happy_party_time.gifWell, somehow I made it up and out to the polls before eight AM today. I actually finished voting before the Obama campaign knocked on my door asking me if I needed a ride to the polls.

I am currently crossing my fingers with much exhaustion–Oh, MAN do we need things to be different, no? Cross your fingers in exhaustion with me, VLatin@s.

And if you haven’t voted, take a gander at this interview with VP candidate Rosa Clemente. I encourage you to consider her words as you go into the voting booth, but I am in no way attempting to sway your vote! :-)

Cuz I know you’re going to vote, right?
And then when you’re done you’re coming back here to help us bring in the new administration?

I know you don’t have any other plans at all. I have that kind of faith in you!

Your favorite blogeditorias (is that a word??) have got together to figure out how we will be spending our Election day tomorrow–and wow, oh, wow, do we have some exciting choices set up for ya’ll!

mexican%20dancers.jpg

My favorite choice, of course, is the one I (La Macha Glorious) will be setting up–Vivir Latino’s Live Blogging Election Coverage!

I will be setting up a live blog post and will be moderating–all YOU have to do is show up and share your opinion! I will be focusing on the election results as they come in through different U.S. stations, but will be more than willing to stray from that should the need arise!

Jennifer will also be around covering election coverage from outside the U.S., and La Mala will checking in her with normal on the spot coverage.

It promises to be an exciting day, possibly even a historic one. Be sure to come share in the fun with us!

The Sexualization of Obama

7:08 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · US Presidential Race 2008 · Comments Off

29 Oct 2008

After all the anger this year about how the presidential races were sexist against Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin (which I *know* they were, I’m not contesting that at all), followed up by examples of Hillary Nutcrackers and Palin sex dolls and earnest assertions that the sexualization of a candidate would never happen if that candidate was a man–I was really interested to read the following article in which the sexualization of Obama (and McCain as a consequence) is examined:

Comedian Bill Maher appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno to plug his movie, Religulous. Although the segment was taped before the debates, Maher summed up what a lot of people were thinking. He called Obama the “Jackie Robinson of American politics” and said that much of the Republican pundits were couching their discussions in veiled racism, playing off his funny-sounding name or going so far as claiming Obama has a “big, black uncircumcised penis and it smells like curry.”

I hadn’t been aware of many of the examples listed–but now that I am, it makes me wonder if the proper assertion isn’t “It never would happen if it were a man” but rather instead, “It would never happen to a *white* man”?

Repercussions of Rape become Part of Presidential Race

4:54 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Women · Comments Off

It’s pretty stunning to me to see how women’s issues are making their way into this presidential election. And not just “women’s issues” like the Parental Leave Act (which gave both mothers and fathers and all caregivers the right to six weeks off after the birth/adoption of a baby) which obviously was extremely important to a mother, but was meant to appeal to *parents* and *caregivers*. But solid women’s issues, like do I (or any woman/girl) have the right to abort a pregnancy after I’ve been raped?

The biggest problem I see with this ad is that I really think it only “works” because the person talking is blond and white. Consider what mainstream reaction might be to a dark skinned Latina with an accent talking about the same situation. Would hate groups organize to get her fired? Would the government inject her with drugs? Or maybe pay her to be sterilized so if she is raped again she won’t have the little problem of pregnancy?

But in spite of the problems, I do think it’s really important that this stuff is finally being brought out into the mainstream view. What do you think? Is there a place for ads like these during the election season? Do you find them compelling? Would they change your vote one way or another?

This video of Matt Damon discussing Sarah Palin as a V.P. candidate is making the internet rounds right now. The already classic line from the clip, “I need to know if she thinks dinosaurs were here 4,000 years ago because she’s going to have the nuclear code.”

I do believe that my respect for Mr. Damon just increased ten-fold. Although I feel a slight sneaky suspicion that there is just a tad of hidden sexism in his words–is there something wrong with hockey mom’s? I get his point that being a hockey mom doesn’t qualify you to be president, but why does being a lawyer qualify you more than being a hockey mom? What really *does* qualify you to be a president? I’ve heard some politicians say that really, nothing can–but we as a country do seem to feel more comfortable with unqualified men taking over high power positions with little to no experience that we do women. I think it’s fair to question why that is. What do you think?

ice.jpgLast night’s theme of the RNC was “Country First” and it is clear current policy is not people first especially when it comes to the immigrant community. So while there are more speeches tonight and VP pick Palin will talk about her role as a woman and as a mother, there will be no talk of immigrant mothers and their issues. As Palin’s teen daughter moves forward with her now very public pregnancy, there will be no talk of immigrant women giving birth in chains.

Offices of Immigration and Customs Enforcement

425 “Eye” St. NW Washington D.C.

Sponsored by the D.C. Alliance for Immigrant Justice and the Metro D.C. Interfaith Sanctuary Network

On August 25, agents of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) descended on Howard Industries in the small town of Laurel, Mississippi. Agents arrested 595 workers in the largest immigration raid in U.S. history. Workers have been separated from their families and the local immigrant community has been terrorized. The superintendent of the county school district reported that half of the 160 Latino students were absent from school the next day.

“Basically, they create a major humanitarian crisis for families and spouses and children,” Bill Chandler of the Jackson-based Mississippi Immigrant Rights Alliance (MIRA) told the Hattiesburg American. In some cases, he said, both parents were now gone in the raid, leaving their families totally alone.

The ACLU is investigating cases of civil rights abuses that took place during the raid. “We are deeply concerned by reports that workers at the factory where the raid occurred were segregated by race or ethnicity and interrogated, the factory was locked down for several hours, workers were denied access to counsel, and ICE failed to inform family members and lawyers following the raid where the workers were being jailed,” Mónica Ramírez, a staff attorney with the ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project who is meeting with family members, said in a statement.

At this rally and press conference, activists from the Washington area immigrant rights movement will gather to speak out against this raid and demand an end to raids and deportations. The Mississippi raid comes shortly after a devastating raid at Dulles Airport and a smaller action in suburban Maryland just this week.
