Will Cuba’s New Oil Find Make It More of a U.S. Enemy?

s-CUBA-OIL-large.jpgOil is gold these days, as a hot topic on the presidential campaign trail, and as a commodity that fuels more than homes, but also wars and diplomatic relations. Take the U.S. relationship with Venezuela for example. One of the biggest threats that President Chavez has made is that he will cut off U.S. access to Venezuela’s oil. Now there is a new potential threat. Well not new, pero a new spin on an old threat. Cuba announced that there may be more than 20bn barrels of recoverable oil in offshore fields in Cuba’s share of the Gulf of Mexico, more than twice the previous estimate.

What does this mean if it is indeed true?

Venezuela Wins Suit Against Exxon

r.jpegScore for Venezuela in it’s ongoing battle with U.S. oil giant Exxon. Earlier today a British court ruled that a $12 billion freeze on Venezuelan assets awarded to U.S. oil major Exxon Mobil should be lifted. The freeze has been won in January by Exxon, who wanted to secure available cash if it won arbitration over an oil field which was lost in President Hugo Chavez’s nationalization drive. Exxon is expected to appeal.

Venezuela’s Ambassador to Britain, who arrived shortly after the ruling, answered with just one word when he heard the result: “Excellento”.Excellento? Um Reuters, check your translations.

mercenaries.jpgVenezuelan vice president Jose Rangel is expressing his ire over a video game which he says proves that the United States is looking to invade his country and take possession of its oil supply:

The game, “Mercenaries 2: World in Flames” only comes out next year but Venezuela’s Vice President Jose Vicente Rangel has already expressed anger — at the US government.

“This shows the perversion of North American society, its government,” said Rangel on Wednesday, calling
President George W. Bush’s administration “a government of gangsters, drug traffickers and criminals”.

According to Agence France-Presse, the game depicts characters who look like Hollywood action figures invading areas that look very similar to Caracas and taking possession of oil facilities that bear a striking resemblance to those of Venezuela.

Hugo Chavez Plays Santa in el Bronx, NYC

chavez.jpg The wintry cold is already here in NYC and many of my fellow city dwellers are dreading their heating bills and/or rent increases that may come as the price of heating oil rises. Controversial Venezuelan Presidente Hugo Chavez wants to soften the blow a bit for the poor and non-profits that serve them in the South Bronx. Eight-million gallons of heating oil is being sold super cheap via CITGO, the Houston-based subsidiary of Venezuela’s national oil company. A similar program was also announced for Massachusetts.
