind of every man in the Western Hemisphere, Penelope herself says that it’s all just a publicity stunt. Apparently she has fomented the rumors herself by acting extra cozy with her Mexican friend:
Penelope Cruz claims she knows why those lesbian rumors refuse to die. The “Vanilla Sky” actress, who has long been the subject of speculation about her sexuality, says she helped keep them going.Cruz has been friends with Salma Hayek since she came to the U.S. from Spain about seven years ago. There friendship started a buzz, which grew a lot louder when she groped her friend’s behind at a press conference while the two were promoting their film “Banditas.”
“I grabbed Salma’s ass just to keep things moving, because everyone was a little slow,” Cruz said while promoting her new film “Volver” reports Australia’s Courier Mail. “And, of course, the energy changed when I did that.”
I guess Salma are the Latina Oprah and Gail, the girls with the friendship no one understands.

The latest child to spring from the mind of Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar, Volver (trailer after the jump), is not to be missed. The story, spun with bold intricate twists as only Almodóvar knows how, tells the story of three generations of women of La Mancha, Spain. The spectacular cast is led by la bella y talentosa Penelope Cruz in the role of Raimunda. Raimunda, like her mother played by Carmen Maura, like her sister played by Lola Dueñas, and like her daughter played by Yohana Cobo, have all been wronged by men and all hold secrets about just how deep those wrongs are. These wrongs committed by the nearly absent men are shrouded in further mystery by a culture of death.
But the culture of death presented here by Almodóvar and interpreted by the actors isn’t a dark one. Death and returning from the dead are as natural as life. In fact Almodóvar says that film is a tribute to the social rites practices by his people with regard to death and the dead and that making the film helped him look at death without fear, although he admits to not understand or accept it.

Well, I wasn’t fully able to fulfill my promise to report on Salma Hayek’s appearance on Ugly Betty last night. A little thing called the Latin Grammys got in the way. I was, however, able to see what must have been the “big” scene of the episode: Salma with no underwear on standing on Eric Mabius’ shoulders. But that’s all I can tell you, other than she looked beautiful (big surprise).
Salma has been up to other stuff, though. She appeared at a Hollywood screening of her homey Penelope Cruz’s new film, Almodovar’s Volver, where she gushed over the Spanish actress during a tribute program for Pe:
Salma Hayek, after giving her friend a huge hug, began to cry as she described her as “a fairy that is not of this world because these qualities are only seen on the screen, and it’s there where she feels more comfortable.”
Salma, joined in the audience by celebrities (including Prince) and Penelope’s family, couldn’t stop gushing:
Everyone was quiet except the Mexican actress, who opened her mouth to announce to the public that “today you will see the best of Cruz.” And “because Penelope is genius when she speaks but when Pedro writes what she says, she sounds more than ever like herself,” said Hayek, with pride.
